Summary: You face....The Tick!
Review: "The Tick" was another one of those great, edgy television shows that Fox simply didn't give a chance (along with "The Critic," "Greg The Bunny" and others). The casting was absolutely perfect...Warburton does an excellent job as the Wild Blue Yonder, and Nester Carbonell (of "Suddenly Susan" fame) was the perfect Batmanuel.

The DVD is, sadly, not perfect. The extras are pretty worthless, and I'm at a loss as to why it needed to be a 2-DVD set with three episodes on one disc and six on the other. They all easily could have fit on one disc and left the annoying "extras" out.

I cannot criticize the content, however; the show is just as hilarious as I remember it. The episodes "The Funeral," "Couples" and the wonderful pilot (with Christopher Lloyd in an uncredited role as Mr. Fishladder, Arthur's former boss) are the shining points of the series. And from the viewpoint of a hearing-impaired person, it's a joy to watch a DVD that is properly closed-captioned, with no spelling mistakes, few omissions and without the annoying all-caps some DVDs insist upon.

This show was funny, edgy and irreverant...completely different from anything else on TV at the time. In the words of the Tick himself: "When the world says jump, we say pass the salt!"

Summary: Warburton rocks
Review: Great, show, wish there were more than 9 but that's okay.
They ought to make a movie with Warburton, he's brilliant and it wound find a bigger audience for sure.

Summary: Good series, too bad the DVD doesn't live up to it
Review: The Tick based on the comic book and cartoon series of the same name was a breath of freah air when it aired. Too bad it got killed off after only a few episodes aired. I won't good into the plot too much other than to say that each character is perfectly cast, from Patrick Warburton's oblivious Tick to the somewhat slimy Batmanuel.

The quality of the video on the discs is good, but considering the source was a tv show it won't be pushing your DVD player too hard. Audiowise it sounds good as well.

If you liked the show when it was on the air, or you like wacky comic book style humor, then this is the set for you. Although you might have to ignore the lack of extra's on the discs.

Pro's:
-Good series
-Good video quality

Con's:
-Not much here other than the shows themselves.
-Only 9 episodes exist.

Equipment used:
21-inch tv
Sony Playstation 2

Summary: Awesome!
Review: This series was dubbed "too witty" for prime time TV by the powers that be at Fox (a.k.a. the mindless idots). Instead of a comic masterpice like "The Tick", we are subjected to the likes of "My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance". I guess they just could not appreciate humor in lines like:

"I am the silver ladel of justice pouring it's fresh cream over the just-picked strawberries of crime"

This is quite possibly the most original and hilarious "sit com" ever, if you can call it that. The Tick and his cohorts, Arthur, Captain Liberty, and Batmauel are superheros in "The City". The only twist is that just about anyone can choose to be, and is, a superhero as well. It is a profession about as common as the next, with both competent superheros as well as those that are miserable failures. Our protagonists fall somewhere in the middle as they go about their daily business of saving the city from evil-doers. The Tick is a new arrival who isn't quite all there: "Batmanuel: 'No offense' Tick: 'Non comprehended'" But, what The Tick lacks in cognitive abilities, he more than compensates for in sheer strength and invulnerability. This is a must-see for fans of off-beat humor the likes of Comedy Central's "Adult Swim" shows. I can only hope that the cartoon series of "The Tick" will be available soon.

Summary: SPOON TO THE BIG BLUE BUG OF JUSTICE
Review: In the DVD commentary, series producer Barry Sonnenfeld exclaims, "This is the best thing I've ever directed". After The Addams Family and Men in Black 2 I'm reluctant to think that's encouraging. I'd like to think that this is by far the best live action sitcom based on a cartoon, that's based on a comic book, that's based on a demented arachnid, that stars Patrick Warburton, that's directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, or THE FUNNIEST SUPER HERO SERIES SINCE ADAM WEST DANCED THE BATUSI!

Everything just comes together in this series. From Patrick Warbuton in the part he was born to play to Ben Edlund's extremely quotable dialogue. "Aurthur's broken. We need 200 ccs of tender loving care, stat". "No it was 10:04, I remember because I was playing shout out the time". "I sure would like a slice of your righteous combat pie".

For members of The Tick's Secret Society, and you know who you are, there are a few changes from the past incarnations. Abandoning the usual super hero fare and opting instead for a Sienfeldesque super heroes in a coffee shop show. Some ideas remain including The Red Scare, The Terror and the side kick episode. It's a shame that the show was cancelled before the inevitable "The Tick vs. Barry The Tick" Episode.

