Summary: A Fine Light Comedy
Review: "Support Your Local Sheriff" is a good comedy western. That's not necessarily saying a lot. There are lots of comedy westerns around. This is one of the best of the bunch, though. It's not the cleverest or most original comedy you'll ever see, but it doesn't try to be. It succeeds admirably by delivering simple, unpretentious humor with a little romance thrown in on top. It stars James Garner, who gained fame playing Bret Maverick in the classic comedy western TV series, "Maverick". Garner plays Jason McCullough, a man on his way to Australia and just looking for a way to earn a little money along the way. As luck would have it, he rides into Calendar, a wild and woolly frontier town that finds itself in need of a new sheriff every few days. Joan Hackett plays the mayor's daughter, who's very "accident-prone", but knows an eligible bachelor when she sees one. McCullough coolly takes on the task of introducing law and order to the town, while keeping Hackett's klutzy character at bay at the same time. With veteran actors Walter Brennan, Harry Morgan, and Jack Elam providing great support, this flick keeps the laughs coming in a steady stream from start to finish. It's good fun for audiences of all ages. Recommended.

Summary: They don't make them any funnier!
Review: A must for any western buff! Hilarious even in subtle moments this movie can be watched over and over and it just gets funnier! A sure cure for the blues. James Garner is at his best. The whole cast is superb. Highly recommended for a good chuckle!

Summary: My 2nd favorite Garner movie of all time
Review: Boy this was hard, ranking my Favorite James Garner movies. It came down to the two Support your... movies. I had to go with the one that had the sidewinder, Susan Plesette and the X-Rifleman and Cub second baseman Swifty Morgan.

SYLSheriff came in second because he was just passin thru on his way to australia anyway.

Summary: 60 for who and 40 for who?
Review: Down through time it is easy to get the "support your local" films mixed up. This is the first. This is an educational film teaching you everything from sharing to proper gun pointing etiquette. Everyone has his or her favorite part in this movie. It contains sight gages and puns and jokes (some take time to think about.)

I will not go into detail incase you have not seen this as it is fun to watch the story unfold. However it is several overlapping stories tied together by Jason McCullough (James Garner) who has spent four years on his way to Australia and stops for a little gold prospecting. He needs a job to buy food while prospecting, as the position of sheriff is available.

O.K. I can not help it. He is handed the badge with a dent from a bullet in it.

James Garner: This must have saved his life.

Harry Morgan: It would have, if it weren't for all those other bullets.

This movie may not have all the DVD goodies you look for but it is DVD so it will last as long as the technology.

Summary: Wholesome Entertainment
Review: For pure fun loving comedy, you can not beat this combination of characters and the actors that play the parts. This movie and the sequel, Support your local gunfighter, are two of the most humorus family films that I have ever viewed.Even my wife loved these two films, and she is extremely hard to please.

Summary: Has about 3 laughs
Review: I didn't have very high hopes for this movie. It was okay, I guess. But it had very few laughs. It is sometimes entertaining, but it IS a bit dull. A forgettable movie, but it works (most of the time). Not reccomended too much.

Summary: Light, unpretentiuos, sweet kind of humor
Review: I have no idea how they managed to put all these simple jokes in such sweet package, but they did certainly made just this - they made me laugh and asking for more of the same dish. What I find especially wonderful about this particular spoof - it does not spoil the memories about serous good Westerns. I watched "The Shootist" right before and "Rio Diablo" right after, enjoyed all. Try same with some pleasure stealing spoof like "Blazing Saddles", won't work.

I took 1 star for too much silliness, predictability and a little bit of bad acting from some supporting characters.

Summary: James Garner Is One of the Greatest
Review: I saw this film many years ago when it came out. I loved it then and I love it now. How time goes by. I always liked Joan Hackett. I thought she was great. She left us much too soon. I miss her from the silver screen. This film demonstrates the great depth that director Burt Kennedy had and was never given credit for. I think that the much misunderstood RETURN OF THE SEVEN hurt him. I think it is a classic Western but that is another topic. However this film should have given Kennedy the credit he was due. Few directors have the range that Kennedy has. And few actors have the range that James Garner has. This film is really a great study in human nature.
