Summary: Endeavor to Persevere
Review: This is not only one of the greatest westerns of all time, it is one of the greatest movies of all time. Not only is it authentic (as opposed to realistic), entertaining, well acted and well directed, but it contains a barrel-full of indispensible advice that is applicable to everyday life, such as:

"when the goin' gets tough, and it looks like your gonna lose, that's when you gotta get mean... I mean plum mad dog mean. 'cause if you don't then you neither win nor live" or something like that.

There are great tactical lessons to be learned from the "Missoura Boat Ride", the singing Ferryman, Fletcher, and the various Indian characters:

"and when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war..."

This movie provides enough one-liners and memorable quotes to rival any shakespearean play.

I can only echo the sentiments of other reviewers and add that I have watched this DVD dozens of times and it still doesn't get old. American citizens, and southerners in particular, should be required to watch this movie at least once a year.

Summary: "Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy."
Review: Okay, I'll admit it: this film has some goofy quirks, uneven moments, and scenes where Clint mumbles his lines as if he were a ventriloquist, yet THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES remains one of my very favorite westerns. I saw this movie when it first came out in 1976, watched it every time I could find it on cable, then purchased the VHS tape when it first became available. After all these years--after countless viewings--this film remains as entertaining and as enjoyable as the night I first saw it on the big screen.

The story is compelling: Josey Wales, a quiet, peaceful Missouri farmer, joins a band of Confederate soldiers to avenge the brutal murders of his wife and son (played by Eastwood's son, Kyle), then refuses to surrender at the end of the war. He becomes an outlaw, hunted relentlessly by the very Union soldiers who killed his family, a manhunt that sends Wales and an ever-growing group of stragglers deep into Texas. "Sometimes trouble just follows a man," Wales laments prophetically. And sometimes a character--like Josey Wales--portrays such a rich depth of anger, anguish, and an overwhelming desire to live in peace, that the viewer is mesmerized by the injustice of it all.

Clint Eastwood directed this movie, his very first to direct, and gave notice to Hollywood that he was also a force to be reckoned with behind the camera. The cast is uneven, but Chief Dan George, Will Sampson, and John Vernon stand out and give impressive performances. And for those of us who have on occasion enjoyed a plug of chewing tobacco, the "spitting scenes" are hysterical. THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES is a keeper, a grand "shoot-'em-up" with a heart of gold.

Summary: "Josey" Remastered...Looks and Sounds Great
Review: This review refers to the Warner Bros DVD Widescreen Edition of ""The Outlaw Josey Wales".......

Josey Wales is another of Clint's Eastwood's bigger than life Western characters that you won't soon forget.Josey though, is not like the others that preceeded him. It becomes apparent throughout this film, that this tough loner, on the run from murderers, has a heart the size of Texas.(And of course in this one we DO know his name!).
Eastwood also does an artful job of directing this tale, that has everthing from action to romance, and even a little comedy.

The end of the civil war is nearing. The northern soldiers though, won't let up. The "Red Legs" as some of these notorious war criminals are called are still pillaging, and plundering the homesteads in the territory and...killing the families.Wales is a victim of these brutal attacks, his house burned to the ground and his wife and son viciously attacked and murdered. He joins up with a group of others who are out to avenge their families and they become a notorious group. When they are offered a deal at the end of the war, they all turn themselves in..all but one...Josey Wales!

Ride with Josey(everyone else does) across the beautiful western vistas, as he takes on the "Red Legs" that are after him, saves a family from "Commancheros", makes friends with the Indians, and wears his heart on his sleeve as along the way he seems to attract a group of outcasts, including a dog, that he just can't leave behind.

Clint surrounds himself with the most marvelous cast, including Sondra Locke, Bill McKinney, John Vernon and Chief Dan George who provides many of the lighter moments in this action packed western.

