Summary: just an average vcr
Review: I expected more. Minuses: The Jog/Shuttle dial doesn't work that smoothly. The front panel display is small and only displays the time. The remote is large (hard to hold in one hand) and the buttons are small and confusing. Record programming is non-intuitive and frustrating. One-touch-record and tracking controls are not on the remote (the buttons are on front of the VCR) Plusses: Reverse slow motion (thru Jog/Shuttle) Other features (such as universal remote, front A/V inputs, index and time search, and high-speed rewind) are fairly standard now days. Overall it's just average.

Summary: Saved me from buying a $40 Convertor+a $20 Universal Remote
Review: I have a TV which is not "cable-ready"--it does not display stations above channel 40. Oddly enough, the convertor box at my local wholesale club is priced $40.00 and I was ready to purchase it. Addtionally, I was in the market for a universal remote control for which I was willing to spend $20, but not more than that. These two items total $60. For an additional $40 I purchased this VCR which eliminates the need for both items plus it gave me VCR+ capabilities which I did not have previously. (The manufacturer states that the remote that comes with this VCR is compatible with the following Brands of TV: FISHER, FUNAI, GE, GOLDSTAR, HITACHI, MAGNAVOX, PANASONIC, PANASONIC-GA00, PHILCO, PHILIPS, QUASER, RCA, SAMSUNG, SANYO, SHARP, SONY, SYMPHONIC, & TOSHIBA. (I cannot vouch that it works with all of these, since I only own 2 TVs.) The remote has a button to select a CABLE BOX; a second one to control a TV; and a third to control the VCR.) Mine did not sound like a "747 taking off in my living room" and I am EXTREMELY sensitive to noises--to the point that they can trigger migraines. The customer's review which states that his did sound like "747" did not deter me from ordering since I would have promptly and without hesitation returned mine if mine did. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Summary: Pleasantly surprised
Review: I ordered the VCR from Amazon.com on Tuesday afternoon, and it arrived on Friday morning. While the unit doesn't seem as sturdy or solid as higher-end units, we've been very pleased. This thing's got about 1,000 features I'll never get around to using. We did try programming the timing for recording, and the proceedure was straightforward and simple. The best thing about this VCR? A price we just couldn't beat.

Summary: A great budget VCR
Review: I've owned this VCR for a year and a half now, and am still very happy with it. I use it's schedule feature to record my favorite programs to a set of tapes so I can watch my shows anytime I want. The remote that comes with it is a bit too big for my taste, even though I have quite large hands. The AV inputs have their own channels, which makes it easy to view anything you've hooked up to the A/V inputs. I have this VCR hooked up to my Surround Sound system, and it plays back cable and vhs tapes perfectly, with great sound (even though the VCR really doesn't have anything to do with the sound other than it's piping the sound from the coax. cable to the audio outputs on the back..). Very intuitive on screen menus, navigable with the up/down/left/right buttons (whose main purpose is for the ff/rew/play/stop functions). I like this VCR much better than the Sony my parents recently bought at a target store.

The only problem I am beginning to see is that when rewinding a tape from the end, sometimes the VCR will stop about halfway through, and I have to hit the rewind button on the remote again. I suspect this is the VHS Tape's fault, not the VCR's though.

All in all a great VCR that I would definetly buy again.

Summary: Great Vcr
Review: If you are buying this vcr for a home theater system like I did, you will be amazed at the wonderful picture AND sound quality you get from this machine! It even out-preforms my top-of-the-line vcr that I own. Quality for a decent price? You'd better believe it!

Summary: An amazing value machine
Review: The VCR is simple to set up and use. The remote is excellent, and the quality of recordings is outstanding. Its playback of commercially recorded tapes, when piped through my Sony home theatre setup, is as good as any high priced VCR that I have encountered. In addition its component video and audio inputs, and component and coaxial outputs allow the viewing of satellite or DVD component outputs on televisions with only a coaxial input, with superlative picture quality. Overall great value, and I am sure that I shall find other hidden delights in its use - after six weeks I am still thrilled with this bargain.

Summary: DON'T BUY SYLVANIA 2870LV
Review: This VCR has a 90 day warranty. On day 91 this VCR began destroying tapes. It's was cheaper to buy another one that to try to get it fixed. I now own a Panasonic which was rated best by Consumer Reports for fewest repairs needed.

STAY AWAY FROM THE SYLVANIA 2870LV!
