Rating: Summary: Great Minor Celebrity Spotting & A Whole Lotta Hasselhoff! Review: "Knight Rider" is a show I vaguely remember watching from childhood, yet wasn't familiar enough with to retain much beyond the talking car, K.I.T.T., the most amazing vehicle *of all time*. The first thing that struck me when watching this DVD is the sheer hilarity of David Hasselhoff's acting. I mean, his line delivery is just amazing (and I mean that in the most literal sense)--he's always saying things that just sound like one-liners, like everything that comes out of his mouth is meant for posterity. And the curly mullet is almost topiary-like in its precision. Additionally, the wardrobe is quite fabulous, featuring Members Only-style jackets of every color and fabric imaginable, brightly colored polo shirts and huge belt buckles.
Aside from the staggering genius of D.H., there are quite a few minor celebrity cameos. And I mean *minor* celebrity. Not like Scott Baio or even Willie Aames, but people who are guest stars on other '80s shows, where you're like, "Hey! I think that guy was on Webster a few times!" but honestly have no idea who they are, just a vague recognition of their faces.
The music, too, is a great encapsulation of the '80s. Pure Casio keyboard demo-style entertainment.
Overacting is the norm for the cast members of "Knight Rider", extras and all, especially the "bad guys", who act really stereotypically "bad", sneering constantly and narrowing their eyes while delivering lines dripping with vitriol and eee-vil. David Hasselhoff exudes pure unadulterated beefcake charm 'n' masculinity. You can see why Michael attracted so many ladies.
This is highly recommended if you have a high tolerance for cheese, and/or a deep need to indulge shameless nostalgic impulses.
Rating: Summary: Good, clean, mindless 80s nostalgia Review: Along with `The A-Team' and `Airwolf', `Knight Rider' was one of the few live-action prime time shows I bothered to tune in to on a regular basis when I was but a wee `Norch. And along with the other aforementioned shows, `Knight Rider' was a major contributor to my development into the 80s-boob-tube-kitsch maven that I am today. No situation was too silly, no plot hole was too big, no plot gimmick was too hackneyed, none of the fight scenes were too Shatnerian, and not one word of `witty' banter between the show's star and his driver (heh) was ever too corny for this young'un. `Course, when one takes into account the insipidness of the Saturday morning & weekday-afternoon `toons I used to veg out to at the time, the plots and dialogue of `Knight Rider' were a big step up on the intelligence scale...
Anyhoo, on with the show (so to speak). This initial season helped launch the amazing trash-TV career of the hunky David Hasselhoff. Without his extraordinary thespian efforts in this show (heh), `Baywatch' probably would have... well, would have pretty much been the same I imagine. Sure, he wouldn't have been the executive producer, but it's not like that's a particularly challenging job for such a show...
But I digress. From our hero's vengeance-seeking in the pilot eppie to helping out damsels of every stripe in distress to helping little ol' ladies across the street, our heroes would give it their all in pursuit of justice against those pesky criminals who operated "above the law" whilst keeping Michael's `do from gettin' mussed too severely. Oh yes, and let's not forget the obligatory light comic-relief moment featuring KITT interacting with an unsuspecting passerby. Yep, nothin' like a good, cheap laugh to keep me tuned in...
A few notable first-season highlights include:
- "Knight of the Phoenix" (pilot)- The commentary track featuring series creator Glen Larson and star David Hasselhoff wasn't all that interesting. Well, save for near the end, when Hasselhoff gets a bit too uppity when he points out a continuity error involving his character.
- "Deadly Maneuvers": This one's got a great stunt flub; see if you can find it!
- "Trust Doesn't Rust": KITT's evil twin KARR is unleashed upon the world, a year before Michael would get an evil twin of his very own. This eppie features that Larry guy from "Newhart". Ya know, the guy with the brother named Darryl, and the OTHER brother named Darryl? BTW is it just me, or does KARR's voice sound a lot like Optimus Prime from the original "TransFormers" cartoon? Man, is my 80s-ness showin'...