If you are already a fan of this film made in 1976 and wondering about the quality of the transfer, you will be thrilled by the way it looks and sounds. The picture in widescreen is gorgeous. All scenes including the darker and nighttime are sharp and clear. Colors are vibrant. The soundtrack remastered in 5.1 Dolby Digital is also wonderful. From the pounding hooves of the racing horses, to the rain, to the music and the dialouge, you won't miss a thing. It's a dual-layer format, but I did not notice any of those little pauses that casues sometimes."Extras" are in the way of production notes only. There are some interesting facts on how Eastwood came to read the book and make the film.

What?! You haven't seen this yet??? It's a must for any Eastwood or Western fan! Go for it. "Now, Spit!"..Chief Dan George......Enjoy..Laurie

Summary: Clint Eastwood's Best Western!
Review: The Outlaw Josey Whales has garnered the classic status that it unquestionably deserves. It will never go out of style!
If you haven't yet seen this movie you must have been living in a cave for the past 25 years. This is a spectacular, if not slightly confrontational film that ranks among one of Clint Eastwood's best performances! Also featuring some of the most memorable lines in maybe not-so recent memory.
Simply put, The Outlaw Josey Whales rocks!

Summary: THEY DONE HIM WRONG....
Review: As I am not ordinarily a fan of westerns, I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed this film. It was an engrossing and entertaining movie, and, unlike others in this genre, it is an intelligent and well thought out film.

The film tells the story of a Missouri farmer who, towards the end of the Civil War, finds his home overrun by renegade union soldiers who set fire to his homestead, kill his wife and son, and leave him for dead. After burying his family, he joins a group of confederate guerillas who have suffered similar tragedies. Ultimately, the war ends and their leader brings them in for surrender, except for Josey Wales, who watches their surrender from afar. Good thing he did not join them, as their surrender turns into an execution by the very same men who had pillaged his home and killed his family.

Wales escapes only to be relentlessly hunted down by the very men who had wronged him, as well as by bounty hunters who want that five thousand dollar reward offered for his capture. Wales rides on to escape them, and along his travels acquires a motley entourage whom he befriends and who befriend him. What happens on his journey is classic Eastwood.

Clint Eastwood plays his role as a stoic man of few words, while Chief Dan George is an absolute delight as part of Wales' entourage. The rest of the cast is uniformly excellent. Of course, Sandra Locke, as Eastwood's real life main squeeze at the time, got star billing, even though her role was one of the smaller ones and her performance the least impressive of the supporting cast.

This remains one of the more entertaining films in this genre. It also made Hollywood sit up and take serious notice of Eastwood as a major force in the film industry.

Summary: Quite possibly Clint's best pictue.
Review: This is more than just a shoot em' up wanderer picture (as opposed to the Man With No Name trilogy), that delivers emotion and social protest. Written made in the time of the Vietnam War you can't help but see the simlarities that Josey Wales has with fighting and the attitudes towards Vietnam. It's hard to decide, but this film definately runs neck and neck with Unforgiven.

Summary: Uh Huh! What they said!
Review: Just like everybody else, I have loved this movie for years and years. Clint outdid himself here. Josey Wales is hardest, meanest, most cold-bloodiest good-guy to ever trod the western film world. I will continue to watch this movie over and over, now that I have it on DVD. Far and away my favorite movie.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: While I must admit at the start, I am a fan of westerns, war movies, and action movies. That being said, this movie ranks as one of the top three westerns I've ever seen (along with Tombstone and The Searchers). It has a great story line, a handfull of very good actors, and it flows very well. Not the "spaghetti westerns" that Clint Eastwood had starred in previously.

When his family is killed, he learns to become a killer and is very proficient at it. As the movie progresses you see the title character (Jose Wales) transform from a loving husband and father, to a hard edged killer bent on revenge, to a father figure to a peace loving man that will now revert back to being a killer to protect those that he has come to love.

An excellent movie that will not let you down.

Summary: A must to own
Review: One of the GREATEST westerns ever made. No down points. This simply is as good as it gets.

Summary: One of Eastwood's best westerns!
Review: I enjoyed this western as Clint Eastwood living in the civil war era goes after those who killed his family. This movie has suspense, humor, and great action as any of his other movies have. It is a must see for any Clint Eastwood fan!
