Summary: The Sylvania DVR90VE is a good product for the price.
Review: The Sylvania DVR90VE does everything I wanted it to do. I wanted to copy my old VHS tapes to DVD. The only limitation was that I had to use DVD-R & DVD-RW (4X speed) discs. No problem! The quality is good...better than expected. I have copied (dubbed) about 60 movies to DVD-R 4X discs in the eight weeks since I bought the unit. I've also copied many TV programs to DVD-RW discs and even tried out the dubbing from DVD-RW to a VHS tape...which worked well too.

I placed the unit in our guess room connected to its own TV. This makes it easy to record and review without interfering with family scheduled TV programs. And since I have an older DVD player that does accept DVD-RW, I usually tape my temporary TV programs to VHS for my equally older VHS player in our family room.

The only problem I see is that DVD-R & DVD-RW 4X speed discs are not as available as DVD+R & DVD+RW discs (at various speeds). But as long as I can buy them (at least online) I'll continue to be happy with this recorder/player.

Summary: Super Value
Review: This was one where I was hoping for the best but a bit dubious of what I might end up with at this price. As it turns out I was very pleasantly surprised. Easy to use with clear instructions, I was dubbing home videos to dvd 15-20 minutes out of the box. Easy hook up with digital/HD cable involved. High quality DVD picture, both playing and recording (dubbing from VCR or recording from TV). VCR portion does a nice job too. The copies and recordings I have made using DVD-R media work perfectly on 3 different DVD players in my house (each a different brand at a different price point bought at different times), so compatability doesn't seem to be an issue. I would have to say that the quality I got was much more than I expected for the money.

Summary: Recording DVD's is awesome
Review: Very good DVD recording ability. I've been recording 3 movies to each DVD-RW, and they play back in excellent quality. I have dubbed one VHS to DVD, and I'd say the quality was just 'good', but still probably what I expected. I did learn after my purchase that there are DVD-RW discs, and DVD+RW discs. This will not work with a DVD+RW, so depending on the future of DVD will determine whether this recorder is right for you. I have just accepted I'm going to live in a DVD-RW world, so as long as it's supported, this is an excellent product.

Summary: RETURNED TO AMAZON-TERRIBLE DVR
Review: Who could possibly give this machine a good review? My boyfriend spent an hour trying to get it to work and then ended up on hold forever with customer service before they told him he needed to use 4X DVDs even though it wasn't in the manual. We bought the 4X and even they didn't work. What a complete waste of time. Amazon should write this one off their list of acceptable DVRs to sell. It's being returned to Amazon tomorrow.
