Rating: Summary: The best made for TV historical reenactment/drama of 2000! Review: I saw this version of the pivotal Revolutionary War Delaware river crossing earlier this year on A&E and then bought it myself. Jeff Daniels as General George Washington, and the rest of the cast, did an excellent job as did the writers in giving exceptional personality to all the characters portrayed within 90 minutes of movie. Being from DE/PA/NJ I was first engrossed by looking for powerlines and modern artifacts that might have been unseen in the backgrounds. By the third time I saw the film I was overly impressed by all the skill from all involved in 'The Crossing'. Perhaps the only negatives are the lack of far shots (due to limitations at the historic sites) and the fairly ridiculous lingering and overacting on the Hessians who die at the end. Perhaps the most 'Hollywood' influence was seen in the sequences with cannon fire blowing Hessians into the air while they are clearly hoisted via wire. Quite a good film, despite some of the minor stylistic flaws. Glover, Mercer, Knox, and the rest of the Intercontinental Army become tangible dimensional characters due to great writing and acting. I highly recommend 'The Crossing' for lovers of historical drama, war films, and plain good stuff.
Rating: Summary: The Crossing Review: I think that the Crossing was a great movie it showed the struggle between people and how the Americans struggled and worked together.
Rating: Summary: A well acted and accurate accounting of the historical event Review: In the last 10 years or so, Hollywood and cable TV has finally started to get it right when they make movies (Widescreen or TV) about historical events, and The Crossing is no exception. This is a well acted account of one of the major events of the War of Independence. Jeff Daniels portrays a superb George Washington, who was at times very impatient and hot tempered. History seems to gloss over the imperfections and vulnerabilities of our nations beloved figures, however this movie shows Washington to be flawed and tired at times like the rest of his army was. The uniforms, locations, and camp life were accurate as well as the filth and harsh existence the Continental Army had to go through. The movie did an excellent job of trying to film the famous battle, which definitely caught the Hessians by suprise. Overall, a well acted, accurately portrayed Revolutionary War movie.
Rating: Summary: Watch it with your kids. Review: It is very difficult to translate history to modern audiences. People of the past do not speak the same cultural language as modern Americans, or, to be more precise, modern Americans have difficulty understanding the motivations of their countrymen of 50, or 100, or 200 years ago. "The Crossing" is an excellent film. I mean that it excels in many respects, but not all. When I first heard that Jeff Daniels, of "Dumb and Dumber" infamy, was to play Washington, I slapped my forehead and groaned for history. Hollywood, once again, I thought, would fabricate history--replete with [standard] characters, stooges, faithful sidekicks and villainous bad guys (ala "The Patriot")--rather than make an honest attempt at what we know as the facts. I was wrong. Howard Fast wrote the novel and the screenplay. He is the same fellow who gave us "April Morning" and "Citizen Tom Paine", among other fiction classics of America's early Revolutionary history. Fast became a socialist, but always revered the spirit and determination of the Founders, which, perhaps, is why he became a socialist. I do not agree with his later political leanings, but I share his respect for the revolutionaries who made America and know we would share a hatred of the tyranny they opposed. Is this film flawed? It certainly is to the extent noted [....] The screenplay is not accurate in many particulars (Fast was not fastidious in this regard). However, it captures as few films have the spirit of the Revolution, the desperation of the times and the greatness of Washington. Daniels did a superb job, with the strong script, of showing why Washington was the leader he was. This is an entertaining and informative film for adults, but I think its chief value is as an excellent introduction to America's first hero and the long odds against which the people who made America labored. Their success was a miracle. If you are looking for a good film to excite your kids about America and her beginnings, pull out a map, show them the Delaware River and "Washington's Crossing" just north of Philadelphia and watch "The Crossing" with them.
Rating: Summary: Very entertaining Review: It's rare you find a movie that's not only educational but entertaining as well. And I'm not a person who usually watches educational films. This movie was different. Gripping and fascinating from start to finish. This should be REQUIRED watching for all school children! This movie brings history to life like few others EVER have for me. My knowledge of Washington crossing the Delaware started and ended with the famous painting. Now I know the incredible story behind it. Highly entertaing - and Jeff Daniels makes a wonderful Washington.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful portrayal of Washington Review: My girlfriend and I enjoyed this film and felt as though we'd really seen George Washington. The film begins in 1776 and ends with the conclusion of the surprise attack on Trenton. This is one chapter of history we feel intimately acquainted with now. Although it doesn't seem to have enjoyed a great budget and although it has just a hint of an educational taste to it, the Crossing seems far more historically relevant than films like Patriot or Pacino's Revolution. Daniels displays incredible posture especially while riding a horse and as a passenger in a boat through all hours of the night and thus quietly impresses upon us the dignity of America's first and fearless leader.
Rating: Summary: Elegant and supremely likeable film Review: Not only were the makers of this film able to get stiff and boring names to jump out of the history text, they were somehow able to create a believable and loveable chemistry without comprimising the mannerisms of the period. It was indeed as if this likeable crew had been together for the entire revolution, dragging the Continental Army through the darkest days of its struggle. As the movie finishes, you find yourself hungering for more, wanting to see another episode with new adventures for Washington and his staff. Although purists will find trivial deficiencies undoubtably forced by budget and dramatic effect (the battle should have been fought in a blizzard, for instance), there can be no doubting a splendid recreation of the people, period and surprising diversity of America during the Revolution War.
Rating: Summary: An Educational film for non-Americans Review: One of the best American-history films I saw.Jeff Daniels' as George Washington is almost perfect' with the supporting cast doing their best. It's a good educational film (American History) for us non-Americans.
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: One of the best and most-engrossing movies I've seen in years! I doubt that ANY of us have any idea of how much we DON'T know about this event in history. Even though it is a "novelized" treatment, I saw commentary from historical scholars (on the History Channel) who said that the account follows the facts very closely. And Jeff Daniels is the BEST George Washington since Barry Bostwick!
Rating: Summary: the crossing Review: Overall a very good movie, but not completely accurate. Hamilton was not Washington's aide at that time, the outpost before Trenton contained many more Hessian soldiers than the four shown. Also, they managed to get to Trenton and put up a small resistance with the other troops. Four colonial soldiers were wounded at the battle, not none, and Gen. Rall died a day or two after the battle, not in Washington's presence that was depicted. Overall,I thought it was a well acted movie, highly entertaining, and worth watching.
