Rating: Summary: GREAT SHOW.....BAD DVD Review: While Forever Knight is a fantastic show, this is one of the worst, if not THE worst TV DVD set I have ever seen. Columbia Tri-Star did NOTHING to clean the image of the film up. I own seasons 1-4 of MASH on DVD, and let me tell you that there was no other TV show that had such poor film quality. Well guess what...the MASH DVDs are beautiful, so TV show picture quality CAN BE improved. My VHS taped recordings off of Sci Fi channel are way better than this DVD set. Yes, that's how bad the picture quality is. Looking for Forever Knight extras? Don't look here. Columbia-Tri Star didn't include a SINGLE EXTRA feature. Quite frankly, if season 2 and 3 are this poorly done, count me out. I don't want them. A true shame this is. This is probably one of the finest, most under-appreciated TV shows of the 1990's. A true shame that the folks at Columbia Tri Star are too ignorant to do a DVD set right.
Rating: Summary: overall, 1 for the packaging but 5 for the series Review: Will I be buying the next two - absolutely! Would I be willing to pay more for a better product - absolutely! Will I let other FK fans know about the DVDs - already have, with cautions. I fell in love with Forever Knight the first time I saw it on late night TV. I have been anxiously waiting for the show to come out on DVD,and pre-ordered as soon as I found that it was finally going to be released. Within the first 30 minutes my excitement was tinged with disappointment...there are missing scenes from the pilot episode, there are no extras, interviews, etc. C'mon guys why aren't all the eps at least the full Canadian version (European would be even better!) Why no extras? All the actors, producers, directors and writers are still around would getting some interviews be that difficult? Outtakes have to exist why not include them? As for the ads for other products that are being presented as extras - didn't watch and not going to watch - if it doesn't include some of the FK cast don't even bother to put it into the next two.
Rating: Summary: Yes, I'm a bit of a fangirl. Review: But don't hold that against me, OK? First, my review of the series: It's cheesy, it's awful, it's so very very early 90's. It's got a broody angelic vampire who just wants to see a sunrise again... Oh, wait, that's on TV today too.... Yes, it's that bad. And I love it. It's got humor, of the we-know-something-you don't know variety, which I happen to like. It's also got moments of grace, (small) moments of stunning acting that surprise and silence and make you thoughtful. I think it's because many were small time actors and actresses who got this one chance, and made it count for something. I'm not talking the stars of course, but the bit parts in each show. They frequently raise it above your usual junky Hollywood crap. This show was low-budget (you can tell from the repeated filler scenes) and low on the radar of Hollywood; I'm grateful it came out on DVD at all. But that which makes it cheesy, campy and dreadful also frees it to be interesting and good, to value acting and drama (ok, so some giggles are due here, but get over it) over special effects (which quite frankly are gawd-awful). Now, the DVD: if it's true that it's edited then I'm deeply disapointed, and somewhat hurt; but not necessarily surprised. There were no extras, at all; you get nothing but the episodes and be happy that there's even a menu to pick them from. But that's sort of to be expected. Oh, well. The picture quality is as grainy as the TV show was. No surprises there, it was probably filmed that way. I don't mind... the sound quality wasn't bad. I'm glad I bought it and if they do come out with another set that has the longer versions I'll get it and give this set to someone else.
Rating: Summary: Well worth the wait Review: One of my greatest fears has been put to rest: That my VHS tapes would wear out before FK would see itself on DVD. One of the most amazing character-driven programs that I have ever had the pleasure to watch. I have finished watching all five discs, and I felt that it was money and time well spent. I anxiously look forward to Parts 2 and 3. A must-have for any DVD library.
