Summary: Brando Directs!
Review: This review refers to the BCI Eclipse(Brentwood Home Video) DVD edition of "One Eyed Jacks"(1961)..... "One Eyed Jacks", is the first and only film directed by Marlon Brando.It's a great western adventure with lots of action, romance and some great scenery.The story is a captivating one. Brando("Rio") stars with Karl Malden("Dad Longworth") as two bank robbers on the run from the Federales in Mexico, They are pinned down and only one can get away to get fresh horses for their escape. Dad is the one to go, but greed gets the best of him. He takes off with the loot and leaves Rio to be captured, and sent to a Mexican Jail for 5 long years. He escapes and goes looking for Dad, finally finding him in Monterey, California, where "Dad" is now a tough Sheriff and has a beautiful step-daughter, Louisa. The action and the romance heat up along the beautiful California coastline as Rio is bent on revenge and falls for the beautiful Louisa. Pina Pellicer won a Best Actress for her role as Louisa at the Sebastion International Film Festival, and Charles Lang was nominated for the exquiste cinematography. The film also stars Katy Jurado(always wonderful), and western legends Slim Pickens and Ben Johnson.The music by Hugo Friedhofer is beautiful and captures the essence of the story. This DVD by BCI is a decent transfer of this 42 year old film.There is not much sign of age. It's not as pristeen as you would expect from a big studio release, but you can't go wrong for the price. The colors are nice(although a bit dated) and dialouge clear.The California coastline looks very inviting. This film may also be purchased in a 4 film set of western legends. "Legends of the West"(also BCI) includes this one with "The Sundowners" starring Robert Preston and Robert Sterling,"The Big Trees" starring Kirk Douglas, and "Vengeance Valley" with Burt Lancaster and Robert Walker. This is classic Brando...enjoy...Laurie

Review: impressive directorial debut from brando (he took over the reigns from kubrick). this psychological western is a bit dated and maybe a little too lengthy for the average moviegoer. however with a cast like brando, karl malden, ben johnson and slim pickens, the sweeping views of mexico and monterrey and a well developed story One Eyed Jacks is a movie well worth viewing

Summary: One Eyed Jacks
Review: THE WORST video transfer I have ever bought! It is NOT in widescreen as some other reviewers have suggested and it is NOT in Dolby Stereo. This DVD also wins the award for the worst packaging and extras features: that is, nothing! And can you believe that a film of over 2 1/2 hours has only 4 chapters? Do not buy this DVD unless you have a perverse collection of dud DVDs. As much as like this film and the star this DVD is heading straight for the trashcan! There should be a law against putting out such low quality DVDs like this out on the market!

Summary: Worst Transfer in Recorded History
Review: Nothing equals the dereliction of those who transferred this masterpiece into a monstrosity. Audio cacophony is coupled with video distortion. Even my dog raised his leg over this DVD to show his disdain. Caveat emptor! This DVD deserves a ZERO!

Summary: For Those Who Like Brando, Peckinpah and Westerns
Review: Decent westerns are hard to find, this 1961 film stands out with Brando. It is a recognizable Peckinpah screenplay. Though not as violent or refined you will notice the pre-Wild Bunch appearance of the cowboys and their low key, down and dirty personalities. In 61 westerns had just begun being less moralistic. Brando plays the badass good guy Rio. And to show he's a badboy he impregnates his rival's stepdaughter. Stanley Kubrick quit as director and I suppose Brando did the best he could. The movie lacks some intensity, but sporadically shows flare; overall it is a good decent western. You have to see it if like Brando and Peckinpah!

Review: Dear Fellow Viewers: I intend to buy the Alpha offering of DVD One Eyed Jacks but don't know if the quality is good. I have read the DVD reviews with conflicting comments from good to bad. Since there are three versions being sold out there, I just want to know if the Alpha product is the good one being emulated or the bad one being lambasted.

Summary: An Underrated Classic
Review: Its hard to believe this movie is over 40 years old,but it retains its power and passion in what is one of the most underrated westerns ever filmed. True to form,it is a very serious movie but wasn't Brando always serious? However,any serious DVD collector should not be without this version of the movie,its in Widescreen and the visuals are stunning. It is at a bargain price at present so I would urge any western buff to grab it immediately

Review: No soy un gran entusiasta del western; ni siquiera del cine en general, pero recientemente adquirí éste film en DVD y realmente me ha impactado por su excelente trama, ambientación y guión, una película que yo no consideraría un western y si un drama y más hallá de la calidad técnica del film en sí, la actuación del elenco de actores y actrices me pareció muy buena y desgraciada y penosamente para mí...quedé sobrecogido por la belleza de Luisa (PINA PELLICER), cuya calidez y rasgos me dejó prendado y busqué otras películas suyas afanosamente por toda la red pero navegando me sentí tremendamente apenado al enterarme que sólo hizo 5 películas (Macario, One-Eyed Jacks, Rogelia, Días de otoño y El Pecador) y 2 apariciones esporádicas en series televisivas americanas "Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The" (1962) y "Fugitive, The" (1963)su muerte prematura impidió ver una estrella emergente en la historia del cine latino.
Nació en Ciudad de México el 3 de Abril de 1935 (contaba 26 años cuando rodó One Eyed-Jacks) y falleció por suicidio en la misma Ciudad de México cuando tenía sólo 29 años el 4-12-1964.
