Summary: Does Panasonic ever lab-test it's products?
Review: 1) It plays stereo recordings fine, but I have many recordings that were made on mono VCRs. The PV-V4522's playback of mono recordings has this annoying high pitch sound in the audio. So mono stuff is unwatchable because that sound will drive you insane. I have to rely on my older PV-9662 to play mono videos :p

Anyone with the V4522, do you have this problem playing mono recordings too?

2) When making recordings with the PV-V4522, I have to make sure I press the TV/VCR button to turn this mode off, otherwise it records with these faint horizontal lines across the whole picture. I remember having this problem with a Panasonic VCR I had a long time ago (forgot the model).

3) It makes recordings with a severe vertical jitter on older tapes or over recordings done by another VCR, leaving you with a bad recording, but if I re-record over the same tape at the same speed, that recording will be stable. This is just a big hassle.

The PV-9662 doesn't have any of these problems, I can record with confidence with that old VCR. I sure wish they still made the 9662. The old saying is true, "They sure don't make'em like they used to". :(

Summary: For the price it is decent.
Review: Do not expect much reliability from this player. I have two of these vcrs for about three months now and I have not had any problems yet, they work fine. However their built quality is poor and they feel very flimsy, but for [the price] you cannot ask too much. If it breaks I will get a new one. I had a JVC before this one and it was way worse than the Panasonic. The loading mechanism in the JVC was terrible and some tapes kept getting stock in there. The loading system in the Panasonic is much smoother and it takes any tapes I throw at it. I have also another Panasonic which is 6 years old (it has a blue display instead than the green one) and it has a higher built quality than these new models. Unfortunately most electronic components today are designed and built to break easily in order to sale more units. Gone are those days where reliability was the most important aspect, it just isn't profitable anymore. Overall: GOOD to FAIR.

Summary: Great player, poor recorder - mucho problemos
Review: Has all the same qualites and additional problems of the Mono model 4022: While the universal remote works great, the keypad buttons aren't "intuitively" planned out. And while the vcr seems to have all the Panasonic features one wants, including all 3 recording speeds, the picture has noticeable flicker in SLP speed. Sound is great in Hi-Fi mode, but when recording in SLP music will sound warbly in mono mode (or on a separate mono vcr). Along with warbly music, if you record over something and play the tape in mono mode (or on mono vcr) you will hear the audio you recorded over! Panasonic customer support either apologize or deny problems exist.
When using the vcr to view tapes made with the vcr, a color bar runs up the TV screen's left side unless the vcr is moved away from other vcr's; however it won't do this with other tapes. VCR is also pretty loud, louder than the 4022, and occasionally makes a swishing sound. I returned vcr and had same problems with exchanged model.

Summary: Your electronic products need better descriptions
Review: How do you expect people to buy from you when you descriptions/specifications of your electronics aren't shown with the product? Now I have to go elsewhere and will probably buy from someone else.

Summary: Stop recording after a year of light use..Now it's a player!
Review: I bought this unit about year ago for ($$$). Worked as expected although the remote needs work. The record button is too close to the channel changer. The buttons are the size of tick-tacs but smaller. Self light button only works with top vcr controls and not tv or keypad. Auto time doesn't always work and manually setting the VCR+ features is a real pain and I do computer programming. It does have a power off memory incase of blackouts. My system stopped recording tv shows and so I checked the manual. Yes, the VCR has its record tab and indicates its recording on the proper cable channel. I just recorded a show last night so all I believe the heat just was to much for it (82 deg F.) I went through the online sites and I get the same "check your tabs and cables". I done that so its got to be electronics. Now I got a fancy player until I can get schematics to fix it. It's not worth sending back to the company.(Out of Warranty/ 90 days labor. I'm an amateur tech. I'll fix it.) Get one that's heat resistant or get a cooling fan for it.

Summary: Horrible picture
Review: I bought this VCR and hooked my cable through it. The picture I got from that was so horrible, even after making sure all my cables were good, that I didn't even bother trying a tape in it before I returned it. I would not recommend this product.

Summary: If you're lucky & get a good one it's fine
Review: I bought two of these. One has been ok but the second one would spit out any tape you fed it. Returned it immediately and got another one that did exactly the same thing. By then it was too late to return to the store so it's sitting on a shelf as a paperweight. So one of three worked. On another subject, the remote is awful - so I use an old "Tower" remote I got at Goodwill.

Summary: Not bad so far.
Review: I have not owned this VCR long, but the only beef with it is that it likes spitting tapes back at you sometimes. Other than that all my old movies look and sound better than ever and they were all taped in SLP mode. Here's my question: Is it just me or does this VCR spit out rented tapes way more than taped blanks? Every blank I've taped for my collection it, rarely spits out at me, but "previously viewed" or second hand, whatever, boxed originals especially from rental stores seem to spit back out multiple times? I think it has something to do with those tape rewinders they use. I've heard those things are not good for tapes. I just can't figure why all my taped movies are no problem, first shot and they are in. Second hand or rented ones, not good for this thing. I does sound like a 747 when rewinding, but I hear nothing when it's playing. Other than those few pet peeves, it's not bad. Who cares if it's noisy rewinding, as long as that doesn't happen when playing, it's cool. Who rents or buys VHS anymore anyway? DVD is way better if you own a quality player (I have a Toshiba I love! and Panasonic's DVD players are one of the best.) Any input on the above problem would be appreciated as I have no other explanation as to why this thing is so fickle about the tapes you put in.

Summary: Panasonic PV-V4522 4-Head HI-FI VCR
Review: I just received the unit and attached all the cables and powered up the VCR. For the money - it will do for what it's worth. The manuals are usless, and so is the tech support for the VCR.
My advice is - there are so many VCR's out there for more money, why invest in a VCR that you may keep for a few years.
