Summary: Why it doesn't work on SECAM - L (FRANCE)
Review: To the folks who have had trouble using this unit for recording
(or viewing) SECAM - L tapes, THIS UNIT WON'T DO IT - PER SAMSUNG. Buried on page 18 of the Owners Manual it clearly states "*SECAM L (FRANCE) is not available on this VCR.
I called Samsung and the confirmed. If you want to do SECAM L (France) you need to step up to the SV7000-W VCR. Supposedly it's about the same price according to Samsung Cus.Svc. but so far the only price I got was $190 higher !!! I'm still looking.
The vendor I'm delaing with Elite Video recommended the Emerson
EWW7070 (which amazon offers too) but I don't think the specs are the same. I don't think much of Emerson VCRs either (had 2
other regular Emerson VCRs crap out) Hope this helps some of you.

Summary: Bad out of box experience
Review: Unfortunately the unit was defective right out of the box. When switched on, the motor made a loud noise, like it was racing.
Samsung's customer support was difficult to contact, and did not get back to me prior to several follow-up calls.

Furthermore, Samsung's website is arranged so that the nearest authorized service center appeared to be in suburban Baltimore - not very useful if one lives downtown in Washington, DC, and does not have a car. Further investigation showed that there are actually two repair sites in Washington, one in NE and the other in a Virginia suburb.

Samsung clearly has quality and customer service problems that will prevent it from overtaking its Japanese rivals in the near future.

Summary: Have access to tapes only available from Great Britain
Review: Universal players are hard to find and it is surprising to find out that people are not aware that many films are only in PAL format. Open up a world of movies and programs not available in the U.S.
This one has stood the test of time and has been available on and off for quit some time. The real use is not to use the VCR worldwide but to use it to view VHS tapes from the world. "Blott on the Landscape" and "Allo Allo" are just a couple that come to mind

Summary: A Piece of junk!
Review: We bought this item a few years back and have had nothing but trouble with it. For such an expensive piece of equipment it should last far longer than it has. We have had to have it repaired a number of times already and so could have bought a new one with the money we spent on it. We certainly do not recommend this product and will never buy another one from Samsung. When I complained to them, I got no satisfaction at all. It stopped working again yesterday.

Summary: Very decent worldwide vcr
Review: We have owned this vcr for almost 2 years now, and it is our "main" vcr, used for playing Pal(from Europe) and regular Ntsc tapes. We found that the receiver provides such sharp and vivid image, we use it as a receiver for the regular TV program as well (It looks way better than the built-in receiver in the Sanyo TV set). So it gets a lot of use and we never had any reliability problems. You may want to leave sufficient space around it for cooling, as it does generate a bit of heat. Some people may accelerate its demise by stacking dvd players, etc. on it. That is not a good idea.

People who remark on the quick wearout of the video heads probably use "head cleaning" products regularly. Such products are mostly scam, and at the least typically unneeded. The only "benefit" of their routine use is the ruination of the video heads. I have not had to clean the video heads yet on this machine, nor did I ever have to do so on the 2 other vcr's I own, and all have perfect picture quality after years and years of use.

The vcr does display whether you are rewinding or playing a tape, and there is a counter that shows elapsed time. In fact the built in display is rather informative.

The conversion quality from Pal to Ntsc is quite good, but one should not expect dvd quality from this technology. The unit does have some shortcomings: the input system setting can be difficult to adjust, the vcr itself is somewhat noisy (high pitched motor noise), and the manual is not all that helpful. Taken these factors into consideration, it still deserves a 4 star
