Summary: Disappointing DVD of a great performance
Review: First of all, let me say that the 3 stars are not for the performance. I also have the VHS set, which I would give 5 stars.
The DVD version looks washed out. If this is really "remastered," they ought to unremaster it. What is surprising is that the colors in the scenes shown in the "featurette" appear to be as rich as in the VHS version, but this is not the case in the body of the DVD.
I bought the DVD to get to my favorite scenes more easily, but it appears that I will have to keep my VHS edition if I want to see them in good color.

Summary: superb but not perfect
Review: This has to be one of the best period drama. It is a relatively faithful adaptation of Austen's novel. The cast was excellent, the leading actor and actress were near perfect. I appreciated tremendously the preservation of the original dialogues and the beautiful music. And look at the costumes and the dances! But other reviewers have said enough about the merits, now I will pick nits.

1) The ending was a little too explicit, and contradictory to the subtlety of the entire series (and the book). Who needs to see the actual wedding? I laughed out loud here...

2) Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner's intelligence and dignity was not shown at all in the series. Darcy respected them not only because he wanted to show Lizzy that her reproofs (false pride, for one) had been attended to, but also because the Gardiners were indeed very respectable people!

3) I'd like it better if the adaptation kept more of the dialogues between Lizzy and Darcy at the end of the movie, if they had time to ellaborate how their feelings towards each other changed, the impact of Darcy's letter, etc. The book had very nice dialogues here.

4) The wet shirt scene, although extremely cute, is perhaps unnecessary. Lots of viewers who respect this movie are not those who look for "sexy" scenes. This scene, therefore, is a little bit, only a little bit, cheap.

But I still give the movie 5 stars because its overall achievement is great.

Summary: Great film; poor DVD quality
Review: I love Jane Austen adaptations, and this is one of my absolute favorite ones, so you can imagine my extreme disappointment when the DVD was of such poor quality. The colors was poor, the contrast off. Blacks were so dark that there were no highlights and the lights were washed out and faded. I've seen this movie dozens of times and the rotten quality was so distracting. Even adjusting my television set did not help make this poor production watchable.

Boo-hiss to A&E for not producing a better DVD (and from what I've seen from other online reviews of this and other A&E productions, I am not alone in my feelings). Be very careful when buying any A&E DVD. Stick to the VHS or tape it off of the television.

Summary: Poor quality DVD, high quality miniseries (go VHS instead!)
Review: I was studying abroad in England when this miniseries first aired on the BBC on Sunday nights. I completely fell in love with it. It was broadcast in England in widescreen so even after buying the full-screen VHS version I wanted to get the Special Edition DVD so I could relive my original experience. Alas, the DVD quality is very poor. As others have written, the colors look washed out and faded. With DVDs you pay for better quality picture and sound, not worse!

If you are buying your very first copy of this miniseries, go with the VHS version until the DVD has been improved.

Summary: DVD version
Review: I have to agree with the other reviews that the DVD version is a disappointment. At first I thought something might be wrong with my tv. The picture is absolutely drained of color and contrast. The "special features" are also practically nonexistent. I expected more from this version, especially when the movie itself is so popular and well made.

Summary: When stressed out, I visit Elizabeth & Darcy's world...
Review: I own this film series, and watch it over and over and over again. I never tire of the relationships, the landscapes, the personalities. It's a lovely, lovely film, and an exquisite place to go when real-life stresses are getting me down. The intelligent, valued, athletic, independent Elizabeth, and the equally bright but much more mysterious and troubled Darcy are a pair to watch. How their relationship builds over the course of the story is never boring - the ups and downs, combined with the accomanying subplot storylines, keep my interest time and time again. And the elements that backdrop the story - the costumes and scenery - are beautiful in and of themselves. Obviously, I give this film the highest rating available. Watch it when you, too, need to escape for awhile...

Summary: Awesome!!
Review: Wow!! Pride and Prejudice is such a good movie! It is soo worth any amount of money. They did a really good job taking the writings of Jane Austen and making it into a wonderful production! It is worth spending 6 hours watching it... I sometimes wish it was longer! Colin Firth is such a cutie and Jennifer Ehle does really well playing Elizabeth Bennet!

Summary: top-shelf!
Review: this movie blew me away. the screenplay and the book are almost identical so you know you are getting the real thing. the acting was also superb. the reason i didn't give it five stars is because the color quality of the dvd is not as good as it was on tv when it was aired. it is much "grayer". also, they don't have optional subtitles in the special features. i hope they come out with a better one. i would willingly buy another copy if it was improved.

Summary: One of the best adaptations of Jane Austen's novels
Review: Colin Firth is the perfect Mr. Darcy; Elizabeth Ehle is so very expressive and the ideal heroine. I thoroughly enjoyed the film -- the film is well-paced, well-acted, well-casted. Despite the length of the two volumes combined (over five hours), I was never bored like I was when I had to watch ponderous adaptations of classic novels and Shakespeare plays in school. I kept wanting more. Overall: Excellent!

Summary: Excellent!
Review: I greatly enjoyed reading the novel and within a week of finishing it, I decided to rent the mini-series. Although I knew the movie's outcome, I was completely enraptured by the story, the beautiful scenery, the excellent acting, and the romance. I could not turn the movie off and I found myself watching the entire five hour movie at one sitting.
