Review: After the absolute masterpiece that Costner directed (Dances with Wolves) I just had to see this movie. And I am very glad I did. The story was very good with an outstanding acting job by Robert Duvall that will for sure get him an ocsar nomination for best supporting actor. It is the classic western with your favorite actors. You get into the characters and understand their emotions and are able to truly know them. A very good film that is definately worth investing your movie going money into.

Summary: gorgeous, epic, thought-provoking, well-acted, & intelligent
Review: This is the first real smart and beautifully made movie I've seen this summer, better than the light comedy of "Pirates of the Caribbean", and more applicable to reality than "28 Days". It touches upon the most basic and beloved aspects of American culture and politics, namely property ownership and land acquisition. It reaches into those ideologies and never ceases to question how much we take for granted as a country and as a people. It is a beautifully done film- kudos to Costner. Annette Benning is a standout.

Review: Costner will probably be bad, but hopefully Duvall can carry most of the weight on his shoulders? We know the movie's plot, someone kills Kevin Costner's friend and he seeks revenge. Yes, I know it sounds shallow... maybe there's a twist or something.
Never the less, go see this movie!

Review: The guy who said that there are no gunshots in this film until the closing scenes is incorrect. A gunshot is fired in a bar, far before the end of the movie. The cinematography is amazing, and I really like the title. Kevin Costner is an underrated director just as much as he is an underrated actor.

Review: This work is simply extraordinary. Forget about Dance with wolves!.
This film is light years ahead that one. Costner has grown up as film maker and human being : he absorbed the mythological mood and epic spirit , two fundamentals elements of the western mood.
He followed the lines of the mythological narrative.
Four men : three generations : one man who still 's a kid . a rescued teenager (Button) from Texas , a middle aged man Charlie (Costner) and finally the boss Boss Spearman (a coincidence in the meaning of his name?) the wise but hard fighter Robert Duvall land in nowhere . They have no comittment with the outer world . They live outdoors and are gipsy cowboys . They are a little family with that charming pet.
Suddenly , the evil Baxter and his gunfighters will emerge , true villains and obviously a clear pattern western mob . They have a town under his own rules , even the marschall.
The spark light that will originate the expected duel will appear : the feeling of revenge will permeate the viewer.
In this sense the film is a great tribute to The Seven Samurais , The magnificent seven and Ride the high country .
The film has a superb photography ; the shots are unforgettable , the mountains , the valley , the river are an amazing background where the facts and other little bits will support the dramatis personae.
Duvall that cosmical actor is a spiritual guide for Costner , he's his father in the real sense of the word.
They establish a magical rapport in the movie : the inner values about the freedom , the private property and the sense of not being under the orders of no one , will be the starting point for this magnificent western.
Duvall is extarordinary expressive. His role is well written , he's bitter and funny with this sense of intelligent cynism. Costner is credible in his role , and the character is a mix of several ancient roles there's some of Elloit Ness : warning by instance the first succesful shot of the duel and plese tell me : Don't you remember the sequence in the untouchables when Elliot Ness pushes from the top of the building to the hated white dressed mob villain ? .
The performance of Anette Bening (Sue) is fabulous . She's an outstanding actress , and gives an extraordinary accent to a demanding role . Her inner mood , the sensuality she raises only with her facial and corporal language are overwhelming.
Our kid (Button) wounded , makes the grade as a man in the duel.
And finally Percy (Michael Jeter)steals the show as the friendly fellow on the town.
The script in its dramatic peak is first rate : it's true that there's a hidden tribute to High Noon , but this one wins in dramatism. Excelent shots , the camera is perfect.
Costner has made his masterpiece.
If I could give this movie one thousand stars I would do it!
A superb triumph and one of the three best films made in USA in 2003.

Summary: Solid addition the to Western genre'
Review: "Open Range" directed by Kevin Costner is a fine addition to the Western genre' which includes such classics as "Unforgiven", "Silverado", and the great Howard Hawks westerns of the '60s and early '70s starring John Wayne. Costner, who also stars in the film with Robert Duvall and Annette Bening, takes his time setting the stage for the plot, but does so effectively. Some viewers might be put off by the pace of the film, but it does move steadily toward the ultimate (and expected) climax. It's probably his best directorial effort since "Dances With Wolves".Costner (Charlie) and Duvall (Boss) and company are "open rangers" - cattlemen who move their stock across the country to stockyards stopping occasionally for them to graze in the wide open spaces of the West. When the herd is slowed by bad weather, Boss sends his cook into the nearest town to re-stock their supplies. The cook is jailed for starting trouble and when Boss and Charlie travel into town to find him, they are confronted by the local cattle baron (Michael Gambon) who tells them "get their cattle and cook out off HIS land and move along". For reasons of principle and revenge because of the beating that the cook received in town, Boss and Charlie decide to make a stand. Without going into a lot of plot revealing details, let me just say that the viewer can pretty much gather at this point in the movie where this film is headed. My only criticisms of the film are: 1) the romantic spark that develops between Charlie and Sue (Annette Bening) is not really a necessity to a pretty good story that's being developed up to that point and, 2) it's never really developed where Boss and Charlie are headed and why - and 3) while, great if you have surround sound, the incessant rain and thunderstorms make the film somewhat depressing. None of these criticisms should detract the reader of this review to go out and either rent of buy this DVD. There are too many superlatives regarding this film to do that. Robert Duvall is simply outstanding (in his easy manner and unerstated way of acting) as Boss. Costner and Bening are also very good but Duvall steals the show! The sound quality, especially the realistic gunfire sound effects and film score are wonderful aspects of the film. The cinematography of the beautiful "open range" land is unbelievably crisp and pure. The widescreen version of the film really enhances the beauty of the Big Sky country! RECOMMENDED FOR ALL FANS OF THE WESTERN!

Summary: Open Up To A Modern Western
Review: Kevin Costner has brought the simplicity of an old western movie into a new age and done a fantastic job, both as an actor and as director. The storyline for this film is a bit bland and basic but the intensity of acting and the scenery make up for the lack of substance in the story. "Open Range" takes you into a real western setting where one could see for miles and miles only what God made and be humbled by it. The gunfight is fantastic and so much more than any found in the good old western movies. Robert Duvall is perfect as Boss, an old grubby cowboy with heart. Opposite Duvall you would think Costner would pale in comparision but he fits in almost as perfectly as a man with a mystery past. Annette Bening is subtle in her role, as a doctor's sister, but no less important to the film as Costner and Duvall. But the most impressive character in this film is by far the western scenery and the reality of nature's wrath out in the open range of 1882.

Review: This is a great story about good old fashioned American Ideals of right and wrong. Of course in a western there is ultimately one way to resolve differences. While the bad guy might be kind of one dimensional, Duval and Costner's characters are as good as westerns get. If you like westerns, you will be glad you watched this movie.

Summary: Tears of Joy! An Excellent Western!
Review: I am a huge fan of Western Movies. I have watched hundreds of Westerns in my short stay on earth; but this is one is definitely in the top ten greatest westerns. It has a briliant story line that keeps the viewer firmly grounded to his or her seat. A great feat for a western that is two hours or so long. The movie had some awsome and realistic shoot outs. And yes the momentous romance story in the 'background' showed the glories of romantic love in its full splendor. This western's name shall never ever leave my lips. It is westerns like this that makes one feel good to be alive. Bravo!
