Summary: beat up 16mm TV station copies, but....
Review: ...you DO get the show and it WAS great.

LOTS of splices. Bits of missing dialogue. The films from which they made the transfer....in pretty bad shape. BUT...it's just like Saturday afternoon TV on that local station way-back-when.

Summary: "One Step Beyond" deserves much better
Review: Can't some company, somewhere give "One Step Beyond" the respect it deserves? I have long admired this fantastic, bizarre anthology series. I remember watching it as a kid first run on television and being scared to death.

"Your tour guide into the unknown" John Newland is enough to scare the pants off of anybody, especially the way he wanders through a lot of the episodes. He's usually not content to just show up at the beginning like Rod Serling. While Serling presented himself as the sardonic writer/host of "The Twilight Zone," Newland as director/host of "One Step Beyond" is presented with all the charm of a funeral director who has just heard about a 25 car pile-up on the interstate. He's just plain creepy.

The episodes presented here are, for the most part, great. It's the prints for most of the episodes that are lousy. Most are too dark and are full of scratches and specks of dirt. But the worst sin of all is that many are so choppy from splices that it ruins a lot of the dialogue, and dialogue is an important element in the enjoyment (and sometimes understanding) of "One Step Beyond." These prints look like worn-out 16mm films found in the backroom of some television station.

Why can't some company out there give the same treatment to "One Step Beyond" that was done a few years ago with "The Twilight Zone"? In other words, clean up the picture and the sound, digitally remaster each episode, or, better yet, find the original negatives and work from those. Let's see this "journey into the unknown" the way it was meant to be. Geez, it that asking too much?

Summary: Scared Me, Too
Review: I agree with "Scared Me Then..." I first saw the show when I was eight years old. My two sisters and I would stay up late on Friday nights and huddle under a blanket on the sofa watching each episode. It was by far the most intelligent programming on TV at the time ( If anyone remembers such drivel as Huckleberry Hound and Touche Turtle, you'll appreciate this statement!) Even if it did scare the pants off us and have us all sleeping in the same bed, we wouldn't have missed iot for anything.

Summary: Public Domain material often sells for $1 per disc .
Review: I cannot imagine why this 12 or 8 DVD set sells for so much money when the producer did not have to pay any distribution rights for the material now in the public domain. My only criticism is price and that it should be priced accordingly for what it is. Why if you did not read these reviews and based on the price you might expect to be receiving a beautifully mastered set from excellent pre-print materials.

Summary: Worth the Wait?
Review: I have been anxiously awaiting a complete release of one of early televisions best. Unfortunately, this was not it. Furthermore, the 8 disc set is simply the first 8 volumes out of this 12 volume box set. I made the mistake of ordering both, so I will be out the return shipping.

VCI has missed the boat. The un-coordinated realease of episodes packaged seemingly at random is very frustrating for a serious collector.

Having said this, if you enjoyed this seriers in your youth as I did, or even if you've never seen an episode, this collection is well worth the money. While not complete (many of the available prints of some episodes are just unwatchable)you will enjoy all 20 hours!

VCI has done an acceptable job in packaging and menu design, and re-masted each episode from the best available prints. Even so, these episodes have not been restored and the many imperfections can be a distraction.

I think the errie sound track, entriguing scrips, and early appearances of by some of Hollywoods best make this series a must for everyone's Sci-Fi collection.

Summary: Scared Me Then and Scares Me Now
Review: I saw One Step Beyond when I was 7 years old and it scared the socks off me. I bought this 12 DVD set and it still scares me 45 years later. I have no problem with the DVD quality of this set. My only complaint is that not all the episodes are out on DVD. I hope the manufacturer hurrys up! The ones that really scared me will hopefully be on the second set.

Summary: Good, not great quality
Review: I'll start off by saying, I have never heard of One Step Beyond. It was way before my time. I read the reviews and became curious! So I bought the 12 DVD Box Set. I loved it! John Newland as narrator awesome! He takes actual cases of paranormal experiences, past lives, esp, apparitions, out-of-body experiences and make dramatizations out of them. A few of my favorites:(1)Tonight at 12:17-A pregnant woman has erie premonitions about a plane crash. (2)The Peter Hurkos Story pt.1-Based on his life story. How he discovered his psychic abilities. (3) The Peter Hurkos Story pt.2-Peter tracks down a killer, using his psychic abilities. (4)Person Unknown-An artist uses the death mask of a victim to set a man free. Just to mention a few. I have to agree with one reviewer it's cheaper if you buy the volumes seperately. I don't know why. The box set is a little pricey, but it's well worth it! DVD transfer very good.Sound quality very good.I am a twilight zone fan,but twilght zone can't compare to one step beyond! I can see where twilight zone got alot of their ideas. I want to get all episodes!! I've already ordered One step Beyond-Collection 1. I recommend you either by one step beyond seperately or the box set! You won't be disappointed!

Summary: Good, not great quality
Review: I'm a fan of ONE STEP BEYOND, and was delighted that half the series (49 episodes) was released on DVD as a set. Packaging and menus are fine. Video/audio quality of most of the transfers is OK -- episodes are mostly uncut, though at least one I checked out had a 3-minute edit. I'm guessing Delta used the best prints they could find -- not sure why they didn't use the much better prints that the Sci-Fi Channel showed a few years ago. Anyway ... for the price, this 12-disc set is pretty much a bargain. Let's hope Delta releases the other half of the series this year!
