Summary: Humor (?) at it's worst
Review: If the funniest moments you can recall were spent telling jokes on a grade school playground-you just might enjoy this show--however if you prefer real British Humor--such as Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, Father Ted etc--stay far away from this poorly written and poorly acted attempt at comedy. At best--this is a less subtle "Hogans Heros"--and that's being as polite as I can be. Personally, I had never seen this show--and purchased it because of the glowing customer reviews--with high expectations--and totally unsatisfactory results. Purchase this dvd if you choose--but you've been warned! (You're money could be far better spent on the other shows I mentioned-as well as Vicar of Dibley, Monarch of the Glen, Keeping Up Appearances, BallykissAngel, Yes Minister--or many other much more worthy comedies that are actually funny)

Review: If you like or LOVE British humor/comedy, you won't want to miss this series. I bought mine from Amazon.UK and we have truly enjoyed it...it's one of the best. I just hope more episodes are released in the future. I have a PAL/NTSC converter DVD player, but with the release of this series for Region One players, everone in the US and Canada will have the opportunity to enjoy ALLO! ALLO!.The setting: A small French Cafe in German occupied France during WWII. Lots of little sub-plots and excellent writing, casting and acting.

Summary: If you love British humor, 'Allo 'Allo grows on you and
Review: keeps you wanting more. Our friends in NJ told us about the show and the premise sounds strange, but the series gains momentum, as you start to understand all of the characters. The Gestapo roles are some of the funniest and despite one reviewer's opinion, this show is nothing like Hogan's Heroes. Rene's timing becomes a thing of beauty, Hans steals most scenes, Herr Flick is outstanding, Monsieur LeClerc has a few choice moments, and once you get to know Crabtree, the bumbling Brit whose French is atrocious, you own vocabulary will change!! My whole family loves this and we re-watch episodes when our spirits need picking up. Mr. Bean and 'Allo 'Allo, the 2 best Brit comedies of the last 20 years.

Review: Living in the UK im lucky enough to buy the 'Allo Allo' DVD Series 1 and 2 which I dont think its being released over in the US, bascially this is another extremely funny and slightly insane sitcom from my home: england :), I think i even prefer this to other classics like Dads Army and Are you being served? Maybe the standards arnt as high as Red Dwarf but Allo Allo is still classic never-dying comedy!

Summary: The British Are Coming
Review: Mention "Are You Being Served?" to someone, and their eyes will light up. Mention "Allo Allo!", and you'll probably be hit with a quizzical look. This has been my overall experience, and it has always been a frustrating one. I link the two series, because both are brainchilds of Britcom comedic masters Jeremy Lloyd & David Croft. Both are absolutely hilarious. But it seems as though "Allo Allo!" has taken the shorter end of the popularity stick here in the US, but with this release of its first season on DVD, I hope that can change somewhat. The first 7 episodes of the classic Britcom are featured on this collection, and they are the start to a most wonderful, long-running show. The story starts during WWII, when France is being occupied by Germany. Our protagonist is Rene Artois, who runs a cafe. He is the (mostly) sane center to a storm of off the wall characters. Rene's wife, Edith, is older than he is, and is a terrible singer. The local Gestapo agent, Herr Flick, is a psycho with a limp. The German officers are all nutty, and one of them even fancies Rene. The women of the French Resistance are always sneaking into the cafe to cajole Rene into daring missions for France, and then there are also the British airmen -- shot down over France, and now in hiding at Rene's cafe. They don't speak the language, and their appearances in each episode are always good for a laugh. Rene is also quite keen on his bar maids, Yvette and Maria. It is a secret he must keep from the ever-suspicious Edith. All of this, I'm sure, sounds like a lot of information to take in. And it is. "Allo Allo!" rarely slows down the pace, and this eventually leads to Rene opening every episode talking to the audience, bringing them up to speed on the previous episode's events. The storylines flow from one show to the next, and over the years we are treated to a host of madcap adventures. I think it takes until Series 3 before "Allo Allo!" really finds its groove, but Series 1 is still a solid start to a truly great television show. Once the disc is over, I'm sure you'll want to see more. And it only gets better. There are many more episodes of "Allo Allo!" to come. I hope that we get to see the rest of them released on DVD someday. The show deserves it.

Review: My buddies and I used to watch this a lot while we were stationed at a tiny base in Belgium during the late 80s and early 90s. It's pretty decent, for a European production. We enjoyed this just as much as Mrs. Bucket in "Keeping Up Appearances."

Summary: A Voice Crying in the Wilderness
Review: My voice, that is. I've been telling everyone I know for years that this is the funniest BritCom there ever was. I convinced my sister, who has the DVD and rated it for me. I'm going to buy this DVD and any subsequent ones, even tho I don't have a DVD player -- I can at least play them on my computer. This series is logical insanity at its best. Throughout the most preposterous situations and plot twists, this superb cast never veers from playing it completely straight, as if they truly believe everything that is happening. Watch for Gruber soulfully singing "Mad About the Boy" to Rene, and that poker-faced idiot Crabtree singing in fractured French at the German officers' party. By the way -- since this series was a takeoff on "Secret Army", how's chances of getting DVDs issued of "Secret Army", surely one of the most hair-raising WWII series, and also superbly written, cast and acted?

Summary: A Funny WWII???
Review: One might not think it's possible to see WWII in this light...however...in England anything is possible!
One of the best Britcoms lies in this story-line. I highly recommend it. The series starts off rather slow and these episodes are not of the funniest of the series BUT it is a must see as a preliminary to the rest of remaining episodes. One can only imagine what all these women find attractive in the man called Rene', yet they all seemingly fall under his spell. As the show goes on, each character grows more intense, more alluring, and more hillarious. YOU WILL BECOME ADDICTED TO THIS SHOW! Buy it. It's worth it.
