Rating: Summary: Poor Review: I've had mine for about 4 months and now the picture jumps as it seems the tape is dragging. I took out a tape and looked at it and it's been creased on the bottom. Not very good quality and it's ruined a few of my tapes. I say stay away
Rating: Summary: Noisy operation Review: It makes lots of noise as soon as the power is on, unlike the other Panasonic VCR I have. Also, it doesn't have LP mode, just SP & EP. The counter also doesn't appear on the pannel while rewinding, making it difficult to know where you are on the tape (unless you play with the remote control & see the counter number on the TV screen). I'm returning the unit!
Rating: Summary: Good quality Review: Its stange that other people were not lucky to get the decent result I have with this unit. This SONY SLV-N51 is much better then Toshiba W712 with picture quality for SP and EP VHS tapes. I highly recomend this inexpensive model or more expensive SLV-N71. I have been using it for the past 3 months and I am satisfied. Great picture quality, rewinds fine, very easy to use.
Rating: Summary: No problems, but should have more features Review: Now, personally, I think that I use my VCR quite often, since I'm putting off DVD's until I can get a DVD recorder for less than about $300, which could take a few years. So it seems somewhat odd that I haven't had problems with my VCR when other reviewers(who likely don't use their VCR's as much as I do)mention repair woes. Perhaps I got a later-production model with better quality. In any event, the picture is pretty good (better than a similarly priced RCA that I already own.) However, this unit lacks features like VCR Plus that the aforementioned RCA does have. I also prefer RCA's menu system (you can punch in numbers directly from the remote on the RCA; on the Sony you must hit Up/Down to select numbers for programming, etc. This is a chore, especially without VCR Plus.) But, so far, so good. I'll have to see if any problems arise in the future.
Rating: Summary: Back for another round... Review: Sony used to have a fine reputation for quality... but my last Sony VCR died after a year of medium level use. The old $0.39 part costs $200 to fix problem ;-).. I replaced it with an RCA that I love.I bought this model because junior is now of an age that he like his videos of trucks and bulldozers. The RCA rewinds ever so slowly. And we wanted a second VCR anyway. This model has performed solidly so far and rewinds super fast too. I'm a happy camper... but then, I was with the last Sony. If this one dies young, I'll be buying more RCA products and waiting for the rewind!
Rating: Summary: The AMC Pacer of the VCR world Review: This has to be the worst peace of electronic #@&! that I have ever bought. I have had two Sony VCR's in less than 6 months. The first one would not track and eat tapes when it rewinds, returned in and they gave me a new one. I had the second one for 110 days and it stop tracking on anything it recorded. Since its past the 90 days Sony told me that parts are covered but we all know it's the labor that cost. Please save yourself some money and time, do not buy any Sony VCRs
Rating: Summary: Nice VCR for the money Review: This is a nice and fairly inexpensive VCR. Because of my schedule, around 98% of what I watch has been recorded so I give my VCR a workout everyday. I'm just an average person, and I'm not trying to obtain a state-of-the-art home theater system. However, I'm particular about performance. I have been known to return three or four VCRs to the store before selecting the one I wanted to keep. I never owned a Sony so I cannot compare within the same brand. I bought a Sony once and returned it because the remote had microscopic buttons. This is not a problem with this model. Its picture and sound are great. It plays tapes recorded on my other VCR perfectly, which was not the case with my old VCR. The Sony was easy to set up. It rewinds and fast forwards lightning fast. So far, I have no complaints about performance. I do have some petty problems with it. I find the universal remote extremely irritating. The numerical buttons control the TV only if the TV is a Sony. Mine isn't so I have to use the channel up/down button. The play/ff/rr/pause control is actually one big circular button that is somewhat hard to deal with. The super fast ff/rr is a good feature, but it is too fast when zipping through commericals or when trying to stop at a certain point. I find programming the VCR for timer recording sort of annoying. It isn't hard, but I wish it was set up differently. I know it sounds like am am griping too much. I have no problems with the way this VCR performs. My complaints are personal preference issues. I definitely recommend this VCR.
Rating: Summary: I BOUGHT THIS VCR ACCORDING TO REVIEWS. GIANT MISTAKE Review: This is to spare everyone else out there the headache I have had with this particular VCR. Mine is 100% junk. Useless. I've had it less than three months and the tracking can't/isn't working. Or the heads aren't clean and believe me I've tried everything to get this machine up and running and ...but still huge, giant, fuzziness and streaks play throughout...they fade in and out and in and out...can you say GARBAGE? ...can't watch a single thing without losing your mind. I laugh when I see what amazing reviews this thing has gotten...they must work for Sony. Or they got real lucky. Or I got real unlucky but less than three months, it now has to be replaced. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY VCR. It will find it's rightful place in the world...a dumpster.
Rating: Summary: NICE PACKAGE LITTLE SUBSTANCE Review: THIS PRODUCT HAS GREAT ACCESSORIES, BUT AFTER THREE MONTHS THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TRACKING, ESPECIALLY WITH OLDER TAPES. THE RECORD FEATURE SEEM TO ALSO MALFUNCTION (I'M OFF TO THE REPAIR SHOP THIS WEEK!) THE REMOTE IS ALSO A BIT COMPLEX, BUT IF YOU LIKE GADGETS THE REMOTE IS A THRILL. THERE ARE A BETTER WARRANTIES FOR LOWER PRICE MODELS LIKE THIS ONE SO SCOUT AROUND CAREFUL AND IF YOU NEED TO SPEND FIFTY DOLLARS MORE --IT JUST MIGHT BE WORTH THE INVESTMENT. HAD I DONE THE RESEARCH PRIOR TO THIS PURCHASE I COULD HAVE SAVED MYSELF THE TROUBLE.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Intolerable Review: This VCR is absolutely terrible. I can hardly distinguish between shows recorded in the SP mode from the EP mode. They just look bad. Another annoying thing is with pre-recorded tapes. The auto tracking does not pick up the hi-fi track. I always have to adjust the VCR manually to get the hi-fi Stereo track. This is very annoying. Who cares that it rewinds pretty fast? The picture stinks and I always have to get up and adjust the tracking. What is going on with SONY? They used to make some of the best VCRs. I'm sorry but this VCR is junk
