Summary: M*A*S*H Season 5 - Best Season Anywhere
Review: Season 5 of this incredible show is by far the best in my opinion. With episodes like "Movie Tonight" and the emmy award winning episode "Dear Sigmund" proves my comment. Season 5 is sadly also the final season Larry Linville brilliantly plays Major Frank Burns, and Margaret Houlihan gets married in the last episode of the series. I love all M*A*S*H but again, season 5 is unbeatable.

Summary: Its one of the best shows televison has ever produced.
Review: So far I have seen these 5 seasons many times over. The laughter keeps on coming.

My all time favorite show and looking forward for season 6. The play all feature on the later season dvd made a good addition to our lazy lives. Knowing it was recorded in the 70's, its picture quality on DVD is great.

The characters made a change in season 4 with the introduction of B.J and Sherman Potter. They fit right in after a couple of episodes.

A great buy for all the MASH fans and the rest who just like a good chuckle.

Summary: Who needs or wants Dumb Teen Shows
Review: Teen shows, that's all the TV shows that you hear about coming to DVD, but thankfully more "classic" and substance shows are making their way to DVD and MASH is among them. This was when they actually wrote, directed, and worked on the shows, and MASH had a lot to say about the stupidty of war and how one group of people serving in the army got through it. Can't wait for all 251 shows to be on DVD.

Summary: Just what you would expect GREAT
Review: The format is great pretty much as the last 4 seasons except they finally listened to all of us and added a "Play All" feature on the main menu.

I now own all of the first 5 seasons and look forward to the remaining seasons. The only thing I don't understand is why it takes so long to get them released.

Summary: I'm Getting Older and Release Time is Longer
Review: There is little to add to any previous praises for this set, but that never stopped me before. MASH is without a doubt my favorite TV series ever. I put it above "The Andy Griffith Show" and "All in the Family" (other personal favorites), as one the finest sitcoms ever put on TV, and there are many fine ones.

The movie was a tremendous picture, IMHO, and the TV series was even better. Why? Many reasons including cast, writing, chance to expand on the characters more each week, and overall just plain great TV. I won't list all the characters and bore you with stuff you probably know better than I, but it suffices to say, the series was put together with complimenting, professional personalities. I have seen every episode, in reruns--several times over, even before this series of DVDs began to come out. Each time I watch one, I almost feel as if I am back in very familiar surroundings with close friends. Weird?? I suppose, but each time I watch any episode, even though I have seen it several times before, I enjoy it more.

My only complaint is, and many others have said the same thing, it is taking a very long time to get the series out--almost six months or more between each of the seasons. I am an old man and would like to get them all before I am gone. Please! I hope they don't stop this series before completion, as sometimes happens.

If you like "MASH", the TV series, as I do, this is a must.

Summary: PLAYALL feature has arrived!
Review: This review is for the production of Season 5 of the DVD Collector's Edition and not the series.

This DVD set contains a wonderful PLAYALL feature listed at the main menu. Clicking this will play all episodes in order, first to last, then return to the main menu.

The following DVD player behavior applies to mine and most that I've seen.

In PLAYALL, you can FF or NextChapter past the credits of one episode straight into the next episode without loosing your PLAYALL settings. However, my player will not go into the previous episode. Meaning, it will only go as far as the beginning of this episode's Chapter1, which plays the MASH theme.

Both the language audio and subtitle chosen remains active from episode to episode during PLAYALL. I have not tested what happens with a langauage that may exist in one episode but not another. Two ways to change the language with PLAYALL. The easy way is to press the language button on your player/remote to cycle to, say, no-laugh track, or to one of the other languages available. The hard way is to choose an episode, change the language from the episode menu, return to the main menu, and then PLAYALL. Same thing applies to subtitles. Remember, the laugh track is on by default.

If you've collected the previous seasons, you may have noticed that normally you can NextChapter at the beginning of every episode to bypass the intro/theme.

The rest of Season 5 is the same as for all previous. Please see my original review under "M*A*S*H - Season Two (Collector's Edition) (1973)".

Thank you, Fox, for including this wonderful PLAYALL feature in this DVD set. I hope you include this feature on other DVD series collection sets, and especially also include an audio track with NO LAUGH TRACK, like you've done with all MASH series season sets so far.

Remember, always release the DVD by pushing on the center post to keep from bending or cracking the disc.

Summary: 6th Season: June 6, 2004. <<-->> 5th Season: With Spanish
Review: This season does come with the Spanish subtitles, although it is not shown in the technical data.
I am, too, collecting all of the M*A*S*H seasons... and am truly looking forward for the sixth season, which SHOULD come out in June 6, 2004.

The only thing I have to regret is the way the producers say good-bye to the characters... Well too touching for Henry Blake (I "loved" it)... but Trapper and Frank Burns didn't get the good-byes they deserved... A sad end for some glorious characters in the M*A*S*H series.