Saban owned the rights to all characters but The Tick and Arthur, so you won't see Man Eating Cow, Chairface Chippendale, El Seed, Die Fledermaus or American Maid. Although they are missed Nestor Carbonell's Spanish gigolo BatManuell is possibly an improvement over the one joke Die Fledermaus. David Burke who doesn't quite fit the physical attributes of the comic book Arthur nails the neurotic non-side-kick perfectly. Liz Vassey's Captain Liberty is the weakest link as the Elaine of this Sienfield super quartet, but her character doesn't have as much to do as the other players. She works with what she has, delivering her lines with a hilarious rapid-fire timing.

Director Barry Sonnenfeld, writer Ben Edlund, producer Larry Charles and actor Patrick Warburton seem to have been destined for their roles here. Notable guests are Dave Foley as the super hero deprogrammer and Ron Pearlman as Fiery Blaze. Bo Welch, long-time Tim Burton collaborator, provides the production design. The limited budget seems to be a help instead of a hindrance, adding to the "super heroes in their down time" feel.

The DVD extras aren't much to talk about, just some commentary on a few episodes, but I'm happy seeing this series on DVD at all. I don't expect this DVD will sell enough copies to warrant a series revival, a la Family Guy, but I hope it will generate enough revenue that FOX can start production on "The World's Dumbest Television Execs".

Summary: BUY IT BUY IT, BUY IT FOR YOUR FRIENDS!
Review: This series is one of the best I've ever seen, it just really pees me off that there's only 9 to watch (but then I got peed off when I got to the end of the 160 odd eps of Ranma 1/2)

Once you watch the show you won't be able to get The Tick's lines out of your head, thanks to the great writing and Warburtons PERFECT performance and delivery, he's even better than the cartoon Tick. But it now, we need more episodes or a movie!!!

Summary: Good news for UK Tick fans.
Review: The Tick does not have a very high profile over here in the U.K, the cartoon series was only sporadically broadcast on BBC2 some years back, but never in a regular time slot.
The comics are only available via specialist comic shops, I personally have never read one.
Having bought other region 1 discs from Amazon, the Tick DVD was brought to my attention in a personal mailing. I was previously unaware of the live action series, so big thanks to Amazon for bringing it to my attention.
It's great, I echo every positive comment that has already been made on this forum.
The main reason I am submitting a review though, is to point out to other U.K. residents who may be contemplating buying this disc, that the DVD is actually region free! This means it will play on any player, whether it is multi-region or not. So, if you don't own a multi-region or 'chipped' player you will still be able to appreciate the brilliance of this TV series.
Please God, let the big-screen version happen!

Summary: Normal people like it too
Review: My showgirl girlfriends loved it, and they normally dislike every comedy show that I like. So did my parents and the rest of my family, which is also unusual.

I am glad they did not bother with the action aprt of the series, which is just unnecessary, and focused on the jokes etc.

It was largely material from the cartoon series, but I still got a kick out of seeing the characters come to life.

The tick's antennae and the absolutely perfect performances by virtually every cast member and even small part actor, make this well worth seeing, though.

Summary: SPOON!
Review: First off I want to compliment Amazon's "people also bought" feature that suggested The Tick to my wife after she bought me an Evel Knievel DVD. Who'd a thunk I wasn't the only person in the world a fan of both.

Now the DVDs, they're great. This was a great show that was doomed, either it wasn't going to find an audience (what happened) or Edlund's famous inability to write stories fast (which has kept the comic book marginal and sporadic for it's entire run) would have kept it from maintaining a proper TV schedule. Knowing it was doomed I resolved to enjoy every minute, and now I get to enjoy every minute over and over. Anybody comparing this to the cartoon shouldn't, compare it to the books ( http://www.newenglandcomics.com/ ). Both the cartoon and the live action show were based on the books and the varied from the book in very different directions (frighteningly enough the live action show is much closer to the books than the cartoon, IMHO).

Now hopefully they'll release the cartoon. And maybe a movie.

Summary: Better than I thought...
Review: I was a big fan of the cartoon version of this show, which was really my first exposure to the Tick and his world. I later read some of the graphic novel assemblages of the comic book, and was thrilled when I heard about a live-action version being made by FOX. I wasn't sure what to expect, and when I saw the first episode (the Red Scare episode) I was pretty let down, except for the "Fight fire with ARTHUR!" line, and didn't watch the rest of the series on TV. I got a gift card for Christmas, went shopping with it, and happened upon this. I had no idea that they had made a DVD of the show, and since it was really 'free' money I decided to go ahead, and out of devotion to the Tick idea, buy it and see how the rest of the series went.

I'm glad it did. It got a lot funnier as it went on, and I wish FOX hadn't cancelled it. By Arthur, Interrupted, the show was really clicking, and all the actors seemed to really understand their roles and the way the comedy had to work. I encourage every Tick fan to go ahead and buy it - it's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good.
