Summary: A show that deserved a DVD release
Review: With every freaking show that ran for five minutes getting its own DVD of late, it's refreshing to see one that truly deserves it.

It calls to memory a time when Fox actually ran cutting edge comedy. The episodes are funny and edgy and bordering on offensive but in the right way. It's comedy meant to provoke, doesn't take itself too seriously but is still intelligent. Sadly, not a whole lot of comedy on television does that.

Some of my favorite bits are Stiller's amazing impersonations of Bono and Springsteen, Cape Munster and Pig Latin Lover. It's lovely to see such a cast of talented people - Janeane Garafalo, Stiller, Andy Dick, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross essentially free range through skits, doing what they like when they want to although it does make the lack of anything like it now glaringly obvious.

Summary: I wanted the MTV version
Review: I got screwed buying this, because these weren't the episodes I thought I was getting.
I didn't realize it until I listened to some of the commentary, but I got the wrong version of the show I wanted. Before the 13 episodes of the Ben Stiller Show on Fox, there were 12 episodes on MTV - an entirely different set of shows. I remember howling in laughter at those episodes.
When I ordered this DVD, I thought those were the only shows he ever did. The Fox show - which I never saw much and, all these years later, didn't realize were different from MTV - are not all that good.
Is there anybody out there who has the MTV episodes?

Summary: Moments Of Comic Genius
Review: As one of the few living people I know who actually caught this show when it was on TV, I was thrilled to find out it was coming out on DVD.

This show features an amazingly talented cast including Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Andy Dick, and Bob Odenkirk.

There are some skits that are laugh-out-loud funny, such as U2: The Early Years (with Stiller as Bono playing a Bar Mitzvah), Tom Cruise on Broadway (with Stiller's incredible Cruise impersonation), The Pig Latin Lover (featuring hits such as Uck-stay On Ou-yay by Lionel Richie), and my all-time favorite, The No No No Guy.

As other reviewers have stated, the bits between the sketches do drag a little and take away from the humor of the skits. I'm sure many others will be watching this with remote in hand ready to hit SKIP when these come on. And yes, a few sketches fail to be funny, but I guess that can be expected from such a young cast just getting their start in television.

Overall, any fans of intelligent sketch comedy will enjoy this.

Summary: This DVD is a blessing from God above!
Review: I am so glad I finally get to enjoy the brilliance of the Ben Stiller show as I wasn't allowed to watch it when it aired originally, due to strict TV watching rules laid out by the authorities...anyway I finally get to see the comic genius of not just Ben Stiller but all the great crew behind this show. Ben Stiller is so good in all the roles he plays and I believe he is underrated as an actor. Sure everyone knows who Ben Stiller is but they don't realize how great he is and what he does for the industry. Everyone, buy this DVD and support the people who made this show possible.

Summary: Very, very good but...
Review: ...not quite as funny as I rememeber it. There are a few lame bits but most are good and a few are adult diaper-time funny. But the between sketch "improvs" are incredibly juvinile and bring the show to a grinding halt. Thankfully, you can forward thru them. Of note is how really pretty Jeanine is! Recommended but not quite the Holy Grail I had thought it was.

Summary: O'Pootertoots is PEOPLE !!!!!!
Review: Thank GOD ! I've been waiting for this to come out for a long, long time. To put it simply, the Ben Stiller show was one of the most inventive, entertaining and consistantly entertaining "sketch comedy" shows I've ever seen. I'm not alone in this opinion - see the message board at jumptheshark.com for hordes of geek appreciation for the show.

I caught some old episodes on Comedy Central during a marathon the other year, and was amazed how well the show (with all of its early-90's pop culture references) has held up over the last decade. Looking back, the casting and writing was a near perfect amalgam of some very entertaining individuals, and I can't remember a single show during its one season run that didn't entertain me.

I thoroughly recommend this to anyone with an interest in sketch comedy, "the 90's", Ben Stiller (or any of the cast/crew, for that matter), or PJ O'Pootertoot's.

Damn you, Fox ... Damn you for cancelling this show !

Summary: Better than most everything on TV....
Review: But that's not saying much. The cast is very funny (But...). Lots of skits are topical, and don't hold up well twelve years later. Some style doesn't time travel well either: shaky, hand-held camera work, breaking the "4th wall" by bumping into the camera, showing dressing room, etc. It's that "do-it-yourself" thing seen in so many "edgy" Mountain Dew commercials and grunge-light videos of the time.... Some skits seem formulaic -- a pop icon placed in a new pop context: Bono meets Partridge Family, Munsters meet Cape Fear, Agassi meets Action thriller, Cruise meets Broadway, Oliver Stone meets Disney. On the whole, the humor is probably dependent on you caring about what the show tweaks: Cruise, Bono, TV itself, etc.... If you don't care, it's not that funny.

Summary: THIS IS THE BOMB!!!!
Review: I watched this show 10 years ago and even watched it when it was on MTV. This show was so far ahead of its time that FOX cancelled it because people just didn't know what to make of it. It captures the times so well. It brings back so many memories for me. Ben Stiller is a comic genius and this series shows it. BUY IT TODAY YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

Summary: SHUT YOUR STINKIN' TRAP!!!
Review: Skank. Counting with Bruce Springsteen. Die Hard 12: Die Hungry. Bad Twist Ending Theater. Ask Manson. Ahhh...this takes me WAY back. To 1992, to be exact. I had every episode (with the exception of #13) on tape, and was very sad to see it go. Thanks to Warner Brothers, as well as the writers and performers of The Ben Stiller Show, for giving us this terrific DVD. Christmas came early this year for me!
