Review: As Homer himself might say "The Simpons" third season was
pretty good to the taste!Any season that starts with a fat
menatl patient thinking he's Michael Jackson has gotta' be good
and of course Mo expands his tavern,Bart reunites Krusty The Clown with his rabbitical dad.It's also the first year in whitch any voice experimentation on the characters and lack of definition shimmys out the window as the Fox cartoon hits it's peak (from whitch after 14 years it has failed to come off of).Suffice it to say if this will be your very first exposure to "The Simpsons" (and these days that is hard to imagine) then go no further then "The Complete Third Season" if you've got a DVD.I don't but I am strongly considering buying on after hearing about THIS!Worth it!

Summary: Episodes Great! Menu/Special Features Lackluster
Review: I felt like I waited forever for this set to come out. When I finally purchased it, I was very disappointed in the lack of menu options and the plain presentation of the episodes. Although this set really shows the Simpsons we know and love the packaging and menus leave much to be desired.

Summary: So many good things about this!
Review: My goodness is this set better than Season 2...and I don't just mean in the quality of the episodes. Although sure...the characters are better drawn and the jokes are more humorous, but the technical specs of this set over season 2 are way better. For example, gone are the stupid spinning heads that you would have to click throught to finally get to the episodes. In it's place is an ACTUAL main menu that, when you click on a choice (Play All, Episode Selection, Audio Options, and Special Features), something happens to the family on the couch. Whether it be the lights going out, the floor opening up to feature a Simpson BB(B)Q, or even a direct take on the Matrix. Even better is that it's all random so even if you click on the same thing more than once, you won't see the same animation every time.Overall, this is a really great set that shows The Simpsons when they really began to take off. I can't wait for Season 4!

Summary: "Your superior intellect is no match for our puny weapons!"
Review: The third season of "The Simpsons" was somewhat of a transitional phase for the show. As its audience got older, "The Simpsons" began showing more signs of sophistication than in previous seasons. The show's reach continued becoming broader, and its satirical edge even sharper. By this point, there was no subject that "The Simpsons" couldn't touch, and touch brilliantly at that. Perhaps most notable in season three was the increasing emphasis on family dynamics. Episodes like "Homer Alone," "Like Father, Like Clown," "Lisa's Pony," and "Saturdays Of Thunder" were all amazingly incisive views of the American family circa 1990. The narrow-minded may dismiss "The Simpsons" because it's animated, but live action TV has rarely (if ever) been so simultaneously perceptive and hilarious. Of course, targets other than the family get their turn for lampooning as well: every episode contains barbs aimed at topics from religion to politics to labor relations. We even get to see Bart's sensitive side in "Bart The Lover," which may well be the best episode in the show's illustrious history. Other highlights include the hilarious returns of Sideshow Bob and Homer's estranged half-brother Herb; perhaps the best "Treehouse Of Horror" special ever; and the introduction of Fat Tony and his mob cronies, who have been among the most consistently funny characters in "Simpsons" history. Season three is, in my opinion, the last season before the golden age of seasons four through nine, but of course it's still better than almost anything else that's ever been put on TV (can you say "Boston Public?").

Summary: Fox is starting to learn
Review: I won't speak of the content, it sells itself. So what is Fox starting to learn? How to make a DVD for consumers. Owners of the previous two season sets know that the menu system is the most intrusive and prevents you from just sitting down and enjoying a Simpsons marathon. For example, season two requires you to press the "enter" button on your remote control three times between animations before you even get the main menu. Then you have to go to a submenu and click on the "play episode" option to see one episode. To see the next episode you have to click the "main menu" option, then navigate to the next episode and repeat the process. This is the first DVD they've done with a "Play All" button! Finally, they are starting to get a clue. Now if they can just translate this concept over to the Futurama series...

