Rating: Summary: Another magnificent season Review: Season Four continues to reflect the very highest standards of writing and performing. James Gandolfini is at his usual brilliant best, as the episodes seem to be lurching towards some sort of cataclysmic resolution. But I need to talk about Edie Falco ( Carmela Soprano ). I don't want to give any of the plot away ( for those few of you who might have missed these programs on HBO ). However, I will say that Ms. Falco delivers what may very well be the single most gut wrenching, stunning piece of acting that I have ever seen in any media. If for no other reason than Ms. Falco's astonishing work, this set is well worth purchasing.
Rating: Summary: Everybody had a hard year.... Review: Riddled with subplots that explored loss and sudden tragedy, the just-out-on-DVD "The Sopranos: Season Four" appeared on HBO 16 long months after a hugely popular third season and almost immediately underwhelmed a lot of viewers. Season four started out slow, and found its characters blanketed under a haze of post-9/11 anxiety, but finished as one of the better volumes in this vivid, violent soap opera about New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano and his strangely compelling families. And, anyway, the show's generally slow pace has always been one of the qualities that makes it so rich. Unlike most network programs, "The Sopranos" never seems to be in any hurry to reach a conclusion, the episodes play out like chapters of a novel, and when something big or dramatic happens, the twists are much more shocking and effective. Despite its sullen pace, and a not-too-convincing flirtation between Carmella and sensitive thug Furio, "Season Four" was still full of completely satisfying moments: the slow descent of Tony's sidekick Christopher into heroin addiction, and the hilarious intervention that helped pull him out of it; the sad demise of Tony's mistress Gloria, his racehorse Pie-O-My and his psychotic cohort Ralphie (who checked out in one of the series' best and grisliest episodes); and the raw season-capping split between Tony and Carmella. TV series on video are basically review-proof. Hardly anyone is going to buy or rent a series unless they know and like it. But in a steadily growing DVD market that's suddenly crammed with box-sets of TV shows barely worth remembering (much less shelling out 30-100 bucks for) it's good to see a show, like "The Sopranos," that's actually worth preserving.
Rating: Summary: cost Review: Barnes and Noble sells this for $69.95.
Rating: Summary: Very good and getting better Review: There has been a lot of flap-doodle about the fourth season being a bomb. This is simply not true. Every episode was very good. There has been talk about this being the last of the "The Sopranos" Don't believe it. If they were going to pull the plug on the series, Uncle Junior would not have received a mis-trial. They would have thrown the book at him. Also, Tony would have ended up on a slab in the morgue after his wife shot him (in self defense). And Chris would still be the tratment center - Pauly would have been picked up on a murder rap for wasting the old lady, and the list goes on. We still have to find out how Tony will react to the change Pauly made of him in the painting with Pie-O-My. There are to many good things yet to be revealed in this series, so believe me, they will be back. And millions are awaiting this in great anticipation.
Rating: Summary: Great Episodes. A very good season. Review: The fourth season was erratic in terms of storytelling but Christopher's substance abuse problems and the related consequences with other characters provided among the best, if not the best, scenes out of all four years. The other characters and stories are very good also (and compared to almost any other show, except maybe Six Feet Under, even an "ok" Sopranos is well beyond any other show in terms of drama and character development). In terms of the DVD my only complaint is that there are not enough commentary tracks offered. Still worth buying.
