Review: I am not a Judy Garland fan per se. I bought this in July and finally got to watch it. I immediately fell in love with it. It has the charm of the old west, and you will Angela Landsbury in a way we never have I am 45 so the closest thing I saw her in is murder she wrote. Angela has a "Bad girl" role here as a saloon girl. The Harvey Girls arrive in town and open up shop next to The local Saloon. A war of such arises between good and evil. But as time is passes the walls begins breaking down. Great musical numbers, rootin tootin cowboys, and old west fun! Highly recommended to add to your video libary, I was going to sell mine but after watching it I am keeping it.

Summary: Better Than I Expected
Review: I cam across this movie by chance. I never had an interest in watching it as I am not a Garland fan. I was channel surfing and came accross the (It's A Great Big World) number. I was enchanted by Virgina O'Brien. This film is what made me a Virgina fan. Her musical numbers are superb. (Wild, Wild West) is definatly a stand out. Virgina was pregnant during the filming of this movie and alot of her scenes had to be cut.An unfortunate circumstance but I would of enjoyed this movie even with out Virgina. It is fairly entertaining.

Review: I just picked up my copy on DVD today. Being a fan of Judy Garland, I could not pass this up. Athough not one her "best" musicals, it is very entertaining and fun. I think it is a very cute movie. Angela Landsbury is a knock-out in this film. Judy Garland also looks beautiful.For the DVD copy itself- amazing. The transfer is awesome. The colors are SO bright, and the picture is SO amazingly clear that in one scene where Judy and John Hodiak are sitting together in the mountains you can actually see either a pimple or a beauty mark on Judys cheek that they tried to cover with makeup!!! The transfer of this film is amazing. Deleted musical numbers, trailer,commentry- its all here!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to WB for putting this out- lets hope they release Meet Me In St Louis, The Pirate, Summer Stock, Easter Parade and Presenting Lily Mars as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Review: I ordered The Harvey Girls because my grandmother was one of the original Harvey Girls back in the late 1800s--in fact, that's how she met my grandfather (he worked on the railroad). I didn't know it was such an enjoyable musical. The music is fantastic, and Judy Garland is wonderful.

Summary: One of Judy Garland and MGM's best musicals ever!
Review: I originally saw this lush technicolor musical on a Sunday afternoon (when I was in high school) wedged between commercials for detergents, paper towels, and various other household products. Despite the film being interrupted with these ads and being shown on a small tv screen, I was captivated by Judy Garland's beauty, sincerity, power to communicate as an artist, and her incomparable talent to act, sing, dance, and to charm. This film does not have the same status as Meet Me in St. Louis or The Pirate or A Star is Born, but it is one of her best performances presented with a calmness and freshness that puts you, the viewer, at ease. Her character Susan Bradley is one of her best portrayals. She is funny, courageous, witty, determined, and strong. Like Esther Smith in Meet Me in St. Louis or Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz or Lily Mars in Presenting Lily Mars, Susan Bradley is a winner, the kind of woman you respect and admire, especially considering the time period the film was set in. This dvd release is a true gift to those of us who are not only Judy Garland fans, but to anyone who has ever enjoyed the film musical. I won't rehash all the details found in other reviews of Amazon customers about the dvd, but I will add that the color transfer is simply awesome. It DOES look like the film was shot recently, not way back in 1945. The deleted musical numbers and the recording sessions for the songs is an extreme necessity for any Garland fan. I am really sorry they cut "My Intuition" since it's the only time Garland and John Hodiak sang together in the film, but I can understand why they cut "March of the Doagies." Don't get me wrong: I like it, but it almost looks a chase for Frankenstein's monster with Judy ending up on a stake being burned alive! Now here's some trivia no one in their review has mentioned. Originally the film was going to be made as a drama for Lana Turner, but MGM, due to Rodgers and Hammerstein's success with "Oklahoma!", decided to turn it into a musical for their leading musical star. Originally, the story of the Harvey girls was based on book called The Harvey Girls by Samuel Hopkins Adams published in 1942. Another piece of trivia was that the lovely Cyd Charisse was dubbed in this film, but one would never notice since the dubber really captured her vocal quality and essence. Without hesitation, this dvd release is an awesome addition to any collection. You won't be disappointed! Now we can await the arrival of other Judy Garland classic musicals for future releases. Who knows what other "undiscovered goodies" await us from the vaults of MGM?

