Review: John Wayne was a truely great actor and with True Grit he was finally recognized by winning the Academy Award. True Grit is loaded with action and enough Duke swaggering to please any fan. A must see for all Wayne fans(obviously) or western fans.

Review: With faithful adherence to the dialect of the post-civil war west and EVERY character actor, from Richard Doucette to Ron Sobel to Strother Martin to Jeff Corey perfectly cast, The Duke so impressed me with the depth of his portrayal that I named the family cat - you guessed it - General Stirling Price. I don't know that there will every be a climax to match Cogburn's shootout with the Lucky Ned Pepper Gang, with Pepper ably portrayed by film giant Robert Duvall. This will go down, alongside The Shootist and The Qiet Man as one of the great ensemble films of all time.

Review: John Wayne was great, maybe even better than Mclintock which is another favorite of mine! The bad guys lose, a woman gets spanked, and its got the Duke, what more could a guy ask for?

Review: John Wayne's depth and range as as an actor (and comedian) are highlighted in this outstanding film. What makes this film great is the fact that Wayne consciencely succeeded in molding his roll of Rooster Cogburn into a parody of himself. And if you can get beyond Glen Campbell's crooning of the theme song at the beginning there is an outstanding musical score by Elmer Bernstein lurking in the background.

Summary: The Duke's Academy Award winning performance!
Review: "True Grit" starring John Wayne as US Marshall Rooster Cogburn, Kim Darby as Mattie Ross and Glen Campbell as Texas Ranger LeBeouf is a classic western that is suited for all ages. The Duke is in his element as a crotchety, "shoot-first, ask-questions-later", US Marshall who is hired by Mattie Ross to find the killer of her father. Helping with the search of the murderer Tom Chaney is Campbell as a young, still "wet-behind-the-ears" Texas Ranger who wants Chaney for the murder of a State Senator in Texas.

While starting just a little slow for a Wayne Western, the film picks up steam as the trio head into "Indian Country" to find Chaney. Along the way, Director Henry Hathaway develops each of the characters and binds them together. Darby is terrific as the prim and proper young Ross who is wise beyond years and will be nobody's fool. Campbell, while somewhat stiff as the Texas Ranger, holds his own in the shadow of The Duke.

The supporting cast is outstanding led by Robert Duvall (as Lucky Ned Pepper), Strother Martin, Jeremy Slade and Dennis Hopper (in all too small of a role). The scenery (even if it's not Oklahoma) and cinematography are spectacular. The ending is satisfying and heartfelt. And while the DVD contains nothing in the way of extras and the sound is basically mono, this is one movie that you can watch with the whole family and feel good about.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR JOHN WAYNE AND ALL WESTERN FANS

Review: I have many of Duke's classics in my library and enjoy them each and every time they are played. This is not one to add to my library.

Summary: One of Wayne's best and an absolutely unique western
Review: Hollywood has turned out scads of oaters since Edison first turned a crank, but there is only one True Grit. Several movies highlight the "buddy" aspect of the Old West - like Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid - but none of them make wisecracking buddies out of an aging, near-alcoholic, gunfighting Marshal and a prudish, detail-oriented, fiery young girl. Now, you might think that The African Queen comes close, but it doesn't. In True Grit, Mattie Ross stays true to form. She doesn't change during the movie. Her strengths run smack up against Rooster's vulnerabilities, and she highlights his massive strengths. Neither will give an inch to the other in this movie, and it gives Wayne a chance to show off some very good comedic skills. There is something noble about their relationship, and it is highlighted in one of the warmest scenes ever, at the very end. If you have never seen this movie, be prepared for laughs, action, adventure, an outrageous Wayne character, and an equally strong female lead. If you have seen it well, go see "an old fat man" again!

BTW...I gave this film four stars because, like another reviewer, I can't get over the scenery. I am from Oklahoma, where the action was supposed to have taken place, and friends, THAT ain't Oklahoma!
