Summary: Why is this film so good?
Review: I first saw this film some ten years ago on TV. I joined in when Tuco and Blondie were crossing the desert (Llano Estacado?) and I became instantaneously hooked. What a plot! What a chain of wild adventures! Since then I have been watching the video at least once a year and I have enjoyed time after time the many marvelous episodes. Take for instance the scene in the general store, where Tuco is 'buying" a revolver. Unsurpassed! This film is really innovative. Not like the traditional westerns, where a bunch of boy scouts are fighting the bad guys, but here a bunch of bad guys are fingting each other. Eastwood end and Van Cleef are acting very well, but Eli Wallach as Tuco is certainly stealing the show. This film is much better than the the other spaghetti westerns by Leone and even better than any other western so far!

Summary: The best Western ever??
Review: A rare film, that is thrid in a trilogy and yet far surpasses the two that went before. It's a superb and lengthy story of intrigue and deceit, that unlike, "Once Upon a Time in the West" matches Leone's unique operatic style with the actual story. Plot wise, we see Eastwood, Van Cleef, and Wallach double crossing each other over and over in the hunt for confederate gold that's hidden in a grave. The twist is that each man knows only a partial clue to the grave's where-abouts and must work with one of the others two to find it, culminating in one of the most memorable climaxes in movie history. Brilliant performances from the three leading players, biiter style and ironic, tongue-in-cheek humour from Leone, a meaty plot and script and one of the best music scores ever from Morricone, all combine to make one of the best Westerns of all time and one of my current 10 all time favourite movies.

Review: Simply put, this movie is the quintessential Spaghetti Western, and unarguably the best western ever made. It's a film all other westerns aspire to emmulate, but without fail, fall short. A reminder: get the widescreen version and see the director's true vision (and the standoff in the end has ten times the impact).

Review: This movie is simply amazing. You have three characters (good, bad, and ugly) searching for Confederate gold, sibling quarrels, amazing cinematography, great action........and oh yes, this is all set in the middle of the Civil War. The story moves along at a great pace and stays intriguing all the way through. The final scene with the three characters will send chills down your spine. Get this movie now!!!

Review: Second best Eastwood western, (Josey Wales is numero uno) but contains the all time trivia question to stump your friends with. "The gold was buried in a grave marked Unknown. What was the name on the grave next to it? Answer: Arch Stanton.

Summary: The best spaghetti western ever
Review: Everyone has a favorite western and this is mine. Leone really outdid himself with this gem. Eastwood and Van Cleef are back from their previous experience in For a few dollars more, but it's Eli Wallach who steals the show this time around. Sergio Leone's masterful blending of music and visuals have been unequalled, and this film proves it. Also it's letterboxed, the way it should be seen, and it includes an additional 15 minutes of footage (albeit in italian, but there are english sub-titles available). Leone completists beware though, as this DVD doesn't include all the scenes that were cut from the film. Still, a worthy treat for the eyes and ears.

Review: Western movies are my favourite. Though I have watched a lot I have found this movie to be fantastic, incredible and amazing as well. I have only watched in videos and now I am looking forward to watch it in theatre.

Summary: For those who don't like westerns
Review: One of the greatest. Eli Wallach is soooo memorable. And Lee Van Cleef is so much fun to hate.And don't listen to the guy who stated that this DVD sucks. It doesn't. MGM's transfer is fantastic. Sharp and colorful and dual-layered--you get all 161 minutes on one side. The audio isn't 5.1 but this is a 1966 film--deal with it!

Summary: A fun movie, the quintessential satire on THE WESTERN
Review: This is a highly entertaining film. I recall a blurb styling Leone's 3 Eastwood epics as "Westerns with the James Bond flavor"...Most of us thoroughly enjoy the 007 spectaculars and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is a film of this ilk. In my opinon the movie successfully satirizes what is best (Wild Bunch, Magnificent Seven, Tombstone, Long Riders, High Noon) and what is occasionally "overdone" (The John Wayne "epics", Shane, Invitation to a Gunfighter). Ennio Morricone's musical score is a nice guide to when the film is aiming for authentic moments and humorous, satirical "put-on's". What you have here is a "punk" film that is deconstructing the Western genre at the expense of the "good" (truths") such films contain. That is, an admiration of individual courage and heroism is bartered for glib one-liners and impossible gunplay. Enzo Barboni's "They Call Me Trinity" and E. Clutcher's inferior "Trinity Is Still My Name" are satires on these satires that make the idea of herosim an entertaining farce if not a (slightly) disturbing lie. "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is good, entertaing film-making about a mythical genre that The Deconstructionists these days deliberately trash. I don't believe this was Leone's intention at all, so his Spaghetti Westerns are fun. But they're not great, nor serious explorations. The best "part",perhaps, of the film is Eli Wallach's Tuco role. It is the funniest, most engaging and convincingly human. The meeting between him and his monastery ensconced priest brother is much more telling about who the good, bad and ugly might really be. This film is probably a classic and is recommended but not for reasons the movie usually is. If, for example, you want to see the best Eastwood outing, see "The Outlaw Josie Wales" not this last epic of "The Man with No Name."
