Summary: Handsome horses, principled cowboys, nice backdrop
Review: This is a good basic western based on a true story. I don't know why it just isn't any better, Cusack is good, the other actors are decent but it just doesn't take off.Calgary is beautiful but the film just drags in the middle.

Summary: A great unknown film
Review: This is an outstanding film. I cannot believe that it is not better known. I have always liked John Cusack but was unaware that he was this good of an actor. Never thought of him as a rugged he-man type but he plays a good one. This is not only a great western but a great film in general that would appeal to almost anyone. L.Q. Jones is great as a mean S.O.B. Where has he been hiding? Highly recommended.

Summary: Uncompromising
Review: This is one of the most uncompromising westerns I have ever see, one of the top ten ever made. John Cusack plays Myrl Redding, a stubborn headstrong man with a tough constitution. A man with pride and a strong sense of right and wrong. He wants nothing more than to be left to his own accord. He is a good neighbor, a good husband, a good father, a good man. He runs an honest business as a horse trader and his word is his bond. He is not afraid to stand up to anyone or anything he sees as unfair. He will speak his mind at the drop of a hat, he speaks the truth as he sees it. In the opening scene he runs into the territory's most powerful man, Henry Ballard, played by L.Q. Jones. Ballard is equally uncomprosing but not quite as moral. The interaction between these two uncompromising men in the opening scene sets the tone for things to come. Ballard takes an instant dislike to Redding. The line has been drawn in the sand. When Redding tries to move some horses to sell at auction he finds Ballard has bought more land and has put up a toll gate in his path. Without the toll Redding is forced to leave his two prize horses as collateral. Upon his return he finds his horses in a condition unlike that which he left them. Redding will have none of it and the fued begins. Across the territory of Wyoming the fued continues, to a beautifull backdrop. John Goodman gives a strong performance as the territorial judge, the Honorable Joe B. Toliver. Toliver is fair minded and tough. He wants to side with Redding in the dispute but doesn't know if the law will allow him. Is Toliver big enough to stop this fued as it snowballs? Is the Governor of the territory? The Attorney General? The U.S. Army? Watch and see. At outstanding, gritty movie. You'll love it!

Summary: An Excellent Lesson, still needed today
Review: This movie tells a great story of what men of character will do to uphold their principles. John Cusack's role is one of courage and above all it shows us what is really important in life. A man must never abandon his principles because it would be expediant. This story is very well done and well written and is a lesson for us all, that even when you are right, you won't necessarily win. The lesson of life is if you believe in it you also have to be willing to pay the price of the those beliefs.

Summary: Absolutely Fantastic
Review: This movie was on the Movie Network and I'm very glad I taped it at my Dad's suggestion. It got two stars in our TV Guide and I'm learning to never rely on it for it's opinions on quality films. This movie was fantastic, brilliantly acted, brilliantly directed, and extremely well written. The main theme of the film- honour and justice- was clearly carried through without being complicated or overly simplistic. John Cusack has never let me down and this movie is no exception. And, the Alberta mountains are as breath-taking a landscape as any. Go see this movie!

Summary: " WOW ...I WAS SPEACHLESS"
Review: This movie will make you cry if your sensitive and will make a lump the size of Texas in your throat if your not. Im not going to say alot about the plot (so I dont ruin it for you ) except that it takes the avenging a wrong theme to new heights.It will make you cheer for Cusak and feel for all his loss. Cusak gives one of the most powerfull performances in a western ever. Bieng a huge Eastwood fan I can honestly say WOW. A must see even If you dont like westerns. Did I say WOW. Enjoy

Review: To those of us who follow any of HBO's original programming, it should come as no surprise that a film on the level of THE JACK BULL premieres on HBO. While the folks out in Hollywood are busy heaping money on so-called films such as AMERICAN OUTLAWS and TEXAS RANGERS, leave it to HBO and John Cusak to come up with the good stuff. Though the big screen fare is far glossier (and no doubt costlier), Cusak's gritty western is simply far superior. Boasting a cast including Cusak, John C. McGinley, John Goodman, and L. Q. Jones, the film out-acts its big screen competitors by a mile and a half. Combine it with a cold, smart, gritty screenplay by Cusak's dad and strong direction by John Badham and you have a film worthy of inclusion among really good Westerns. f you want to see Ashton Kutcher, James Van Der Beek, Colin Farrell, or Usher Raymond, you'll have to rent the other two. But if you want to see something more on par with Clint Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN, well then, THE JACK BULL is calling your name!

Summary: The Best Western I've Seen In A Long Time!
Review: We watched this movie on HBO 4/25/02. What a great western! John Cusack was fabulous as Redding! John Goodman did excellent in the part of the lawyer. Great story, acting by everyone. In my opinion, this movie beats "Silverado," the last "great" western, all to pieces! One of just a few movies that I MUST have in my home library. A classic!

Summary: Not as horsy as one might hope
Review: While the title refers to a terrier, it's a metaphor for the tough, tenacious lead character, Myrl Redding (John Cusack). Redding is a Wyoming horse-breeder who turns vigilante when his Native American friend Billy (Rodney A. Grant) is nearly beaten to death by a rival horse-breeder. Horses, while not actual character, provide strong support for a stellar cast including John Goodman, L.Q. Jones, John Savage, and Miranda Otto. Based on the novel by Michael Kohlhass.
