Summary: No LP Mode Here
Review: I can't recommend this VCR. It can not record in the LP mode. LP delivers a much better picture than the EP mode. Otherwise it performs well.

Summary: Great VCR but remote could have been better
Review: I replaced an aging 8 year-old RCA VCR with this Toshiba. It was easy to set up and provides excellent picture and sound. I connected it to an RCA TV, entered the code number and the setup was ready to go. Recording was a breeze. The remote however, did not have a couple of features I like to use. 1. no mute button. 2. no "quick view" button or the button that lets you flip back and forth between two channels. So I still have to use the old RCA remote in order to be able to use these features. Also, the remote buttons were small and crowded together. But overall, I am very pleased with the purchase and this VCR provides good value.

Summary: Great value, excellent picture, sound and over-all quality.
Review: I struggled with the purchase of a VCR recently because my 14 year old top-of -the line Sears (made by Samsung) was beginning to get tired and worn out. That VCR had a minimum of 1-3 hours of use per day since new. Needless to say I wanted a replacement that was of equal quality and durability. I found the features of this unit to be the most logical and usable in its class.

This unit is truly unique and a breeze to set up. You just plug in your TV connections and then the VCR to the electrical outlet and walk away from it for an hour. The front display will note that it is in AUTO mode and it automatically sets your channels and the clock! What could be easier? How about setting up the remote to operate my Zenith TV (the only time I really needed the manual)? Hold down the remote's program key and type in the 2-digit code and viola - it's done.

Now for the operation of the VCR: I instructed my 7 and 4 year old sons to study the remote and the VCR front panel; they were watching movies in a couple of minutes and later showed their Grandpa how everything works. It's that simple.

We didn't realize how much we were missing with a stereo two-head machine and then stepping up to a six-head HI-FI. The picture quality and sound clarity is extraordinary! I am a fanatic with sound and this unit really rocks. Considering the flexibility of a VCR compared to DVDs at this point in the technology cycle -if you are looking for high quality sound, picture, ease of set up/use and over-all quality BUY THIS VCR. Don't be fooled into going cheap on a VCR, if you do, you will spend more money over time with less quality and more frustration. Ordering the unit was also a snap, it arrived sooner than I expected, double-boxed and packed very well. This model carries one-year, parts and labor warranty as noted in the manual. Go for it!

Summary: Expected more
Review: I would not recommend this VCR to people who record a lot of programs because of the two-buttons that you have to press to set the timer. It's real easy to shut your VCR off and forget to set the timer function, and for the life of me, I have no clue why this feature is there.

I have had this VCR for about six months now, and I have yet to be impressed with the video quality. In fact, many times shows that I've recorded playback in black-and-white as the VCR appears to have difficulty locking onto the color.

Frankly, it's not worth the cost.

Summary: Toshiba W704
Review: My old VCR (a Magnavox) is 14 years old so a replacement was in the works when I saw this Toshiba. I recieved it, plugged it in and it stood there, flashing 'auto' at me. Within 5 minutes it had automatically set the time AND scanned all available channels. So far it has been a jewel and I would recommend it to anyone. The only thing I don't like, are the small buttons on the remote and the wording in the instructions. To record from the remote, one has to push two buttons and the instructions are not quite clear on this. Since I record very little, the SP and SLP are not an issue. It would be nice if it had LP though. Overall the machine is quite adequate and I would recommend it to anyone.
