Summary: Amazing Series with stunning visuals
Review: I was amazed. I hadn't seen this show on TV at all, I just picked up the DVD at a hunch. First of all let me say, this DVD set - realistic or not - has not hurt my love for football at all. The drama and the acting are outstanding, the actors fit their roles perfectly, especially Omar Gooding was an excellent cast imho.
Maybe all those different things happening to such a small group of people is a bit beyond realistic, but at no point it made me tune out of the show.
The cinematography, the visuals as well as the sometimes graphic approach captured me instantly, I loved the pace and the rhythm the story progressed at, making one show just about "Half Time" is just an excellent idea.
I can recommend this show to anyone who likes a fast paced drama series with excellent acting and a sports background. It definitely was worth the money for me. I join my fellow reviewers in hoping that HBO will pick up the Playmakers franchise and whip up a season 2 of equal quality.

Summary: An Excellent Show for sports novices and sports junkies
Review: I was not interested in watching this show at first, but after the first episode, I was a "playmakers" fiend. The show was right on target. It tackled modern day issues that not only affect athletes but also non-athletes. The show addressed drug-abuse, domestic violence, homosexuality, infidelity, health & fitness...all issues that affect everyday people. The main characters had their own private drama, but all of it was dealt with in the locker room, bar room, and on the football field. The team truly functioned as a team and offered support whenever possible (well, they didn't care much for the whole homosexualtiy issue). I was pissed when I heard that the NFL complained about the show, thus forcing ESPN to cancel the series....whiners and wimps!! It would be great if another channel, like HBO or Showtime would pick up the series; these channels are definitely not afraid to air/produce shows that touch on gritty, but real life topics.

Summary: Even me a huge football fan hated this show
Review: I watched the whole entire season and it made me mad to see that they had all players in the NFL portrayed as a bunch of thugs. Even the running back hits hits his wife and takes sterriods. It hurt the NFL image and the game of football more than it helped it. The series started out where I liked it but the repetitive guys screwing up every episode got old fast where by the end of the season I was bored with it all. Not a good series. If your a true fan of the sport by buying this your only helping more movies show the "dark side" of the sport which will ultimitly make everyone think the sport is full of a bunch of thugs and any sports player or fan of the game doesn't want that to happen. If this had been a story about the game and showed games and stuff with the occasional player messes up but not every episode I mean thats just stupid and fake. ESPN has only released movies and TV shows that have showed the "dark side" of sports. Like A Season on a Brink you have Bobby Knight who chokes players, in Play Makers they just show a bunch of thugs playing football, in Junction Boys you have Bear Bryant also a crazy coach. I play football and love football and feel that this hurts the game more than it helps it. Yes I know there are some players who do act like they do in the series but not all players which is what made me mad.

Summary: Playmakers is Excellent
Review: It was THE best new drama in 2003 and one of the best all together, and i'm not just saying this as a football enthusiast. This is an excellent depicition, albeit slanted toward the negative aspect of the game, of professional football. I don't think that you will find a more realistic depiction of a real idea on television. This is a fabulously concieved, written, directed, and filmed drama and it would be a shame if ESPN does not make a second season just because the NFL doesen't like the program. Excellent show.

Summary: I can't believe there won't be more!
Review: Like most women in Tennessee, I do like football. However, I do not revolve my entire lifestyle around football. If I need to do something, I'll do it, even if it interferes with a game that's on. BUT, I did revolve my week around when Playmakers would be on! My boyfriend of nine years and I watched every episode, together, without fail. I wouldn't even answer my phone if Playmakers was on. When the season was over, I told my boyfriend I was actually looking forward to next football season, because Playmakers would have a new season, too! Now that I know they won't, it breaks my heart. For all you women who didn't watch it, it really is something that men and women can watch together. It has enough drama for women, and enough sports for men.

Summary: Finally the truth about football
Review: Much like the success of "The Sopranos", Playmakers is a gritty tale of honest, hard working people as told by rich, Hollywood stars. I never watched much football until a recent job assignment where I was the sole brainiac among several hundred construction workers, therefore I watched what the crowd watched on the community television. "Playmakers" (as well as real games) were the typical fare.

Enduring the yelling and screaming of the real games (not to mention the channel-flicking between games), gave me a new perspective on the fans. However, the series "Playmakers" gave me much more insight on the players. I learned that most football players are ignorant (or not), violent (or not) or homosexual (or not). I also learned that Managers and Owners are smart (or not) and often have tremendous control (or not) over player's lives. Which of course, rhymes with wives, and I was certainly eager to see the bevy of buxom babes that the players are banging in each episode (assuming they're not the Gay Guy, of course). That's the beauty of a TV show - the full exposition of truth under the broad brush of generalities. TV for everyone, about no one. Much like Presidential politics today. Buy it. It's better than being home alone.

Summary: ESPN and the NFL are idiots!
Review: Playmakers was the best show in 2003 in my opinion. As a woman, I don't care much for football, but the show caught me from episode 1. I couldn't wait to see the new season, then I heard it was cancelled. Excuse me if I don't understand why, but how stupid can the network be for listening to some bonehead barbarians that play sports for a living and decide that a fictional show isn't worthy of being seen by its fans? Jeers ESPN, your channel is not on my tv anymore. You can go to hell. As for the bonehead football players in the NFL, if you think that this show is what made you look so bad, you need to take a second look in the mirror...all you are is selfish! As for the stars of Playmakers, especially Jason Matthew Smith, you all are very talented and I can't wait to see the even better things you bring to another network that will actually appreciate you guys more than the idiots at ESPN.

Summary: Quality Ignored
Review: This is a fascinating, engaging, television show. A show of true quality that does not talk down to its viewers. That is probably why ESPN cancelled it, and that's a damn shame. The NFL should be brutally ashamed of itself for thinking that its public image would be effected by what is clearly a work of *fiction.* Why does the NFL think its public image is that high anyway? Don't get me wrong I love football, but I hardly consider the game, or its players & coaches to be paragons of virtue. Does anyone? ESPN should be ashamed (though not as much) for caving to the pressure. Hopefully, another network will pick up this fine, fine show so that we can be treated to another season. At the very least, the producers should be allowed to give the show a decent finale instead of leaving it unfinished.

Summary: Mind-blowing
Review: This is the most exciting, thrilling series I have ever seen. I wish a second season would come out, but the NFL had to whine. That's what actually happens in the NFL, but o well, the NFL ruins another thing....

Summary: playmakers=incredible show
