Rating: Summary: The Best on DVD! Review: I just bought the what's Happening collection, and I can't wait for the second complete season to come out, I've watched and laughed so hard they brought back alot of memories, I got a chance to meet with the late great Fred Berry in my home State of Maryland where I had found out that Fred Berry himself had bought a home here in the Prince George's county of Maryland, I talk with him and had him do the dance for me, just like watching him on television again...he gave me a kiss and an autograph...he is truely missed by his friends here Prince Georges county Maryland.
Rating: Summary: Hey, hey, hey! Review: What's Happening was a favorite of mine back when I was a kid. Back in New York, we only used to get to watch it in re-runs (no pun intended)during the summer.Almost 20 years later, I am watching the show again and it's hard to believe that this show still makes me laugh. What this show has that today's shows don't have is warmth and loads of laughs. The set offers no commentaries or extras, but if you love the show, it's worth to pick-up at this low price.

Rating: Summary: Fat Jokes Galore! Review: This was one of my favorite shows when I was a pre-teen... which was the last time I'd seen this show. Watching this series as an adult is a slightly different story. I'm afraid to say that this neat old series doesn't hold up as well for me as it seems to for the other reviewers here. One thing I'd forgotten in the last 20 years is how laden with fat jokes each episode is! It's difficult to laugh knowing that all the obese cast members have since died while still fairly young (and their seemingly good-natured responses to these jokes look forced to me... though I may be projecting a bit... hard to say). There are some things that DO hold up, however: That bratty little girl Dee cracked me up at every turn. I can just imagine what the folks in charge of casting were thinking when they discovered her during auditions! Danielle Spencer was obviously not a child actor, but just a regular kid with an acting job. And the camaraderie between the main cast members is fierce. These people enjoyed what they were doing (mean spirited fat jokes aside) and it shows. I had also forgotten that Shirley Hemphill wasn't a full-fledged cast member yet. Her name doesn't appear in the opening credits at all during year one. AS FOR THE DVD SET ITSELF... Columbia House did it right this time! Each episode is presented IN ITS ENTIRETY, and the sound and picture quality are top-notch. Even the main menu has a fun look to it. I think I'll keep this one in my collection a while. Regarding GUEST STARS... This series is just like others from its time when it comes to past, present, and future star sightings: Debbie Morgan and Tanya Boyd (both of whom went on to have long careers in daytime soaps), Vernee Watson, Rosalind Cash, Wolfman Jack, Dick Van Patten (not yet of "Eight is Enough"), David White (Larry Tate from "Bewitched"), Robbie Rist (2 years following his Cousin Oliver stint on "The Brady Bunch"), Alice Ghostley, Mel Stewart, and Chip Fields (Kim Fields' mother). "ROOTS" TRIVIA NOTE... Thalmus Rasulala, who played Raj and Dee's father, also played Kunta Kinte's father in the TV mini-series Roots (before he was abducted and sold into slavery), which also co-starred Ernest Thomas (RAJ!!) as one of Kunta Kinte's childhood friends. Both "Roots" and this first season were produced around the same time. And, finally, for those who aren't aware... Henry Mancini is responsible for that bouncing, infectious theme song! Hey HEY Hey!
Rating: Summary: Brings back memories...this is great! Review: I really miss this show. I was so happy to see it come out on dvd, I wasted no time in buying it. Amazon has the best price I have seen on it, so if you liked this show like I did BUY IT NOW! I can't wait till Season 2 comes out. I can wait a little longer for Season 3 because the first two seasons were the best. RIP Mabel King, Shirley Hemphill and Fred Berry.

Rating: Summary: I LOVE this show!!! Review: As I was 5 years old when What's Happening premiered in 1976, I didn't know about it. I discovered this gem of a show when it was in syndication...channel 5 (here in NY) at 5pm every weeknite. I was so happy that it was released on DVD. From that smile inducing theme song to the laugh inducing characters and plots, this show somehow flew under the radar. You can't go wrong with any of the characters...Dee, Raj, Rerun, Mama, Dwayne and Shirley. Heck, you can even spot a pre-All My Children Debbi Morgan. This show was funny without being gross with the constant sex jokes that are so common now. As Madonna sings on Nothing Fails, I'm not that religious, but I thank God that DVD's exist and can bring older shows to a new generation and to nerds like me who live for 70's and 80's sitcoms. I hope Alice, Laverne & Shirley, and The Golden Girls are next. What's Happening is one show that EVERYONE can watch and enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Momma, I can't breathe.......LOL Review: This was one of the best sitcoms ever.
