Summary: 5 Stars for Pippi but 1 Star for the Lousy Dubbing!
Review: Like other people who have reviewed this Pippi Longstocking DVD I was a child of the 70s who grew up watching the Swedish Pippi Longstocking movies and never knew that they were actually episodes from an old Swedish kiddy show that were strung together for the movies and I loved the idea of watching the TV show versions but like the others I'm very disappointed with the new dubbing. I mean come on, Pippi's friend's name is Annika not Anna. Why in the world did the British makers of this DVD find that they had to change Annika to Anna? Is it hard for British people to pronounce Annika? I think not! I think that just because Anna is one of the most popular names in the UK they felt that Anna would be more acceptable then Annika but I think that was a big mistake and I hope someone decides to put out a new set with better dubbing and will go back to using the correct name of Annika and I like the suggetions of the original Swedish language tracks with English subtitles. It's a shame that this Pippi set is such a disappointment and they should have known that people would notice the difference between Annika and Anna! And as another reviewer said, they should have realize that TRUE Pippi fans would be unhappy! I also agree that they shoudn't have used British slang if they were going to sell this to non-British English speakers. They shouldn't use any slang at all, no British slang, no American slang, etc! Just basic English that everyone can understand!

Summary: They Could Have Done This Better!
Review: Me and my friends were big fans of the Pippi movies in the 70's. I have always known that the movies were made in Sweden and had been dubbed into English and that the dubbing wasn't really the best but I still loved the movies but I was very surprised when I found out that this was originally a Swedish kids TV show and that they actually took episodes from the show and edited them together for American theatrical movie releases and now the TV shows have been put on DVD and that's nice but it has been redubbed by people with British accents and I have absolutely no problem with that but I was very disappointed that they felt that they had to change things. Why did they have to change Annika's name to Anna? It's not like Annika is a name that is unheard of in the The U.S.A. and The U.K. it's not hard to pronounce either and is actually a beautiful name and I also think that on the DVDs they could have also included the original Swedish language track with English subtitles. Personally I would just rent this and hopefully a new DVD set will come out with a Swedish language track and English subtitles and new English dubbing where they don't make unnecessary changes and Annika will be called Annika and not changed to Anna! And I hope to see the American Theatrical movie versions put on DVD too! I grew up watching them and would love to have them on DVD!

Summary: NOT THE COMPLETE SERIES
Review: Pippi Longstocking aired as a Swedish TV show in the late 60's. It was a 13 EPISODE series. Each episode was about 26 minutes long putting the total running time at 340 minutes. ALL 13 of these episodes are currently available in Sweden in a collection of SIX DVDs (but only in Scandinavian without English subtitles).
This DVD is ONLY 6 episodes of the full 13 Episode series, so do not be fooled into thinking you are getting the "complete" series in this 160 minute long DVD.
Like many, I have always been bothered by the dubbing in these films, and I have the same problem with this release. However, I have seen the original Swedish language version and that too is dubbed. Like many European films, it does not appear that this show was filmed using ANY natural sound. Since even the orginal Swedish version has awkward dubbing, I would not worry too much about the awkward English dubbing in this release. There simply is no version of this show that features a non-dubbed voice track. Still for the sake of the MANY MANY recently immigrated Swedish-Americans it is an absolute shame that Hen's Tooth did not provide the Swedish language track as an option.

Summary: Astrid Lindgren's Heroin hits the Small Screen
Review: Pippi Longstocking was one of my favorite TV shows as a child. The freckle-faced, red-headed Inger Nielsson was the only "Pippi" I've ever known. I looked forward to Sunday mornings to see new adventures with the little orphan girl. Pippi always fiercely denied being an orphan, because her mother was in heaven and her father was King of the Wild Men in the Land of Taka Tuka.What kid wouldn't want to live like Pippi Longstocking, in a colorful villa, with a monkey and a horse, and a treasure chest filled with gold coins that could make any material wish come true. Next door neighbors Tommy and Annika are ever-faithful friends, willing to go along with any new scheme Pippi might think up. As an adult I have reservations about Pippi's rude, self-centered, disrespectful and obnoxious behavior. The girl certainly could use some parental guidance including rules and responsibilities. The fantasy of it all is, that here's a 9-year old who does as she pleases and there's no one to stop her. The 1968/69 TV series is a Swedish/German co-production. Unfortunately the English version delivers rediculous dubbing, including totally mis-matched voices that become a real pain to the viewer. The worst example is the refined and gentile middle-aged "Miss Pricilla", who sounds like a 15 year old drama student-wanna-be, horrible! The wonderful vocal theme song, which I remember verbatim from the German version is reduced to a mere instrumental blurr. The original story by Astrid Lindgren has won fans all over the world, with books sold in the tens of millions, translated into many languages. This DVD contains 6 episodes (of a total of 40 in the series) neatly finishing each little plot line in 26 minutes. Kids may enjoy it, but the lame "new ideas" Pippi invents to have fun are soon becoming tiresome. I can recommend this DVD version of the Pippi Longstocking TV series only to people who wish to reminisce about their own memories with Inger Nielsson as the incurrigable Pippi. I doubt that this DVD will create new generations of fans.***

Summary: Picture is Excellent - Dubbing Sucks
Review: The British translators had no interest in making the dvds relatable to non-british english speakers. Pippi says things like, "Cherio", "Jolly Good", and other slang. Simply beastly! She says, "However does one...?" instead of "How can I...?" Her voice sounds to proper for her character, it is difficult sometimes to know who is talking - Anna, Tommy, Pippi? Their voices are too similar, especially when the dubbers speak when no mouths are moving (and I don't mean the narration). Sometimes the character's mouths move and the dubbers say nothing. I would enjoy the original Swedish with subtitles. As for children, they might not understand much of the British dialogue, I know I blanked out on some of it.

Summary: This is a must own for children of all ages!
Review: The only thing wrong with this is the British dubbing and translation. The accents are fine for the children, but seems a bit to prim and proper for Pippi. A lot of things got anglicised in translation making the whole thing feel more British than Swedish (ex. Annika=Anna, Villa Villekulla=The big house). It is also unfortunate that the theme song was just an instrumental. However, the quality of picture is great and there are some scenes that aren't in the movie version. It would be great to see a version where you could choose to have it dubbed or in it's original swedish with subtitles

Summary: Finally Pippi unbutchered!!
Review: The Swedish original with subtitles as an option would be the ideal, but this is still great. Finally we can view part of the full TV episodes that they later slaughtered into two full lenght movies in the US. There were 13 30-minute episodes made in total, so we're talking 6 1/2 hrs of Pippi that was cut into two 1 1/2 hrs films!!! This DVD contains 6 episodes. Release the rest as well!!! Great buy and over three hours of FUN. Rejoice!!

Summary: Pippi Longstocking The TV Series
Review: To begin with, the British voices are find, but take a little getting use too. The words they speak are a lot closer to what they really are saying. Where as the first English dubbed movies are sloppy. Most of the music is the same with just a few ad ins. The transfer from film to DVD is crystal clear and colorful. The best part of these episodes being released is that they have added in all the extra footage which completes the story far better than the choped up movies which left so much out. I can not wait until they bring out the rest of the series to DVD. I'm in my thirty's and have many other adult friends that watch Pippi too. And so many kids love it. With the remastering it's like a new Tv series. Oh, and great Dolby digital sound as well. Thanks www.Amazon.com for making these wonderful and enchanting series avalible to us. Mike.
