Summary: Best bang for the buck
Review: If you have DirectTV, you have to have this. But beware, you'll have to subscribe to the local channels ($6) and pay for TiVo service ($10) on top of your DirecTV bill. This is however the best buy for your buck.

Summary: Don't put it in your bedroom!
Review: It's a computer with a hard drive, running 24 hours per day. The fan inside the unit is quiet, but not so the hard drive itself. If you power down the unit at night, it can't download the program information via your telephone line. Fine features, but keep the Tivo in your living room, not your bedroom.

Summary: The Ultimate TV Accessory - Update
Review: My Jan.7 comments (below) still valid - like unit more the more I use it!! Most criticisms posted seem to boil down to (1)"Unit does not record cable or off-the-air broadcasts:" true, but this is offset by benefits of integrated box; you will probably find you watch non-satellite broadcasts less and less, and if they must be recorded a VCR will still do the job! (2) Bitching about limitations of warranty and cost of repairs: customer bought unit despite clearly stated warranty provisions, which are identical to those for 95% of TVs, VCRs, and similar electronic products (90 days labor; 1 yr. parts) ... Only problem I've had so far is occasional failure of daily phone calls to TiVo. Appears to have been fixed by inserting ",#034" as a dialing prefix, which I understand slows the modem down and helps overcome noisy telephone lines ... P.S. Rumor has it that Philips, Sony, and Hughes are stopping production of these units due to disappointing sales. DirecTV will produce a box under their brand label with some mostly useless new "features"; price will probably be considerably higher. If I didn't already have one, I would hurry to snap up one of the current units at the prevailing fire sale prices!! Finally, again, be sure to SHOP AROUND for the best price before you buy!!

Summary: You will not be disappointed! (Just do your homework first.)
Review: This machine is probably the single best reason to give up on your cable service and switch to DirecTV. And if you already HAVE DirecTV, you will get so much more out of it if you upgrade to this receiver, it's a no-brainer.

There seems to be a fair amount of confusion over exactly what a Tivo does, which ends up causing customer distress when expectations are incorrect or (worse yet) discount-store salespeople provide bogus & incomplete information.

For example: in an earlier review, Mr. Lambert bemoans the lack of a "dual-tuner" feature, preventing him from watching one program while recording another. I hope that since connecting the unit and exploring the features, he's realized that the DSR6000 *does* do exactly that! The confusion is most likely due to the fact that these units are sold with the older 2.0 Tivo software, which is UPGRADED AUTOMATICALLY (to 2.5) within a few days of service activation. Tivo regularly adds new features to the system, and each is better than the last.

Anyone who thinks that a Tivo is "just a fancy VCR" has not done their homework. The DSR6000 is an affordable entry into a completely different, far better way of watching TV.

Summary: Television's "Killer App"
Review: This device has had more impact on our television viewing habits than anything else.

The DirecTV/TiVo combo is the tightest, most elegant implementation of the TiVo system. The ability to record two different programs simultaneously via the device's dual tuners means that there are few if any shows missed. You can even watch a 3rd, pre-recorded show while the device records two more - all at once.

The TiVo software is unbelievably clever. With this system in place you can conveniently forget about TIME or CHANNELS - everything operates by the program. Simply pick which programs you wish to see and forget about it. Every time you sit down in front of the TV you will have a suite of perfect-for-you programming ready to watch.

You can also fast-forward through all of the commercials.

Another great aspect of this is that as you watch and "rate" programs the software makes assumptions about what sort of programs you would enjoy seeing but did not explicitly request. When it is idle and when it has recording space available it will record "suggestions" for you that you can watch or not any time.

Summary: TiVo fading into....
Review: I bought this appliance last week and as is my luck, the price has been reduced ..., AND on top of that I see today where TiVo is coming out with TiVo 2, the upgrade (with the ability to record on one channel as I watch and/or record another-the ultimate convenience) everyone wants and I held out two years for - but could not make my self hold out any longer.
I find this appliance to be relatively slow in response to commands from the hand control, something that is irritating after using Directv and or cable.
The small hand control is awkward for people with large hands, as I have, and key buttons are illogical placed causing many incorrect commands being sent to the appliance.

Summary: Once you go DirecTivo,........
Review: As a long time DirecTv user, I never thought much about Tivo.... until I got one. Actually the family wanted one, and I have to admit they made a good choice. With dual tuners, it's nice to be able to see one show and record another without having to look for a blank vcr tape. It's also nice to set it up to record your favorite shows all season long- never have to worry about missing an episode. The DirecTivo also eliminates battles over the tv, since we can record the shows the kids want to watch for them to view later. If you watch a recorded show, you can just fast forward past the ads too!

From what I understand, the Philips, Hughes, and Sony units are all pretty much the same- just some cosmetic differences and a better remote for the Sony. For the price difference and basically the same machine, I don't see paying up for the Sony.

I think once you get a Directivo, it'll change the way you view TV. If there's nothing good on, you can always pull up something on the Tivo. We started out with one and got another a week later. If you get additional Directivo units for other tvs in your house, you only have to pay DirecTv the standard ...mirror charge so it's a great deal.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!
Review: BUYERS BEWARE!!! Positive reviews on this and other websites are based on the TIVO service, not this product. THE PHILIPS DSR-6000 is a PIECE OF GARBAGE and THE COMPANY IS EVEN WORSE. I am in the process of returning my second one of these in less than 90 days. Even under warranty YOU have to foot the bill to ship it back to them. And even after shipping me a second defective unit, they refuse to give me a refund. And the real kicker is that they when you pay to ship the unit back to them, they will only send you a refurbished receiver. So if you are unfortunate enough to get a defective receiver (like most of you will be), you will only get a receiver that someone previously returned, and thus you as the consumer are stuck in the cycle of receivers that don't work - FOREVER - that is if you are lucky enough for them to have one to send you (because they mail the receivers they get to people who have previously made returns) - in my case they just don't have anymore. So I sent mine back to them, they ostensibly mailed mine to someone else, and I am left with nothing. Plus, try calling their customer service line to complain - I have NEVER waited less than an hour to talk to someone. I am in the process of pursuing a legal claim against Philips and Tivo - DON'T GET STUCK LIKE I DID!!!

Summary: Doesn't work with cable tv
Review: This unit only works with DirectTV, it does not allow you to integrate cable or air tv with the same system. Seems pointless if you want to be able to record multiple programs from both sources.