Rating: Summary: Great Season Review: Ok, I admit, I missed all Soprano's seasons until I got the first season for my birthday last month. I enjoyed the powerful acting and the evolving story of this dual family. I have since, on my own, purchased and watched all four seasons. The fourth season would rate a 4.5 if Amazon would allow 0.5 ratings simply because it left "Whitecaps" in limbo for a long wait until the 5th season. I think that Edie Falco's acting is some of the most dramatic and powerful I have ever seen, esp. in "Whitecaps" . I am proud to say that I am a new Soprano's Fan and look forward to the next season(s), albiet I hope they are not spaced so far apart. DCB
Rating: Summary: another sell-out Review: david chase said there would only be 3 seasons of the sopranos. HBO tossed a truck load of money at him and changed his mind. does it show? you bet. this is atrocious TV. the episodes are pointless and degrading to the brilliance that the show aspired to. unfortunately, too many people go ahead and defend something that was once great without looking at it objectively. empires fall, people, and the sopranos have fallen. the characters, situations, concepts, story-lines and subplots are misguided, come from nowhere, go nowhere and are dull. episodes like the columbus day parade episode are a travesty. have they really run out of ideas in only three seasons? as much as i hate low-brow manipulation, 24 is putting the sopranos to shame. they should have quit while they were ahead and PLEASE STOP PRODUCING GARBAGE JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE IS PAYING YOU MILLIONS FOR IT! oh, the acting is still brilliant - from all of them - they just have nothing decent to work with.
Rating: Summary: Sopranos Rule Review: Tony and the rest of his peeps offer the greates entertainment value on the market, on or off television. And the "New Sex Now" dvd offers unparalleled value as instructional enligtenment for adults.
Rating: Summary: The Sopranos Gets 2 Thumbs Up Review: So many hidden clues were pointed out and mentioned in this finely written season of The Sopranos. This season was all about the relationships within families. It showed the beginning of what is going to be the end. The acting is so perfect, the actors and actresses really fit the glove of the characters. The Sopranos isn't just about organized crime, it's about modern families and how they stick together through thick and thin. When you watch The Sopranos, every sentence has a clue of what is to come. This would be my 2nd favorite season after the 2nd season. David Chase really stepped up to his word, and deserves credit, and so does the cast along the writers. What makes this season so nicely arranged, is it left the viewers wondering of what is to come. So many problems are left unsolved. That is what The Sopranos are all about. You never really expect who's next to sleep with the fishes. This season really brought up the images of the characters that were not really in the action last season. With Adriana being the rat, this season, really made the show more interesting, it kind of reminded me of those old days when Big Pussy was around. With Furio having feelings for Carmela, really polished the image of Sopranos. Junior got off the trial really hyped up the relationship between the family. Johnny Sack conspires to cap Carmine. So many things have left us wondering. Even if Tony does bad things in his life, he's still a family man. He loves his wife. The show lets the viewer realize that these kinds of situations happen in real life. If youre a Sopranos fanatic, you will find many clues this season. I would suggest every individual with a taste in organized crime to get this DVD. The Sopranos combine humor, romance, crime, and action into one. This season gets 2 thumbs up!!!
Rating: Summary: Don't Forget About It!!! Review: The Sopranos are a crowning achievement for HBO, David Chase and the hundreds of super talented people who have put their time and artistic skills into the production of this HBO masterpiece. It is unfortunate that HBO shows like Six Feet Under, Sex in the City, Curb your Enthusiasm, and Carnivale will eventually wind up on the trash heap, while the Sopranos continue their relentless march into HBO television history!! Having lived in New Jersey for 52 years, I can relate to the people, language, humor, sadness, and ruined lives that come from living in such a turbulant and diverse state. Nonetheless, as much as I find the Sopranos violent, ruthless, and unpredictable, I am drawn to the world they live in. After watching four years of the Sopranos, it is easy to see why Tony Soprano, Big Pussy, and Silvio Dante make fun of the Godfather movie. The intense reality of the Sopranos easily eclipses past gangster and mafia movies. Even James Cagney would have loved the Sopranos!! Within most everyone you will find some Tony Soprano. He does what most of us only wish we could do in an out of control society. The fine line between fantasy and reality can and sometimes becomes blurred. The veracity of the Sopranos series, it's diverse characters, forceful episodes, and unpredictability, draw you into a world unlike any you could ever imagine. The Sopranos do not need hyping by me or anyone else. James Gandolphini, Edie Falco, Stephen Van Zant, Tony Serico, Michael Imperioli, and everyone in the cast are beyond excellent. Some scenes are difficult to watch, others bear watching over and over again. For HBO, the actors, and the people of New Jersey, the Sopranos fit like a glove. Simply stated, "Don't forget about it"!!
