Rating: Summary: Beautiful music, story, acting, and actors!!!! Review: This movie is one of the best adaptations of Jane Austen's novels, staying true to the story, without putting in the garbage that most screenwriters think necessary for a movie to survive on "in the real world". I only wish that A&E would try a version of Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey next! I have their Emma, which is also excellent, unlike the BBC productions of all her novels. BBC seems to delight in poor filming quality, music, and ugly actors. O.K. not everyone's beautiful, but all the more reason to make the people in movies that!!!
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book -- not a favorite video Review: Viewers who say that this version of Pride & Prejudice is most true to the novel have not read it very carefully. I've read it at least a dozen times and I can testify that some of the most beautiful prose (and some of the most poignant lines) are badly reconstructed in this rendition. The BBC version was much truer, in that sense, to the novel. Nevertheless, I do agree that some of the 'spirit' of the novel is well preserved. I much prefer Elizabeth Garvie in the role of Elizabeth. But I'd love to 'play it again' with Elizabeth Garvie beside Colin Firth!
Rating: Summary: One of the best things I've ever seen on T.V. Review: Magnificent adoption of the Novel. Very faitfull portrayal
Rating: Summary: Stunning adaptation of great novel Review: This DVD is a fitting tribute to a great work of literature. The performances, particularly by Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, are spectacular. Never on screen has Darcy been so fully fleshed out. This is the best adaptation I have ever seen of any Austen novel, and, in my opinion, Pride and Prejudice was her best. I adored the original A&E presentation and am delighted to now own a copy on DVD. The quality is excellent.
Rating: Summary: "In vain I have struggled. My feelings will not be repressed" Review: I can honestly say that the 1995 BBC film adaption of Jane Austen's best-loved classic "Pride and Prejudice" is the greatest film of all time!!! This may be due to the glorious costumes, faithful narrative, picturesque scenery, or the way in which the super-talented cast - particulary Colin Firth (Darcy) and Jennifer Ehle (Lizzie)- play their respective roles with such enthusiastic energy and spirit, although I believe it is the conflict of character which never ceases to delight me. There is the proud and conceited Mr Darcy, the easy, unaffected Mr Bingley, the sweet-tempered Jane, the spiteful, vain Miss Bingley, the nervous, excitable Mrs Bennet, and rather silly Mr Collins, not to mention Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who enjoys conducting herself like a "despotic monarch" (played excellently by Barbara Leigh-Hunt.) These are among my favourite characters, but the chief of these is, naturally, Elizabeth - whos disposition is of the kind I, and many others, can relate to because, although she is headstrong and revels in the ridiculous, she is sensible and is acutely aware of her unfortunate situation. It was all this that first awakened me to the infinite charms of "Pride and Prejudice" and it is because of the timeless nature of it's subject - the often rocky course of romance - that will ensure it remains a favourite for generations to come. Read the Book! - See the Film!

Rating: Summary: A wonderful adaptation of the original book Review: Wow! I had previously seen the BBC production of this famous tale, and loved it, though I thought the Darcy they used much too austere. This version was SO well acted. I agree with another reviewer that when Darcy stares at her across the room, you sense his heart. I have watched and re-watched this video, and each time find new things in it. I thought this Lydia much more saucy and believable than the one in the BBC version..much more likely to run off with Wickham. I also felt that the portrayal of the Protagonists in the story (Elizabeth and Darcy) more light hearted. Jane Austen was known for her quick wit and humor (which is why she found favor with the Prince Regent). I felt this adaptation more in the spirit of what Jane Austen herself would write.
Rating: Summary: IMO the DVD is at least on par w/ the LD release Review: I'd seen the original cable airing of this mini-series and absolutely adored it. It is, by far, my favorite Austen adaptation. I then purchased the laser disc box set. The DVD simply provides the best presentation at a fraction of the cost. While the video quality is certainly not stellar, in my opinion it is not inferior to the laser. (I would have liked to see an improvement, naturally. As I also wish that Image would have waited to make it a dual-sided, dual-layer release, thereby allowing the entire mini-series to fit on 1 disc. Still, I am not displeased.) I would recommend that any fan of the mini-series add this DVD to their library; it is a treasure. (Here I insert a plea for more A&E/BBC productions on DVD.) Lisel
Rating: Summary: Amazingly close to the book with its beauty preserved. Review: This is a rare movie based on a book where the greatness of the book was guarded and preserved. The acting and production are superb in their skill and faithfulness to the period.
Rating: Summary: The video quality of this DVD looks like a bad VHS copy. Review: I agree with the others on screen adaptation quality. But the video quality is not up to par of other DVD presentations. After the dreamy opening credit, the video quality looks awfully hazy and just like a bad VHS copy. I didn't see the original A&E presentation on cable and have no way of comparing to it, but the video quality for this DVD set is TOTALLY unacceptable.
