Rating: Summary: Top Notch Review: Great Adaption. I remember seeing it on Tv when it came out in 1981. Some of the Fx are a little dated but that all adds to the charm of it. I shall be interested to see what the Hollywood Movie will be like next year.
Rating: Summary: Dunfall Industries Award for: Damn Cool Video Review: One of the best adaptations of a radio series, or book, to TV that I have ever seen. Keeps true to the chaotic style of both the radio drama and the book that made both an instant clasic. Yet, this version also stands on its own, making it a worthy entry to the Sci-Fi genre. Robert Dunfall
Rating: Summary: Best Thing I have Read/Seen In my live (Rare Award!) Review: I read the book before the film, and will not say which was better, but I'm very picky about the films that I watch, and Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy Is by far the funniest and most enrapturing film I've seen as yet. I thing five stars is the understatement of the mellinia, and I hope for it to come out on DVD soon, so I can replay the most INTERESTING bits!
Rating: Summary: Whats with the words Review: Now i love HGttG. Ive seen the original tv broadcast and the DVD does an excellent job at recreating it. However the fact that one is completely unable to watch it without having to put up with either subtitles (why do you need english subtitles for an english show anyway) or production notes (most of which are complety pointless, 'this was shot on such and such date') it completely destroys the film as the screen is so taken over with this garbage that you can hardly ever see the actual show.I would gladly give this 5 stars if the made it so that you can actually see the show.
Rating: Summary: Toweltastic man! Review: H2G2 is a masterpiece. For those unfamiliar with the story, the earth is a big supercomputer constructed to determine the meaning to life the universe and everything. It inadvertently gets blown-up to make way for a intergalactic bypass just milliseconds before it finally computes the answer. We follow our hapless hero on his journey to that discovery and the answer itself! The theatrical sets are decidely low budget but the writing is of the highest calibre. I have to admit to enjoying the books much more than the DVD. However, the characterization and delivery of Marvin the paranoid android is hillarious.
Rating: Summary: decent price for the dvd set. Review: douglas adam fan 2^276,000 here. great set to own. bought this not too long ago when amazon was having a sale on BBC collections. (paid about $22) quality is decent -- can't expect much since it was filmed during the eighties.
still the series itself is great to watch with a great cast -- Simon Jones, Mark Wing-Davey especially. Must have for fans. However, many scenes are juxtaposed in the TV series since it was filmed after the first 2 books and radio series. I recommend listening to the BBC radio series for would-be avid fans or for pure curiosity. It follows the radio script more closely than it does the book so don't be too alarmed by the sequence of events when watching the DVD if you only have the books as a reference to anything H2G2.
The interviews, outtakes, and extra features on the 2nd dvd are interesting but a bit on the dull side -- especially the outtakes (basically 20 minutes of outtakes regarding ONE particular scene).
however, if you enjoyed reading the book, you'll probably enjoy trying out the DVD.
Rating: Summary: Forget the TV just listen... Review: The original was written as a radio play for the BBC - get that copy, listen and use your imagination.

Rating: Summary: Cheesy? Yes, but Review: it still retains most of the author's warped sense of humor. Loved the books and really liked this adaptation. Okay, so Trillian doesn't quite fit the book's character and Zaphod's extra head is really, really bad. It was still great and is definitely recommended for any fans.
Rating: Summary: An Outstanding Movie That Everyone Should See Review: I was first introduced to this movie when I was a kid and It was on PBS about 20 years ago. Suffice to say I had no idea what was going on and I just laughed because my dad did. It wasn't until high school when I read the books and decided to give the movie another chance. Although it didn't mirror the book, show me a movie that does, it was outstanding all by itself. To this day, every time I see the movie I get something totally new out of it. There are two distinct parts that make this movie, the first one is the guide itself. It wonderfully explains what is going on and why people think what they do in a way only the British can accomplish. From the explanation for the nonexistence of God. To the first humans being: the useless third of the Golgafrincham population. The guide is essential to moving the story along, and does this masterfully.
The second, and best part of this movie is that Douglas Adams nails philosophers, and logic. From the beginning of the movie when Ford convinces the foreman to lay in front of the bulldozer instead of Arthur. To the explanation of the creation of the world and, the ultimate answer being 42, but what's the question. To the end when Zaphod explains the ownership rights of thieves. Who can forget Marvin the Paranoid Android saying things like,"It gives me a headache just trying to think down to your level.", and the philosophers union demanding,"rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!" The only complaint I have are the campy sets. On the other hand, I think if the sets were any better it would take away from the overall feel of an otherwise classic british comedy. I urge everyone to run out and buy it, Or at least rent it.
Rating: Summary: Great Documentary about Douglas Adams on this DVD Review: I am a great fan of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and even bought a few related HGTTG t-shirts from a web site on the internet (www.graffitiusa.com) that makes hilarious parody of the Guide. But I am not a fan of the TV series, maybe I am a purist.
However, there is an excellent documentary about Douglas Adams on the second DVD. As far as the TV Series is concerned, anyone who heard the original radio version knows that the BBC "killed" the story, kidnaping the original material an trampling on the radio script while the original cast struggled painfully with cheap sets and awkward special effects (that awful rubber head hanging on the side of Zephod comes to mind) And so, somewhere along the path, the genius of Douglas Adams gets lost. It seems, Adams' genius did not translate well into the cheap BBC Television studios, as it often happens with great writers.
If you liked the radio version and/or read the books, and you "got it" then be content in that you have experienced the best that Douglas Adams had to offer, his pure, unadulterated genius.
