Summary: anyone else having quality control issues?
Review: well, i won't bugger about with "missing pilot" problems, or any of the drivel....but is anyone having trouble with accessing the individual commentaries, or log lady intros? once i get to the episode special features menu, it automatically plays the episode, without me being able to select anything...i've never had this issue with any disc before, and i also noted the scratched disc four problem that the bloke below had ( no white goo, though). if anyone else has this problem, let me know.
THAT ASIDE....THESE DISCS ARE SIMPLY FREAKING DIVINE!!!! five doughnuts up!!!! the score in dts adds so much emotional resonance ( not that any was lacking....until now!), i am simply amazed at the beauty that is this show....cannot wait for the season 2's...

Summary: Two comments...
Review: (1) The brilliant 2-hour pilot for the series is not included in this box. For those _unfamiliar_ with the series, the absence of the pilot renders the box practically unusable as TP is probably the most intricately interconnected TV series ever. There are things in the pilot which become important only in the second season! Fortunately, it is easily fixed: the pilot is available on the Internet as an import DVD. Buy it (it's cheap) and watch the pilot first. (2) Picture quality of this set is great, almost no complaints (except the color balance of a portion of the opening credits sequence is wrong - the waterfalls and the water are brown and it should be sepia/gold). But something is odd about the audio mix: the music is much quieter than in the original TV broadcasts and the dialogue and the effects are louder. The original series was simply constantly swimming in music, that was part of its feel, here the music is simply like any traditional accompaniment. Example: Big Ed enters Norma's diner and they have a chat about Nadine's drape runners. The music in the diner should be really loud, not a mere background as it is in this set. Or Jerry Horne's entrance near the beginning of episode 2: it used to be accompanied by this really nice percussion - here it is subdued and easy to miss entirely. Scenes with Jerry, Ben, and Blackie feel almost like watching raw footage: all the incidental noises and squeaks are loud but the music is quiet. I still give it 5 stars, my griping here is really less important than it seems. The owls OTOH are more important than they seem. :-)

Summary: Why only 7 Episodes?
Review: As a great fan of TWIN PEAKS, I was (at first)happy to hear
it was finally being released on DVD. That was until I heard
only 7 episodes will be released!!!!
I could live without the pilot( that is available on HK DVD),
but only part of the series is almost criminal. Sure, sooner or later the whole series will be available, but why??
ARTISAN Ent. should be ashamed. I will wait for a Box set; rumors are that Paramount in Germany will release this as a Box set(maybe with an English language track?).
Anyway, if ARTISAN would have released this as a set, I would have bought it - at any price, by the way( so their's no financial reason not to release it as a set).

Review: Not only am I returning this incomplete "complete" first season because it doesn't have the pilot episode, but also because it doesn't say anything about the missing episode on the packaging until you have it home and open it. And even then you don't know for certain that it's incomplete until you actually start the first disc and see footage from a previous episode that you don't even have. $50 for fraud! Nice try Artisan, I guess Blair Witch 2 didn't make enough money.

Summary: Let's Start From Somewhere Near The Beginning...
Review: As a long-time fan of Twin Peaks I could hardly wait to own the series on DVD...until I *bought* the DVD. As a result I must add my voice to the myriad other complaints in the same vein and ask, what's the point? Why bother putting this outstanding series in a nice new expensive package - and still, after all this time, not include the pilot episode?
If you've never seen Twin Peaks (or even if you *have* seen it) there's something seriously wrong with starting from episode two, primarily that you're missing out on the entire first two hours or so which lay the groundwork for the rest of the series. By excluding the pilot I fail to see how this can be acurately labelled as 'The Complete First Season.'
Save your money, and your time, and wait until someone can be troubled to release a truly 'complete' version...

Review: Okay, perhaps it's not fair for me to write a review for Twin Peaks as I have not yet seen it, so for all those seasoned veterans of Twin Peaks, please don't jump on my back. My one star review is for the DVD itself, not the content.I have heard so many great things about Twin Peaks, but couldn't find anywhere to rent these DVD's (Blockbuster isn't carrying them, meaning most places probably aren't), so I decided to take a gamble and buy the set. I rushed home to start watching them, clicked 'play episode 1', and the first things I hear is "Previously on Twin Peaks...". Previously? Isn't this the beginning? So I started calling people to figure out what was going on, and no one could help me. The best thing we could come up with was that there was maybe a movie or something I would need to rent that would start to explain things. Then I get online today and start trying to figure out how to see where Twin Peaks starts, and I am horrified to find out that the pilot IS NOT INCLUDED! Are you joking? I am dying to hear who thought it would be a bad idea to let people know how the show started. I definitely wouldn't have bought this DVD set had I known that it wouldn't actually take me back to the beginning of the show. I'm new to this and need to see where everything started. I am going to try to march on through the series and not let this deter me, but it's pretty disappointing when a studio has done such a bad job on a DVD set that I don't want to keep watching...especially when I haven't even started watching!

Review: As long as we have been waiting for this series to come out on DVD, it is a rip-off for them not to have included the two hour pilot in the four DVD set. What do they need FOUR DVDs for for just 7 episodes plus some fluff? Whis is here is great... but Two Stars only for leaving out the pilot.

Summary: Why did they spoil it?
Review: Twin Peaks is among my favorite TV shows of all time. It's quirky characters, slow languid pacing and mixture of innocence and sething evil are intoxicating to me. It's a true pleasure to finally have the first season on DVD. NEW VIEWERS OF TWIN PEAKS BEWARE! Twin Peaks is a mystery and some of it's secrets are revealed in a few of the episodes directors commentaries as well as the supplemental material on disc 7. If you want a completely unspoiled Peaks experience, these sections should not be watched until the ENTIRE run of the show has been seen (this includes season 2). Not that spoilers are rampant, they're not. But every now and then a slip up reveals something that shouldn't be known to new viewers. What's revealed? Well the most egregious of all is Laura Palmer's killer. This is no problem for long time Peaks Freaks, but why they'd want to ruin the experience for new viewers is beyond me. Watch out! The series is split into 4 discs (2 shows per disc with the fouth holding episode 7 and bonus material). The picture and sound are the best I've ever seen them for Twin Peaks. The only time the picture is lacking is for the Log Lady introductions which look terribly fuzzy and hazy. Not that it matters much to me, as I never liked those segements anyway and you have option of watching them or not. The menu system is beautiful and fairly easy to navigate. My only qualm is that the text is a bit small even on my 36" TV. There is a terrific Twin Peaks family tree type thing on disc 7 that shows you each characters relationships to others and allows you to view the actors biography, a taped interview and their other credits. It's a terrific resource! The Twin Peaks pilot has been caught up in legal battles for many years and as such it's not included in this set. It's a damn shame, but you can find foreign copies of it (in english) on eBay. This set makes up for it's omission with a page in the booklet devoted to important characters indtrodced in the pilot as well as another page summarizing the plot. Not as good as having the pilot included, but certainly every effort to make up for it was made. This a "must buy" set for Peaks fans and the best presentation the show has ever had. I'll be watching this many times over for many years to come. I only wish the mystery wasn't spoiled for new viewers in some of the supplemental materials. Here's hoping the second season and a US release of the original pilot are coming soon!
