Summary: Is this a children's movie?
Review: This movie really threw me. By all appearances it should be an exciting film about getting back to nature, as well as an historical piece. Yet the dialogue, the acting, the directing, and the music all made it feel (to me at least) like a children's movie, something Disney would have made. But it isn't a children's movie, at least not one I'd ever show my children. This movie simply baffles me; there are such mature themes, but they are presented in an extremely simplistic way. What threw me most was the horrendous dialogue (especially considering that this is a John Milius script) and childish music. And while Robert Redford is not bad, he certainly is not at his best, and is surrounded by mediocre and poor actors... This movie takes a dramatic situation, a scenerio with great potential, and turns it into some mickey mouse story more in the spirit of Peter Pan. I give it 2 stars (instead of 1) because maybe it's a children's movie that I'm just mis-interpreting (and which is being grossly mis-represented by its box description). But if this is supposed to be a serious epic, well, try something else...

Summary: On my husband's list of classics...
Review: This was a gift for my husband when he got his new DVD. He has a list of classic movies that seems to be imprinted on the minds of all members of the male species. I can name several movies that all men absolutely have to sit down and watch if it comes on...this is one of them, along with most Clint Eastwood movies, Monty Python movies, the Three Stooges, and Steve McQueen in 'Bullitt'. There...have I got all of them guys?

I enjoy watching these older movies on DVDs because first, as a deaf person...most of these were not captioned way-back-when. SEcond, the sound and color and picture quality on DVDs is significantly better than on videos. But unlike the guys, seeing a movie once, is good enough for me. I'd rather read a book.

However, this is one of Robert Redford's best movies. The scenery is gorgeous and is familiar from Utah and Sundance (Redford's property in Provo Canyon). Definitely a worth-while purchase...

Summary: God! What an Epic!
Review: A sweeping tribute to an American legend. This one movie, barring all others, has made me a lifelong Redford fan. The beautiful shots of the "Rockies" (filmed in Utah) lend an unescapable sense of realism and believablility. The hard and calloused characters Jeremiah meets throughout this movie are just as credible. What a story! What an adventure! Get swept up in this one!

Summary: An Exceptional Character Study
Review: Robert Redford is Jeremiah Johnson. A man who wanted to live away from crowds for his own internal reasons. The first problem he faced was the fact that he trekked into the mountains with no idea how to survive and might well have died his first winter had he not been befriended by ghe grizzled old mountain man played by Will Greer. He learns all he needs to know from this old grizzly hunter and comes to find peace and solitude in the mountains.

But as things sometimes do, they turn complicated, just like down in the flatlands. Johnson marries a sqaw and takes responsibility for a boy from a ravaged family. Johnson does his best to make good decisions and life an upstanding life. He learns to live with trappers and indians. He leads a life saving expidition to help a wagon train that has been snowed in and crosses indian burial land. In response the Indians take their revenge on his home while he is not there.

He is destined to roam the hills alone from this point on, fighting every Indian he sees. And he lives out his days in this respect, the longer he lasts the larger his legend grows.

A very underrated movie and one of the many top notch films that Redford has performed in. If you like Redford or you like westerns this is a fine choice and you will not be let down.

Summary: Magnificent Portrayal of Rugged America
Review: Jeremiah Johnson is quite possibly the most underrated film of all time. Unless you remember when it initially came out you may have never even heard of it. Robert Redford wonderfully portrays the hard scrabble life of a mountain man. I figured a film focused around one guy living way up in the mountains would be boring but he has all types of adventures with nature, bears, mountain men, Indians and settler. Visually stunning and highly spriritual, Jeremiah Johnson hearkens back to the original character of America and the men and women who settled it. The Indians are often the agressors, yet they still maintain their dignity in this film, protecting the land that is theirs. Oddly enough you still feel sympathy for Jeremiah, who initially tries to live peaceably with the Indians before white colonizers ruin everything for him. This is truly a grand film, a must see! I would give it four stars but a few aspects seem dated, such as the soundtrack, clearly early 70s!

Summary: Quietly Breathtaking Story of Personal Fortitude
Review: Robert Redford plays Jeremiah Johnson, a man who wants to show himself that he has what it takes to make it as a trapper in the Wild West. Wil Geer plays a semi-hermit who ends up mentoring Redford. Along the way, Jeremiah faces not only the challenges of an incredibly rugged and beautiful frontier, but also the lawlessness and brutality of rival trappers who don't want competition. The scenery is gorgeous and stunning. I think this might be the least Hollywoodish version of the frontier I've seen, with a lot of dirt and grime and shaggy hair and barely-making-it. The movie drags a little at times, but it abounds with stark beauty, realism, and Jeremiah's unrelenting perseverance. Redford as the soft-spoken man of few words and quiet but decisive action is perfectly cast.

Oh, and that catchy theme song by The Captain and Tenille gives the film a quirky touch. Just kidding! The score was very fitting, if not particularly memorable.

Summary: A Genuinely Entertaining, Immersive Film
Review: Jeremiah Johnson does a great job of entertaining. It presents appealing scenery, an interesting story, good acting, and a rare look into the reality of the early 1800's American mountain man.

The film is brutal at times, wholesome at others, and keeps you guessing by not knowing what is next and or when his life reaches a final, peaceful phase, through the film's habit of appearing to end when it's not. But the story does conclude with Johnson earning his place in the wilderness and the respect of the local Crow Indian tribe. Even in the lonely wilderness of the west man needs the company of others to survive, as Johnson find out. And as the old wise trapper teaches him, humans are as territorial as the great Grizzlies of the wild, and thus the native tribes whom he is forced to deal with.

The DVD is suprisingly well done despite it's somewhat bland packaging. Inside you'll find an intro and intermission breaks with soundtrack music, a documentary, some recommendations and words about the film in a clickable slide show format. The sound is also remastered into Dolby 5.1. The DVD visual quality is more than adequate despite the strange anamolies in the opening seconds.

I paid approximately $15 for this DVD, couldn't be happier with the purchase.

Summary: you will enjoy watching this film
Review: I decided to review this film after having purchased it from amazon.com. This is a very nice movie to watch if you like the outdoors. It is also a film that teaches you about the origins of this country and how the first settlers had to adapt to their new sorroundings including wild animals and Indians. This film also shows the conflict between Indians and european settlers from a neutral point of view...showing the good and bad side of each culture. It even shows how a man and woman relationship between two different cultures overcomes all barriers. The reason I am giving this film 4 stars instead of 5 is because the film shows scenes from the beggining of the movie when it gets to the end. I still highly recommend this movie and am happy that I purchased it!
