Rating: Summary: Awesome Re-release Review: Since I had always enjoyed this movie, when if showed up on cable, after getting a DVD player, it was on the top of my want list, and I was not disappointed.First, remember to go into set-up on language. The default seemed to be prologic. What a difference in switching to 5.1 channel. This was a true reporduction of an excellent soundtrack, as opposed to very disappointing DVDs of other films of this era. This is one DVD that truly makes you feel like you're in a theater. As to the movie, what a cast! There will probably never be a Silverado II because it would cost too much to get all these, now super-stars, back together. This is one of many truly great Westerns, but one of the few that is likely to show it's worth on DVD.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely a classic Review: Despite being put off by the endless 80's whining and angst of Kasden's Big Chill I gave Silverado a chance based on good word-of-mouth. What an epic. It grabs you at the beginning with the basecleff rumbling of an old saloon upright piano and hurls you into a grand, sweeping vista. All this just after an ambush that seems to have the sound and editing crispness of Shane. The cast is the best ensemble I have ever seen. Period. Brian Dennahey, Kevin Kline, and Linda Hunt are standouts. I really enjoyed Kevin Costner's debut as an ADHD young gun, and John Cleese was a pleasent surprise. The clearcut good-versus-evil storyline is well told, well directed and the sets and costuming are authentic. You will enjoy this movie if you ignore the fact that 1) females are purely background characters (with the exception of Linda Hunt, who steals every scene she's in) and 2) this is no 1990's politically-correct, retelling of the western fable. It's absolutely a classic.
Rating: Summary: Excellent blending of Old Western and New Western. Review: This movie is a wonderful blending of tradtional style Old Western history with a more realistic intrpretation of New Western history. The acting is wonderful although I wanted to see more of Jeff Goldblum and Rosanne Arquette. The music and scenerey is dramatic and draws you into the movie. At the end when they go riding off into the sunset you almost want to get on your horse and go with them. This movie is light on the hokey stuff of classic westerns which makes it even more palatable to a non-western fan.
Rating: Summary: A little bit of everything that makes a Westeren Review: OK, so is this a great movie, or what? I know, it is full of chiches, burdened by a couple of bad performances (you know who they are) and includes certain characters (Jeff Goldbloom's gambler, for example) for reasons that only Lawrence Kasdin may understand. But for all that, it resonates with an excitement few movies do. The cast is exceptional: Kevin Klin, Bryan Dennehy, Linda Hunt, Scott Glen, John Clesse, Danny Glover and Kevin Costner (alright, maybe we don't want ,to brag about Kevin). The Kasdin script is exceptional, and gives full play to each actor's talents. The scene between Kostner and Hunt in the bar where they discuss their mutual love of a good "smoky saloon" is a great scene, as are the ones with John Clesse as a sheriff reluctanly enforcing his authority. Dennehy makes a wonderfully likeable villian and Scott Glenn is a great foil for Padin, the Kevin Kline character. Every Western gimmic and convention imaginable is employed in this film, which is a bit too long because of that, but great fun nevertheless. No one can view this movie and not come away with quotable lines and memorable scenes. It's a great tribute to the American Western and a real entertainment in its own right.
Rating: Summary: The Last Great Western Review: Lawrence Kasdan has made this wonderful, light tribute to the great old westerns of old. He has assembled a great cast, including Scott Glenn, Kevin Kline, an incredibly young Kevin Costner (before he started taking himself so damned seriously), Danny Glover, and Brian Denehey (as a really great bad-guy sheriff). The good guys are on their way to the town of Silverado, where they do good (by coming to the aid of D. Glover), save Costner from a wrongful hanging, rescue a band of settlers from evil swindlers, meet up with family and potential friends and slay the bad guys. Fine dialogue, great cinematography, a story that also honors the tradition of the genre without taking itself too seriously. A fun way to spend a couple of hours.
Rating: Summary: A modern classic Review: A must see for any fan of the classic western! I first saw this film in the theaters when it was first released. The TV formatted version did not do it justice. Finally, the DVD version hit stores! Thank goodness! It was like seeing it again for the first time. The behind the scenes material was very interesting too.
Rating: Summary: A DVD review Review: This DVD doesn't quite live up to the full potential of the technology. The picture quality had some dust floaters but they weren't very noticeable unless you were looking for them. The sound quality was good, which is what you would expect for a picture nominated for sound mixing and soundtrack Academy Awards. The DVD has a 40-minute documentary, which was very good with commentary from mainly the director, although some of the actors are heard from too. The documentary also had some deleted scenes, which explained why the whole relationship between Rosanna Arquette's character and the heroes didn't make much sense; most of it was cut out. It would have been better to have these deleted scenes in their own section. One interesting omission was in the actors' biography section, none of the actresses were represented, you also don't hear from the actresses in the documentary, which was odd. All together a good DVD especially if you love Westerns as I do.
Rating: Summary: Who says they don't make good westerns anymore? Review: In 1985, the era of the western was long gone, or was it? This movie not only brings back everything a good western should have, plus it is a perfect modernization of The Musketeers (Paden as D'artagnan, Jake as Aramis, Emmett as Athos and Mal as Porthos). Definitely a must see film. And of course on DVD better sound and picture quality. Get a copy asap and at Amazon's prices you can't go wrong.
Rating: Summary: Silverado Review: I thought this movie had it all, action, good stars and comedy. It made me laugh and there were parts that made me cry. Especially when Danny Glover's father was killed. Brian Dennehy made a great bad guy. I loved this movie!
