Summary: I'm on my soapbox...
Review: There's been a lot of criticism of the A&E DVDs. Personally, I think this is the best resurrection of the TV shows so far. OK, there's a few bits which feature the "Edited" version, but less than most people would seem to imply. Some sketches WERE filmed and ARE listed in All the Words, but they were never actually broadcast, and no longer exist. The Political Broadcast that another reviewer commented on, and the Wee-Wee sketch are prime examples. It is futile to complain that they're not included. The other complaint is the censored versions of Summarise Proust and The Spot. Detailing really. The only bit that is missed and really required is the trailer at the end of the Dennis Moore episode, totally removed from this edition. However, with 45 shows to do, I think this could be forgiven.

The other complaint, the quality of sound and image, is also often invalid. If you compare these disks to VHS or TV recordings, this is far superior. In particuar, the filmed sketches have been greatly improved (the School Prizes, lots of It's Man appearances, and Undressing on the Beach come to mind). Any minor lapses in quality are mainly due to the original recordings from what I can discern.

Personally, I congratulate A&E on their Python DVDs. Incidentally, I think these are the best covers of any edition of the shows.... so there.

Summary: Best (Python ) Buy For Your Money
Review: After reading the previous reviews, I would have to agree that there are some errors in the transfer of this series to DVD, but it is (I believe) the best buy for your money (python wise). This is the first time I have owned ALL the Pythons in one set, and I find myself watching the episodes again and again enjoying them even more.

I am under the distinct impression that python is an acquired taste; you either love it or you do not. If you do not, you should not get the entire set (or even consider buying it for a friend). If you do, then the entire set is the best use of your time and money.

Of course I believe that A&E will try to come out with a better version of this set. Even a voice over with comments from some of the original band would have been enjoyable (note, there is only one audio track on all tapes.). A further bummer is the fact that there are only three episodes on each DVD (I wonder why they would bother with the DVD-format at all if they did not intend to take full advantage of its capabilities. One star is taken away by A&E by their lousy presentation of such classic material (shame-on-you!).

Criticisms aside, I would take even poorly transferred Python over commercial TV most days of the week (and twice on Tuesdays!).

So until (or if) PBS decides to marathon the python again, I will enjoy my DVDs.

Review: I Did write a review but thease 2 other previous people made bad comments about it which I found upsetting. Even though it has technical faults, the DVD is for python fans anywhere. Nice effort too. Shame about the cuts & Technical gliches

Summary: Serious Python purists beware...
Review: A&E made more than their share of sloppy and easily preventable mistakes when mastering this collection. Aside from the unwanted edits that were mentioned by a previous reviewer, I have found this set to have a relatively alarming (if not totally pervasive) quantity of momentary digital glitches, particularly in the audio. These are NOT problems with the source tapes, as can be verified by watching earlier releases of the same episodes on VHS or even on PBS. Since my career is in digital audio, I can tell that they were "generated" during the process of transferring to the digital medium.

A&E didn't bother to restore any of these episodes, and I can't blame them, but I do have to object to the fact that they apparently just threw these onto DVD so hastily without pre-screening the results of the conversion process. One almost suspects that this conversion process was performed largely unattended.

In addition, there are other confusing and ridiculous errata-- such as the episode "Intermission" showing up as "It's the Arts" when the DVD is stuck in the deck, even though the back of the case is labeled correctly.

Dear Sirs: I also feel I should complain about the patronizing and extraordinarily annoying menu titles ("Main Bloody Menu," etc.) and, along similar lines, the totally worthless "extras."

I'm glad these are out on DVD, and I'm glad to have the "entire" set at my digital disposal after wearing out my ten-year-old VHS tapes... but I can't help but suspect that A&E or the Pythons themselves are hoping to cash in on this series yet one more time at some later date, when they do a full restoration and fix their first set of grievous errors. Call me picky, but when I plop down close to 2 bills for a set of "historically significant" DVDs, I expect perfection... especially when this set was the only reason I purchased a DVD player in the first place.

Yours truly, Sgt. R.B. Knickers (Mrs.) (Deceased)

Summary: A Precident in Comedy
Review: Anyone who has seen or knows of Python knows what the legendary comedy troupe could do. The show is packed with irreverent satire, tongue in cheek situations, and at times the darkest of dark humor. You don't have to be British to get a stomach ache's worth of laughs from this show.

Admittedly there are the occasional sketches that fall flat on their faces. But like getting a shot, it only hurts for a second before you're moving on to something else. Which is why buying the entire collection of episodes is such a wise idea--you get EVERY great moment of Python you remember, along with some you never knew were there.

If you are willing to spend the money...even if you are new to the series...don't hesitate. This collection is worth the monetary investment in spades.

ALBATROSS!