Love to watch it...
And heck, I'm only 19!

Summary: Another season
Review: This was the final season for one of the actors, Larry Linville, who played Major Frank Burns. Linville claimed that he went as far as he could in making this character look like an azz. Unlike the first four seasons (and the movie, too), Frank doesn't get to sleep around with Major Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan in this season. Two episodes into this season, Margaret gets engaged, and in the final episode of the season: Margaret gets married, with Frank acting as best man for the groom.

This was the second season for two of the actors: Mike Farrell (who played BJ Hunnicut) and Harry Morgan (who played Col. Potter). It being their second season on the show, it was easier for them to find their characters' humor and their seriousness, when needed. It really added some more to the show. In season four, they were just starting out.

This season featured some rather interesting episodes. One where Radar gets some phony promotion orders, promoting him to Lietenient. The phony papers were made by Hawkeye and BJ to give Radar a taste of "what it feels like to be an officer". The psychiatrist, Dr. Freedman, makes two appearances in this season. In the first, he comes to the 4077th to relieve some of his own stress, as opposed to some patients'. He joins in on a practical joke with BJ. In the other episode, he comes to aid Hawkeye, when he experiences some sleepwalking and nightmares. Also the CIA fruitcake, named Col. Flagg, returns to the 4077th when Major Houlihan turns up missing; at a time, where North Koreans are spotted sneaking around. A crossword puzzle becomes a great pass-time, in one episode. Also, the priest, Father Mulchay, has some good moments in this season. One where he goes to the front line, persuaded to when a wounded solider at the 4077th starts talking about the front line, and Mulchay's hero: a priest who calls himself 'Boom Boom'.

Many good episodes, and many good laughs make season five of MASH a great one. It is Major Burns' last season. In the next season, season six, we are introduced to Major Burns' replacement. A rich guy from Boston named Charles Emerson Winchester III, one of the most smug characters you'll see.

Summary: My FAVORITE season...
Review: Way, WAY back in the olden days of the early 1970's, when this amazing show premiered, I became an INSTANT and FAITHFUL fan, right to the end of it's run.

When each season became available on DVD, I was delighted at the prospect of being able to collect all the seasons for my own. Both the audio and video quality of the DVD's seems to me to be outstanding in each season's realease.

I was ESPECIALLY pleased to find that "Play All" feature" was FINALLY added on this season's menu. MAN! Having to manually start each episode in season's 1 - 4 was REALLY ANNOYING.
Substantively, season 5 is my favorite, being the year where Margaret FINALLY gives Frank the "boot". I love the way her character is allowed to make huge leaps of personal growth in this series. The only serious critisism of the otherwise completely wonderful M*A*S*H* television series, is the fact that the character of Frank Burns was never allowed equal opportunity for personal growth; I think that if this HAD occurred, Larry Linvile, an AMAZINGLY gifted performer, might not have left the series. I think Mr. Linville's downfall was that he was so incredibly awesome at making Frank Burns, the total Jackass, come to life. The truth is, I've always chaffed at the way they locked his character (as well as virtually ALL other conservatives and/or career military characters who appear on the show) into a farsical, bigoted stereotype; e.g.: "all conservatives are adulterers, liars, hypocrits, stupid, war mongering, greedy, selfish, insensitive, disrespectful, abusive pigs that BLINDLY pledge allegiance to a flag and a country that 'everybody knows' should not have even been involved in Korea." The fact is, all those who call themselves conservatives and serve America in uniform are NOT anything like the Frank Burns character. The writers and directors- the powers that were the driving force behind the series, certainly DID have their little adgenda- and more's the pity. The picture they painted of the way things were then was extremely lopsided; and at times, even slanderous.

Nevertheless, I, being a secure, FREE American, LOVE the series anyway, and will treasure it always. And all you other M*A*S*H fans, don't hesitate to buy this or any of the other seasons curently available. They are top notch quality. Can't wait for season 6 to come out!

Summary: One of the most overated TV shows of all time.
Review: When I tell people I think that Mash is overrated, they look at me like they want to kill me. In fact I have found that to say Mash was overrated is like telling people you worship the devil. I just don't understand it, why does everyone love Mash? I respect the show, I'm not going to say it sucked or anything ignorant like that. However, it was not that good. I rarely found it funny, in fact the only value that I ever saw in it is in some of the more serious episodes that showed the effects that the war had on people.
I think the reason this show is so overrated is because of the time it was made and the subject matter. When you take that away, what you have is an average sit com. This review will probably start a riot, but I'm just speaking the truth.
Another thing is that it is clear to me that there was some sort of subliminal homosexual messages portrayed between the relationship with Hawkeye and Honeycutt. Their whole interaction with each other and the fact that they were always in their robes and in their underwear to me reveals that the makers of the show wanted to make some kind of statement.
Mash was more about a message and a political statement, it really wasn't that funny at all.
