Description:
Almost 40 years after her death, Judy Garland remains one of the major cultural icons of the 20th century. In this continuing series of DVD releases, you get the opportunity to revisit her rarely seen TV show, which featured Garland at the peak of her comeback powers--but also at the beginning of a steep decline prior to her death in 1969. The fourth in this series of rereleases of The Judy Garland Show (which died after one year of being murdered in the ratings by Bonanza), this double-sided DVD contains four hour-long shows: numbers 8, 19, 24, and 25. In the first two, Garland gamely tries to adapt her unique talent to the TV variety-show model, with weak skits and uncomfortable banter with guests. They include such bizarre sequences as Judy chatting about baseball with the late Leo Durocher (and singing a duet with him on "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"), performing with the bluegrass specialists the Dillards (who were forced to play the hayseeds, wearing suits, bowties--and bare feet), and acting in skits with comic Jack Carter. The latter two shows are for the true Garland lover: two hour-long network TV shows that essentially comprised solo concerts (with guest appearances by Vic Damone and the Robert Cole Trio), with Garland just standing there and selling the songs. The DVD also includes an audio track of the show's executive producer, film director Norman Jewison, sharing his memories of working with Garland, as well as outtakes from the shows. --Marshall Fine