Review: I watched this movie thinking it was going to be really 'lame'. After ten minutes I knew I was wrong! This was a very cute movie about a bunch a of waitresses who have to surpass the torment of the local "entertainment". A definite must see! A great story and wonderful music.

Review: I wouldn't say that this was Judy Garland's best film, but it was always one of my favorites. It's about a girl that meets a man through one of those order-a-bride things. She's enchanted by the man's letters, so she packs up her stuff and moves out west to marry him. When she gets there though, she realizes that the man who really wrote the letters did it as a joke, so she becomes a Harvey Girl(a waitress at a high class inn) just to spite him. Of course the two fall in love. Don't they always.

Summary: Judy, Judy, Judy!!!!
Review: If big Hollywood musicals are your favorite kind of movie, then this one is a good one to add to your collection. The Harvey Girls is one of those kick-up-your-heels pictures so popular in the fories when the main idea was to entertain and make the public forget that there was a war going on. Judy Garland, as always, is fabulous in this movie--so easy on the eyes and a joy to listen to. The "Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" is the movie's biggest number with lots of people all over the place, singing and dancing their hearts out. It's certainly a showstopper and sets the stage for the excitement the Harvey girls must feel on their way to a wild, untamed country. Ray Bolger is fun to watch with his dancing talents and Angela Landbury is as cute and sexy as she can be with those big, round eyes of hers. Watch for Cyd Charisse who makes her musical debut as a young Harvey girl who falls in love with a saloon pianist. Judy's leading man, however, is very dull and there really is no chemistry between the two. There is not much of a storyline but the great musical numbers are what really make this a great film.

Review: If you come right down to it the script is quite silly! It doesnt matter. A Fine cast and the ultimate talent of Judy Garalnd prevails here. If all the words to describe Ms. Garland's talent were collected...one would need a 1,000,000,000 Gig Hard Drive.Imagine going into a movie house in the 40,s seeing films like this with the incomparable Judy ..what an experience. !!
Her star shined so brightly ! Folks leaving a theater after a film like this might just feel a little better about ..something..and for that ( which is enough) thanks are given. Looking back we know what a toll it took on this rather frail person... For " The Harvey Girls" western expansion of the railroad takes on a new meaning. Any film that has Marjorie Main and Kenny Baker has to be at least quirky. !!Watch for a stunning Cyd Charrise!!

Summary: All Aboard For A Rip-Roaring Good Time
Review: In the 1930's Judy Garland established herself as a box office dynamo. But it is with a string of phenomenal Technicolor musicals in the 1940's that she really cemented her place in the annals of film history. One of her best efforts of this decade is "The Harvey Girls" in which Judy plays Susan Bradley, a mail order bride who becomes a waitress in a restaurant in the wild west town of Sandrock. The film features the Oscar-winning song, "On The Atcheson Topeka & The Santa Fe" and is littered throughout with moments that warm the heart and fill the ear.
Warner Home Video has done this film proud with a stunning digital transfer that sparkles. Color fidelity is magnificent with a vibrance and clarity that amazes. The film's elements and soundtrack have been remastered and reflect Warner's committment to their classic film library. Also included as suppliments are two different versions of a song cut from the final version of the film, "March of the Doagies" that must have cost MGM a bundle to shoot. It is one of Hollywood's small tragedies that this musical number, in either version, wasn't seen by audiences for nearly sixty years. Thankfully, we have it back where it belongs at last. Get this disc and get ready for a rip-roaring good time.