Rating: Summary: BEWARE!!! Edited CBS TV Rip Off---Not the full show!!!! Review: I was expecting to see the full, unedited version. Instead, I saw the edited CBS TV version, complete with crimetime after prime time logos, and cbs TV stereo emblems superimposed over the episode. Dark Knight was heavily edited, I have a more complete version that I taped off of the Sci-Fi channel. The scene where Nick arrives at the museum and walks up stairs with the cop, sees the suit of armor with the cross and knows Don is there is cut, Nick explaining to Nat about the jade cup in his apartment is gone, Nick with the curator talking about the suit of armor having the wrong bolt-can't relieve himself-cut, the curator leafing through the Alton Kanal book and photo copying Nicks photo is missing the part with Don and Nick in the hospital trying to see the records of blood donors and Nick returning to his Caddy gone, scene after scene is gone. What a let down after wanting the series to be released for so long..and we have a shorter version that what the Sci-Fi channel aired. This is like paying the pizza delivery guy, sitting down to eat your pizza, opening the box, and finding two slices missing. Well I paid for the ENTIRE Forever Knight pie, and I want my missing slices. This is a RIP-OFF!!!!! No extras included, unless you count the three commercials for different vampire movies that they want to sell you on DVD as extras. Are those movies edited versions also??????? THIS IS A RIP-OFF!!!!
Rating: Summary: Mixed feelings.... Review: I have been a fan of the vampire genre my whole life. There have been many films and television shows that have focused on that very subject. However, Forever Knight is one of the best overall that I have ever seen. The storyline could not have been better. Nick Knight ( Geraint Wyn Davies) is a vampire who has lived for almost 800 years. However, he has always wished that he could become mortal again. To repay his debt to society, he works as a homicide detective for the Toronto Metropolitan Police. While he secretly uses his vampire abilities to solve the city's most difficult cases with his smart-mouthed and witty partner Don Schanke ( John Kapelos), he attempts to find a cure for his case of vampirism with his best friend and fellow medical pathologist Natalie Lambert (Catherine Disher). The different cases, the outstanding vampire effects, and the superb acting from Davies, Kapelos, and Disher really make Forever Knight one of the best television shows that I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Every episode manages to offer moments of outstanding action, humor, and horror. Now if this review was only for the show itself, I would give it 5 stars hands down. But this review is also for the DVD set as well. That is the reason why I can only offer a 3 star rating. While it is nice to have all the episodes for season 1 together in one collection, the DVD set is seriously lacking in some areas. First of all, the picture quality of the episodes is extremely average and even grainy at times. The transfer of the episodes could have been much better. Secondly, the very first episode "Dark Knight PT 1" has scenes missing from it. When you purchase the DVD of anything, you are supposed to have access to the best version available. This is simply not the case. There is also NO EXTRAS at all. I would have enjoyed a behind the scenes look into the show as well as interviews with the cast members. However, that is not to say that the DVD set does not have its good points as well. With the acception of the very first episode, the rest of the episodes offer all the original footage shown in the U.S., and then some with the Canadian footage added in. The sound quality is also very good. I just wish that if Columbia went all out with giving us the best versions of the episodes, why not do it for the first episode as well? Overall, this DVD set is a must have for fans of the vampire genre and obviously fans of the show. However, the buyers need to look out for poor picture quality, a serious lack of extras, and missing scenes from the first episode.
Rating: Summary: Thanks for the release!!! Review: Forever Knight is a great series and a must for any vampire fan. With one exception, the episodes included in this first season set are longer versions with scenes not often aired in the US. I give it 4 stars rather than 5 due to the lack of extras often found in bo sets and not having full versions for all episodes. However, I am still very pleased to have this set, and will be at the front of the line for seasons 2 and 3 when they are released!
Rating: Summary: FK DVD Delivers Review: I just got my copy of the Forever Knight DVD and have just finished viewing the first two disks. Overall picture quality and DVD presentation was top notch and I loved the fact that they released the Canadian cut, which had all the missing and extended scenes never seen in the American cut. The only real drawback was that they did cut out one of the scenes in the first episode, where Nick tells Alyce that the armor wsa pout on wrong, though I found this to be only a minor inconvenience. This DVD set is a must for any die hard FK fan or anyone even remotely interested in vampires.
Rating: Summary: Restored scenes add to humor and drama Review: A treat for U.S. viewers is the inclusion of the "Canadian" material, restoring scenes that add to the wit, humor and drama of "Forever Knight." Somewhere, the producer, writers and directors are surely rejoicing to see their work as they meant it to appear originally and, like the rest of us, eagerly await the appearance of the 2nd season in full form.
Rating: Summary: i've been a Forever Knight fan for years Review: I'm so thrilled that the long awaited FK dvds are finally available to buy. Now, if they just come out with the other 2 seasons on dvd i'll be set for life :)