- "White Bird": Our hero is reunited with his fiancé from his previous life. It's so... *sniff*... touching *Sob*. This episode would also be part of an ongoing mini-saga that would span the rest of the series...
Also included are a few behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as a few interactive goodies like the KITT dashboard, where you can move the cursor-thingy over one of the car's dash features, press "Enter" and find out that feature's function. The behind-the-scenes featurettes are reasonably interesting to watch, granted you can stifle your laughter when they discuss the show's "high quality" and "incredible acting". Hasselhoff has a little to say, and even goes so far as to show off the Knight Rider lunch box during the end credits. Ya know, I used to have one of those lunch boxes; it's a shame I don't remember what happened to it. `Course, it was pretty beat by the time I lost track of it, so I doubt I coulda' made much off of it on eBay anyway...
Oh yes, then there's the `Knight Rider 2000' TV movie, which was a half-hearted attempt to get a new `Knight Rider' series going. I found this a rather mediocre adventure, although it did manage to recapture much of the cheesy silliness that made its prime-time predecessor so memorable. And if I had my `druthers I'd have preferred to see this developed into a series than that gawdawful and mercifully short-lived `Team Knight Rider' series that came out several years later...
Overall, the first season `Knight Rider' adventure is pretty good for what it is-- a fairly vapid action-oriented TV escapist adventure whose antics and action sequences were slightly less preposterous than those of `The A-Team'. Don't be expectin' any deep thinkin' here; just kick back and take in a passel of nice hour-long segments chock-full of the kinda mindless fun that only a wonderfully cheesy 80s high-tech boob-tube action series can deliver...

Rating: Summary: Edited versions Review: Be careful: These are not complete versions of the episodes, but edited ones. Whole scenes are missing, perhaps cut to give commercials (which of course are not on the DVD) more room. I know the episodes from German TV, where they have been shown in full length, and there ARE parts missing. This really takes the fun out of it when watching those classics again. I for one will not buy the second season if it is as incomplete as the first.
Rating: Summary: COOL CAR. REALLY BAD ACTOR Review: David Hasselhoff can not act OR sing. If you can ignore this then the show isnt bad. K.I.T.T is awesome. He was the real star of the show. A trained monkey has better acting skills then Hasselhoff.
Rating: Summary: Hasselhoff is the swedish word for Cheese Review: David Hasselhoff. Why is it when you hear that name, you immediately laugh? Is it because he is walking camp personified? Whatever the reason, "Kinght Rider" launched his career as a TV star, singer, and now I hear, dare I say it, 'rapper'? Ice T himself is supposedly producing David's first rap album.
Well, as for Knight Rider, the car K.I.T.T is awesome. This is the supreme ride. KITT is the Batmobile to the tenth power. Every single episode had to have KITT jump. Even if it really didn't have to. David would flip the switch and whhooOOSSHHHH! Off KITT would go. No car ever got the airtime that KITT got.
Along with a super sexy mechanic, Knight Rider was all 80's good time fun. If only Mr. Hasselhoff quietly disapeared after it was over. I could never stand that guy's hair.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: First off, I am so glad that Knight Rider is on DVD and that I got the first season to add to my DVD Collection. I remember watching the series as a kid in the 1980's on TV when I was Eleven Years old. Know that it is on DVD, the sound and picture clairity are fantastic. The menu organization is also neat as well including the Bonus Features. It is neat to say that I am impressed by this Box Set, which I can personally say is equal to my Star Trek Voyager Series DVD Sets as well, or maybe a hint better, at least menu wise. For all of you Knight Rider Fans out there who have not purchased this unique and cool box set, I highly recommend you buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Rating: Summary: It is about time! Review: I thought that by joining the Columbia House DVD club and subscribing to "Knight Rider" that I would be getting all the episodes from my most favorite 80's show! Not!!
