Review: Dean Martin and the Duke in the same western directed by Howard Hawkes, how brilliant is that? My favorite movie of all time. John Wayne has his usual poise and Dean Martin adds an amzingly powerful touch. Mixed with the spice of Angie Dickinson, humur of Walter Brennen, and youth of Ricky Nelson. Rio Bravo is an underated clasic western. Watch it and see what I mean.

Review: Well, Pilgrim, what else would you want? The Duke is outnumbered but he's hanging tough. Dean Martin's got the shakes (real stretch there) and Walter Brennen dispenses lovable guff. Ricky Nelson signs on. Angie Dickinson pines for the Duke.People shoot, sing and throw dynamite around. All of this builds up to The Big Showdown. Pilgrim, if that's not enough, you need to stay East River.

Review: My father took me to see Rio Bravo in 1959 I was ten, it was the first movie we saw together. It was the last movie we saw together, 35 years later. I hold this movie close to the heart.

Review: If you are looking a film that seeks to solve the mysteries of the universe - this ain't it! What it is is a great western staring the Duke. the story line is similar to El Dorado and Rio Lobo - John Wayne, a rag tag group of misfits, and a hilarious old coot take on the bad guys - an learn'm a thing or two! This is a keeper!

Review: The 2nd movie I think of when I think of favorite Westerns (the 1st is Liberty Valence), a thoughtful early "buddy" movie; with real humor as well as real depth. We are offered heroes to emulate, who have real weaknesses with which we can empathize. Utterly entertaining, due to the perfect balance of elements.

Review: In the 60's, Benton & Newman (who would soon write Bonne & Clyde) said in Esquire that Rio Bravo was of the best two or three movies of all time. They were right. It's Hawks' ultimate character movie. The story actually means nothing as classic as it is. Every time the actual story seems to peak, Hawks moves on or even dissipates the suspense he's almost inadvertently created The movie goes on and on, superficially seeming to squander the integral hooks in the plot, yet we keep watching with not only increasinfg interest, but comfort--because of the characters and their homely interaction. The ultimate in this beguiling technique occurs in the showdown at the end. It's set up like an OK Corral shootout, except it's played for laughs. John Wayne, Dean Martin and Walter Brennan swapping jokes under a canopy of flying bullets. It's the model for many subsequent movies. For example, Clint Eastwood's "The Gauntlet." Not that any of them approached it, but its influence speaks for itself. This is thought of as a "John Wayne movie," but Dean Martin is really the star. His greatest role along with "Kiss Me Stupid."