Summary: The Start Of Something Good
Review: I loved The Simpsons from episode one. It was fresh, different, "add various complimentary adjective here", etc. However, as I got older and cried from laughing as the years waned on, the early episodes became less and less funny and incresingly crude and sophmoric. Granted, they are still worth owning as a fan and collector but overall, they aren't nearly as funny as they would eventually become. Season 3 is where it starts to pick up steam. Before the third season began, The Simpsons had their moments but a good number of "experts" saw the show ultimately taking a nosedive and becoming a footnote to a footnote. Season 3 changed all of that. It is due to this season of The Simpsons that is proclaimed by many to be "the greatest show ever made". Matt Groening's amazing wit and humor really started to blossom during these episodes and though not quite to the level of greatness achieved since, something metamorphic-like was happening. Characters were beginning to take on lives of their own whereas before, most characters aside from the Simpsons were mainly just backdrop. It was in season 3 that people began to align themselves with the insanity of Mr. Burns, Ralph Wiggum, Principal Skinner and the like. The extras, once again, are disappointing when compared to sets from Family Guy and Futurama. For once, I'd love to see an extensive behind-the-scenes or a lengthy chat with Matt Groening to find out what lurks behind the mask. However, one cannot complain about much with the exception of the respective seasons not being released in a more timely fashion.

Summary: Maniac Simpsons Fan: Please release them ALL!!!
Review: I must immediately own the DVD sets as soon as they are available as I'm a crazy fan of the Simpsons. In 1990 I was in college in Manhattan and my friend and I used to race up and down the stairs to make our subway connections after night class...we had to make it home for the Simpsons on Thursday nights!!
My life would be completely different without these characters and situations in my head. I have religiously taped almost every episode but now its 14 years later and I've moved a few times. Certain episodes NEVER get on the re-runs, and if they do, they are often edited in bizarre ways.
CLASSIC lines and clips are on this third season DVD set. Bart working for Fat Tony and the other mobsters. Homer buys Lisa a pony but has to work at the Kwik-E-mart to pay for it (remember Homer asleep while the automatic doors crash into his head?)Dog of Death was one of my favorite episodes for YEARS as the dog looks so much like mine that people on the streets of Brooklyn sometimes say "hey, that's the Simpsons dog!" and I went to vet school so I find the veterinary hospital scenes funny. Its just another example of the millions of topics the Simpsons have addressed... they might as well be my neighbors, I feel I know them so well.
BUT... I would like to have ALL the episodes on DVD sooner rather than later. Only three seasons out and WAY TOO MANY left unreleased... I still want to be around to enjoy them all... uncut,unedited and vibrant looking. I really don't care about the commentary. 3 out of 4 Simpsons fans that I asked also didn't find the commentary interesting (too many people on there in my opinion as well as not enough info about the specific episodes.)
PLEASE RELEASE THEM WITHOUT COMMENTARY!! I can't wait till season 7 comes out so I can see Homer on disability as the fattest guy in Springfield ("the fingers you are using to dial the phone are too fat.")

Summary: Worth the wait for some of the funniest Simpsons shows!
Review: In my opinion, this is when the Simpsons really had everything going for them. The animation was clean, the voices were pretty much smoothed out, and the comedy and storyline were equal in greatness. In prior Simpsons DVD sets the commentary was (at times) more interesting than watching the actual show, but with this season the shows themselves definately outshine the commentary. One good thing about the commentary is the voice actors actually join in; although most of the writers and such speak most of the time. Another plus is the foreign tracks, were you get to hear spanish Homer which is funny for awhile then the novelty of it wears off and you probably will go back to english. There is supposed to be voice out-takes but I've yet to find them they hid them pretty good...that or I'm not looking hard enough. I won't go into too much detail about the episodes themselves since all us hardcore Simpsons fans know them by heart already anyway. This is the season when the show had a frenzy of guest stars: Micheal Jackson, Magic Johnson, Aerosmith, Sting, Steve Allen, Danny Devito and a load of baseball greats. It is great to see them uncut like the other DVD sets before it. The price had seemed to climb a bit from the last season but it is well worth it. Now we must endure the waiting for the 4th Season...in my opinion the pinnicle of Simpsons seasons.

Review: This is the best Simpsons DVD to come out so far. The episodes are uncut, so you'll think that you're watching episodes that you've never seen before. If you are a Simpsons fan, than buying this DVD is a no-brainer.
