Summary: Best Movie I've Seen in a Long Time
Review: The first time I saw this movie, I was just flipping through the TV channels and chose it because there was nothing else on. Soon I was watching intensely. I kept storing quotes from the characters in my head. I have never seen Hollywood do a movie that was so much about Life. Overall, the movie kept me watching every second, eager to know what came next. I cried at the end, although I could see it coming. It was the best movie I can ever remember seeing.

Summary: The most heartfelt sports story
Review: I don't watch too many sporty movies. A story about an athlete from any sport or era wouldn't usually interest me, but I saw this movie an TV one afternoon and I fell in love with it. It's easy to identify with Prefontaine's life and struggle. The movie's main plot teaches everyone to believe in themself..no matter what. I was so touched by this film that soon after I became interested in running. I've been on my highschool track team for a little over a year now. Without this movie I wouldn't have found my inspiration to push myself without limits.

Summary: Could Not Get Into the Movie
Review: Maybe because i had such high expectations; for the casting, the portrayal, the energy of the subject of Steve Prefontaine, that i could not get into the movie. I mention casting as the first because it was the first flaw. Donald Sutherland played his heart out as Bill Bowerman, but it was a mistake putting him in. Mind you, he is an outstanding actor, but i found him unconvincing. The actor who played Frank Shorter had no resemblance to him whatsoever. The U.S. Olympic Team was a faceless blur. Lasse Viren looked twenty pounds overweight and could have been a rugby player. The Bill Dellinger character was undeveloped. The movie just didn't flow like the '60's and '70's. And where was his last race, the one where he wore the black singlet? This movie never delivered the excitement of any of his races, and it's a shame. Read about Prefontaine, learn all you can about him and you'll see what i mean about this movie. Then when you finish, watch the movie 'Prefontaine.'

Summary: Can you take "NO" for an answer? This guy couldn't...
Review: This is an incredible inspirational story that will leave your mouths gaping and tears on your cheeks at the end.

I saw this movie on a plane trip... Even with everyone else around, there were tears of joy and anguish throughout this movie.

Pre was an inspiration to me as a runner over the years, even before this movie. Reading works from many people about Steve Prefontaine, and learning from people who shared the track with, and admitted learning from Pre... well, it made an incredible impression on me in my youth.

This movie reinforces the heroic efforts he put forth for every race. There was only one way to run for him, with all of himself and everything he had to offer. It was this, and his rebellious streak, that made him a true winner.

This movie is something for everyone. The kids can learn valuable lessons from everything this movie has to offer... Lessons on dedication, perseverance, seeking the inspiration within ones own self, living a dream, reaching for the highest goals...

There's so many wonderful experiences in this movie, even the bad ones...

Pre wasn't perfect, but he was the best he could be...

Can we all say that? Maybe this movie is what you need to get the spirit back into whatever efforts you're making.

A great pick-me-up. A great love story and date movie. A great movie for the kids.

Get it.

Summary: Unbelieveable inspirational movie
Review: This movie is incredible. I used to be a middle distance runner in high school and then gave it up to pursue money and an easier life. However, after more than 3 years of not running, I am back to running because of this movie. I always dreamed of making an Olympic team and I gave up on my dream. After watching this movie and the Olympic opening ceremony, I have been inspired to return to running and follow my dreams no matter how hard they will be to reach. I actually felt ashamed of myself and thought myself a failure after watching this movie. It was almost as though Steve Prefontaine was going to come up to me and yell at me for giving up. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has given up on their dreams because they were to hard to obtain. Reach for the stars!

Summary: Terrific Sports Story
Review: Having run track competitively, I had a special interest in this film and I was not disappointed. This film dramatized the life of Steve Prefontaine, a pre-eminent U.S. distance runner in the 1970's.

Though some of the details of his life were fudged for dramatic purposes, the essence of Prefontaine was preserved, namely his brash egotistical style of running and living. In addition to its realism regarding the sequences filmed on the track, this film gives a good account of the psychology of running.

Robert Towne did a fabulous job overall with this film, but especially with the realism of the scenes on the track. The dramatic element, focusing on character development of Prefontaine as a person as well as a runner was also well done, elevating it above your typical sports documentary and improving its entertainment value.

Billy Crudup gives a fine performance as Pre. He captures the arrogance and the crushing disappointment of his life. He was also terrific in the running scenes.

Donald Sutherland was also great as Coach Bill Bowerman. Sutherland played the part with the perfect balance of patient guidance and frustration as Pre continued to ignore his prudent advice. It was as if he were trying to guide a lightning bolt.

This was an excellent sports story. I rated it an 8/10. Even for those who are not fans of track and field and never heard of Steve Prefontaine, this is an entertaining and absorbing film.

Summary: Must See Athlete Film
Review: I skipped the two PRE films when they were released as they got little attention. I watched "Prefontaine" on cable and found it interesting but unsatisfying. Last year on a whim, I picked up the DVD of Without Limits. WOW! This film brought back the memories and emotions I felt as a high school runner in 1970. If you have ever strived to reach your potential or acomplish something great, you will relate to With Out Limits. If you have friends who are outstanding athletes, you will find this film on the mark at many levels. Forget the debate of accuracy, don't worry about the unhappy ending, this film captures essence of the athlete and it is truly moving - isn't that what art is all about?

A note to runners and athletes: As a runner in my teens, I was a bigger fan of Jim Ryan than Pre. However, in my first cross country race, it was the exploits of Pre that I used as a "tool" to turn in a terrific performance. It wasn't till my 30's as a runner and triathlete that I learned how to race consistently "without limits". I found it remarkable that in my 40's this film about Pre brought me back to the emotions of my teens.

Enjoy ... rich

Summary: Be Strong
Review: This inspirational movie tells one thing to all runners and inspiring athletes in the world: Think what you can do, and then do it better. Pre set an example to everyone out in the world, not only with running but with what he believed and how he expressed him self with those beliefs. With this movie, younger generations of kids can begin to feel and understand his life, but use it as a stepping stone for their own. Steve should be everyone's guidance and hero, and for those who he isn't, I highly suggest you re-think that. This movie and his life not only kept me going with my running, it helped me mature and see running and life in a light I never thought possible to see.

Summary: A great movie and must for anyone who has ever run
Review: First let me say that I am tired of the entire "Without Limits" vs. "Prefontaine" debate. In my book, these are both complimentary verses of the same song. I personally enjoyed Without Limits much more; when I need to feel inspired, it is the movie that I put in the VCR. "Prefontaine" covers his life in a little more detail and is more factually accurate. For example, "Prefontaine" does a better job with the 1972 Olympics by showing what happened to Lasse Viren in the 10,000 before his race (the 5,000) with Pre, showing what the play by play analysts had to say before the race, etc. Prefontaine is a good movie.

But Without Limits is a great movie. The performances in the movie flat out kick; not only Crudup (as Pre) and Sutherland (as Bill Bowerman), but even some of the more minor parts like Coach Bill Dellinger's ("everyone is offering this kid to make the move" from a phone booth in the rain) are done to perfection. The running sequences are outstanding.

Rent it...buy it...find it on cable, but see this movie.
