Summary: THE TICK is a great, underappreciated TV gem
Review: All too often, TV network executives demand edgy new shows, only to disavow them when the show proves TOO edgy for their conservative tastes. In that regard, no matter how you slice it, THE TICK was probably one of the most abused television series in history, based on Fox network's treatment of it. When it first appeared in November 2001, this show was hailed by critics for its comic take on the superhero genre. Unfortunately, Fox under promoted the show and moved around the schedule to such a degree as to eliminate any chance for it build up any kind of audience. Of the 9 episodes made, 8 were allowed to air before cancellation. Fortunately, this rather wacky show gets a second life in this basic 2 disc DVD set that includes all 9 episodes. Based on Ben Edlund's classic comic, the series follows the adventures of the Tick, a big blue-bug suited superhero who definitely lives in a world of his own. With his moth-suited sidekick, Arthur, the Tick tries to make the City safe from all evil doers, while dealing with such issues as fighting such threats as the Apocalypse Cow or his need to acquire a license to operate as a hero.
Patrick Warburton is perfectly cast as the title hero. With his open expressions and goofy manner, he totally embodies this super-doofus. David Burke is solid as the put-upon Arthur, while Liz Vassey is a treat as the beautiful, yet somewhat overbearing,Captain Liberty. However, it is Nestor Carbonell who tends to get the biggest laughs as the self-important lothario Batmanuel. Much of the humor is very wacky and surreal and the show could be described as a superhero version of TV's SEINFELD. Fans of the comic and the animated TV series might be disappointed in the lack of superhero-type action, but otherwise it captures the original's sense of absurdity.
THE TICK is a classic case of a fun TV show that deserved better than it got from its network. As such, this is definitely worth recommending to comic book and TV fans alike.

Summary: If you'r a guy I mean a real guy this is a must buy!!!
Review: I had some gift cards to Best Buy and was about to leave when I saw it, the Tick. I've read the comics a little. And the person I was with said I shouldn't get it, it looks dumb. I just had a fealing, though. I remember seeing a slight second of it a long time ago and Ticks voice stuck in my head. He sounded like the guy off of Family Guy who's in the wheel chair(Hey Petter!) So I risked 23 bucks on somthing that had a big chance that I wouldn't like it but yet I was excited at the same time. I popped it in right away(last night) and watched to piolt. Right away you hear that voice(The voice that was stuck in my head) and right after that you are laughing so hard it is like you couldn't have dreamed of somthing so funny! It is percicly what I wanted to see and more, the sets are fantastic, the costumes, the effects, the music, the script, the direction all superb at it's finest. It really makes me sad that the show was canciled, and only 9 episodes also! I really wish there is more, they should come back and do some more and make a movie(s), I can now tell the person I was with last night that this was smart buy!!!

Summary: Hilarious
Review: This is laugh-out-loud funny. A reviewer who said the commentaries were hard to find wasn't looking too hard because if you play each episode individually rather than just "Play All" it gives you a choice before each one that has a commentary to turn it on or off. I am sorry this series did not get a chance to develop. You really have to follow the dialogue to get the good jokes. It is like Seinfeld in Superhero suits.

Summary: Such a great show!
Review: I loved this series and this DVD! It's the perfect gift for fans of the cartoon and of the comic books. It'll be a collectors item - this show rocks! Funny Funny Funny!

Summary: What are they talking about? Nothing at all.
Review: This show had every right to be cancelled, between the stupid (but not funny) jokes, and the terrible production values, it came across as a wild informerical gone crazy. Cheers for Fox to give this show the axe.

Summary: Where is the cartoon DVD set?
Review: Contrary to most reviewers, I thought this live-action series was a pale imitation of the original cartoon. Several episodes of the 'toon were released on VHS, but it's time for the full series to get the DVD treatment. This belongs right up there with "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons" (and should replace "Futurama"... pee yew!!!).

Summary: Justice is served!!!
Review: Well, what can I say about this DVD. It's a matter of taste really. The Tick is something I very much enjoyed which was why I bought this DVD. If you've seen the Tick cartoon this tries to be similar, however it's more like Seinfeld meets The Tick. Very few fighting sequences and not really that similar to the cartoon except for the Tick's loose grap on reality and simplicity. The DVD does have 3 episodes in which you can listen to commentary from the Tick's creator Ben Edlund. I thought that brought a good insight into those who are relatively unfamiliar with this short lived series. If you like the Tick this is a purchase you may want to make...when the price is right.

Summary: The Tick-Entire Series-Blows
Review: Anyone who watched this Series and thought it was "brilliant" has fallen victim to the Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome. You can look as hard as you want but youre still not going to see something that isnt there. I think the entire series can be summed up by one of the directors quotes when he said something to the effect of "in this episode most of our jokes were hit and miss. Yes.. 9 out of 10 people wouldnt think it was funny and didnt laugh, but that 1 person thought it was hilarious." Every joke in this series fell flat on its face with no hope of recovery. The story behind every episode was pathetic and the acting was terrible. Even Patrick Warburton, who was great on Seinfeld and his voice over for the Family Guy, became almost intolerable to watch, with his incessant overacting and unnerving theatrics. If you watch (let only dish out the money to buy) this series, you will not only become stupider but lose precious time from your life which could be better put to use by doing something worthy of wasting your time. If you feel compelled to buy this series, do yourself a favor and flush your money down the toilet, it will give you a greater sense of satisfaction, then the driving force that will make you want to gouge out your eyes after viewing this trash.

Summary: As good as the original COMIC (and better than the cartoon)
Review: ...and the cartoon was one of the best things on TV when I was introduced to it as it aired in '93. When I found out it was based on an indie comic book I went to the local comics shop and poured through the original series of twelve books that were penned and drawn by Edlund. (see http://www.newenglandcomics.com to get back issues and re-issues)

When I heard in 1999 that a live action series was going to be produced, I was skeptical that they could pull it off. They not only pulled it off, but they convinced me that Warburton was born to play the Tick, and that live action is the true medium for this fable.

Unfortunately, Fox didn't understand it. They buried it at first then they started switching times. They presented it out of order. Ratings were understandably bad, especially coming only a couple of months after 9/11.

On one of the DVD commentaries, it was mentioned that the producers hoped the DVD would sell enough that maybe they'd get the greenlight to do a full-length feature. That would be nice, but I think it would be better to shop the series to another network that would better grok what the show was about.
Since at the moment the sales rank is 220 (don't know what that means for DVDs but it sounds good) and the local large Best Buy has already gone through a couple dozen copies, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Finally, another word to the fans of the cartoon Tick. Chill out, grow up. Yes, it was a great series (even featured Firesign Theatre! how cool is that?!). But the live-action series is much closer to the spirit of what Ben was writing about in that original series of comic books.
