Summary: DVD copy a disaster
Review: DVD much worse than VHS version. One great western that should be terrific on DVD. This copy is horrible.

Summary: AN UNDERATED WESTERN!!!
Review: Talk about a great western, I think Clint Eastwood got a lot from Brando's only directed pic! The story kept it's pace and a great love story. But what I loved about what Marlon did was use Latin actors not Anglos pretending to be Latino! And not done in a stereotypical way either which is really rare for 1961! Warning the version I saw had no subtitles so if you know Spanish then it's fine but if you don't, then brush up:) or you can view from the acting what is going on. Absolutely fantastic, Marlon Brando should had directed more flicks!

Summary: Much ado about nothing.
Review: I CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I SAW A MOVIE WITH SO MANY GLOWING REVIEWS THAT TURNED OUT TO BE SO DREADFULLY DULL. BRANDO DESERVES PROPS FOR HIS AMBITION. CLEARLY,HE WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A FILM OF EPIC PROPORTIONS. UNFORTUNATELY THE FILM IS SLOW AND THE SCRIPT FORGETTABLE.AND IT'S HARD TO FEEL ANY SYMPATHY OR HATRED TOWARDS BRANDO'S QUIET "RIO". ONLY CLINT EASTWOOD & CHARLES BRONSON IN SERGIO LEONES "SPAGHETTI WESTERNS" COULD GET AWAY WITH SAYING SO LITTLE IN SUCH A LONG FILM. ALSO, CONTRARY TO WHAT MOST OF THE REVIEWS SAID,THE MOVIE ITSELF BREAKS ONLY A FEW MOLDS THAT WERE TYPICAL OF WESTERN MOVIES. IF YOU WANT TO SEE AN EPIC MOVIE THAT TURNS WESTERN CLICHES ON THEIR HEAD THEN YOU'VE GOT TO SEE "THE GOOD,THE BAD,AND THE UGLY" AND "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST".PREFERABLY IN LETTER-BOX EDITION WHICH TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE 70mm PANORAMIC CAMERA EMPLOYED TO FULL EFFECT. SOMETHING BRANDO AT THAT TIME CLEARLY COULDN'T DO OR APPRECIATE AS AN ACTOR/DIRECTOR. I'LL TAKE ACTOR/DIRECTOR KEVIN COSTNER'S BEAUTIFULLY FILMED "DANCES WITH WOLVES" OVER THIS ANY DAY.

Summary: One-eyed Jacks
Review: Now this is the copy to purchase. It's Dolby mixed and it's in letterbox (185:1), not mentioned on the cover. For this movie, to be able to find it with these options, is a treat. Brando plays the same type of brooding character that he portrays in all his other movies, except this is a western. I love westerns. Malden, in his early career bad guy movie rolls. Did you see Nevada Smith? Ben Johnson and Slim Pickens are scum. Anyway, I'm not going to say anything other than get this copy before it goes out of print. It's the best copy of One-eyed Jacks available. Cinematography is just beautiful. It takes place in Monterey, CA.

Summary: Favorite
Review: Im 60 and have seen many films. This is my favorite. Not because of the plot..its ok, but the cast is the best. Brando is my all time favorite. Malden can hold his own with anyone in this type of picture, and the rest, but Ben Johnson is the standout for me. When he blanches in the cabin on the ocean when Brando throws the table. Its one of the best scenes in any movie I,ve ever seen. I saw the movie when it first came out..bought the VHS a few years ago and keep it in the safe. I watch it once a year weather I need to or not.

Summary: ....the first Italian western
Review: This fine film was taken away from Brando & butchered by the studio when he dallied too long over the editing. One Eye Jacks may be the first Italian western. The pace is leisurely; the scenery awesome; western cliches are dwelled upon & turned upside down (Slim Pickens drawls, "You ain't gonna get any older than tomorrow." Brando's Jesus-as-unredeemed-outlaw character is horsewhipped, crucifixion-style, by the hypocritical Karl Malden. Hugo Friedhofer's score is one of the finest ever composed for a Hollywood movie - he clearly admired Brando. Somewhere out there is the director's cut. Let's see it!

Summary: Horrible
Review: I wish that I read some of these reviews before I bought this piece of junk. I liked the movie when I saw it at the theater, but this dvd sucks. The soundtrack gets so loud at times you can't even hear the dialog. At other times it sounds like a distorted guitar played as loud as possible inside a giant metal drum, it hurts to listen to it. Like most of the other reviewers said, DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK, YOU'LL BE SORRY.

Summary: Widscreen, One Eyed Jacks
Review: Got the Widescreen version of One Eyed Jacks from Diamond Entertainment a week ago. Its great for 6.99. No extras though but didnt expect any. Maybe one day Paramount will release it and it will be better but for now if you dont want to wait, get the Diamond Entertainment version.

Summary: BEST dvd VERSION
Review: Of all the various versions of this movie that are available on DVD this is by far the best. It is not perfect: The color is a little off, the focus is a bit soft, but it is actually acceptable (better than a VHS). Platinum, the label that puts this version out, had the good taste to letter-box this edition... If you love this movie like I do, you won't be too dissapointed with this disc. I have bought two of the other version around and had to return them, they were so bad. Until Paramount puts out the "official" version, this one is a keeper (and I don't think Paramount ever will, since there are alreadly too many verions around for it to be a profitable undertaking for a major studio). To be redundant: This version is better than a VHS, and better than the broadcasts I've seen on cable. PLEASE NOTE: Amazon.com is including all of the reviews without differntiating between the various DVD versions of this film. I am refering to the FRONT ROW release and not the others (which are absolutely awful).

Summary: There are good DVD transfers out there
Review: A number of reviewers have complained about the lousy transfers that have been made to DVD of "One Eyed Jacks." I found a transfer that, while not perfect, appears to be a lot better than what has been described by reviewers here at Amazon. The film was released on Front Row Video, which is a fairly typical, low budget, "public domain" releasing company. I was surprised to find that their copy has been released in the widescreen format and that the source print is in relatively good shape. The print is the full 141 minute version. There are no extras on the DVD save some chapter breaks which are incorrectly listed both on the DVD case and the DVD itself. Amazon would do well to seek out this copy from Front Row (no, I don't work for them). It's certainly not the definitive DVD release of this Western, but it's a lot better than what has been described by many of the viewers.
