Rating: Summary: Mostly for nostalgia reasons. Review: For those who don't know WCCW (later USWA) was a promotion based in Dallas, TX at the Sportatorium. Fritz Von Erich originally ran the territory, basing it around his sons Kerry, David, and Kevin. In 1984 (?), 64,000 people filled Texas Stadium to watch Kerry Von Erich defeat Ric Flair for the NWA Title. Many problems, not the least of which were drugs, killed off the promotion until it was bought up by Jerry Lawler's CWA and turned into the USWA. Most of the matches shown on the "This is Ultimate Wrestling" series are from the end of the WCCW era or the beginning of the USWA era. Others are from the Global Wrestling Federation (GWF) based in the same building, but from a different promoter.Cactus Jack/Shiek Braddock vs. Jeff Jarrett/Matt Borne Cactus you probably already know. Braddock turned on the U.S. to join Skandor Akbar years before John Walker made it cool. Jarrett was considered a future superstar in the business at this point. Matt Borne would go on to become Big Josh in WCW and Doink the Clown in the WWF. This is typical southern U.S.-style wrestling. A babyface gets in trouble, heels cheat, babyface makes big tag, end of match. Not a bad primer for WCCW or the southern tag style. Lightning Kid vs. Dapper Dan Lightning Kid went on to become 1,2,3 Kid or Syxx or X-Pac if you prefer. Dapper Dan is...well. Kid gets in most of the offense here and showcases his light-heavyweight style that wouldn't be in vogue for several years. Bull Rope Match-Dustin Rhodes vs. "Gorgeous" Gary Young This one gets a lot of time. Dustin is the son of Dusty Rhodes who made the Bull Rope match famous. Young didn't do too much outside of the territory. Decent enough match, for a Bull Rope match. Midgets Match - Million $ Baby vs. Mario Santana Midget matches. Eh. Next. Jerry Lawler vs. the Junk Yard Dog Junk Yard Dog was incredibly popular in the eighties. He was probably in the top five with Hogan, Piper, Flair, and Sting in terms of popularity. Problem: He can't wrestle. Lawler avoids this problem brilliantly by playing hide-and-seek with the referee and a chain. At one point the ref searches him all over and goes to check on JYD and Lawler spits the chain out of his mouth. Classic. This is probably the most entertaining match on the set and they barely make contact. A testament to the King. If you're just going to get one of the "Ultimate Wrestling" DVDs, this is the one to get. It has a little something for everyone, plus the best match of the set.
Rating: Summary: 5 mediocre matches Review: This DVD is only 50 minutes long and has only 5 matches. Matches are: 1 Cactus Jack & Sheik Braddock vs Jeff Jarrett & Matt Brome 2 Lightning Kid vs Dapper Dan 3 Dustin Rhodes vs Gary Young Bull Rope Match 4 Million Dollar Baby vs Mario Santana Midget Match 5 Jerry the King Lawler vs Junk Yard Dog All matches are quite old and are from the USWA & GWF. None of the matches are that good. The sound is really bad. The crowd noise is loud and the comintary is turned down so low its really hard to hear. The opening tag match is stange in that half way through it cuts to a pre match promo cut by Jarrett & Brome, then goes right back to the match. DVD Bonus features are direct match acess, an extremly lame triva quiz and a slide show. Overall its a very Boring DVD.
