Summary: 1 star because I can"t give it none
Review: 1. Does not have all the channnels correct

2. Privacy policy just changed and since I bought a lifetime subscription, I really do not have the leverage to do anything about future changes

3. Customer Service has not been very helpful, but they were polite

4. It keeps recording pay per view movies I have not ordered - 2 hours of previews. Only way to stop is to mess up my profile or turn the feature off.

5. It froze on me 2 weeks ago sometimes between bed and when I got home from work, the result was I missed some things that I really wanted to see. I should include that it was easy to fix...unplug and wait a few moments then it reset.

This is a new technology from a new and small company. I think this is somewhat to be expected in early generations. I would recommend that you hold off for the next generation or two, but if you want it now, I hope you do not have all the problems I did.

Summary: Tivo is expensive, but it works
Review: A Replay 60 hr unit was replaced with Tivo 60 hr unit. Both units are noisy -- during quiet moments in tv passage, you can hear the hard disk spin. So you have to turn up the volume accordingly.

An earlier version of Replay the hard disk runs when recording. For Tivo the hard disk is always spinning. In this day and age there is no reason why Tivo, Phillips couldn't command the hard disk go to sleep mode when not recording. That's why I opted for a 5 year warranty. Hard disks die eventually, and so it's a question of when.

The man-machine interface for Replay is superior to the Tivo -- it's more intuitive and easier to master. I decided to not subscribe to Tivo since at the time I got the unit there was a price change (...) for lifetime membership. As a consequence I manually setup to record programs of interest by entering channel, times, and frequency. It's a hassle, but I refuse to pay Tivo anymore money.

Whoever designed the Tivo man-machine interface oughta be hung by his/her toe nails. Tivo should take a lesson from Replay. On Tivo, if you pick the wrong recording to replay it's very difficult to stop it. And you can't label a recording so there is just generic info -- being able to label program name would be great. With Replay there is no additional cost for service so you do not have this problem.

I would have kept the replay, but after having to turn in the unit 3 times for repair (hard disk noise) I got a Tivo (noisy). However, I didn't know that Tivo had the same problem. It should be a no brainer to use quieter hard drives or to sound isolate the hard drive -- it's not rocket science. The problem is that with Replay you get a refurbished unit not a new one. So you know that Replay unit had problems. Perhaps Tivo has the same policy -- you get refurbished unit. Maybe I should go back to VCRs and have DSS programmed to record on VCR?

Summary: I love my TiVo
Review: After getting the Philips HDR612 TiVo our TV viewing experience has changed for the better! It is very easy to pick your favorite shows and have Tivo automatically record them. The previous reviewer who had trouble scheduling a recording must have been a Microsoft plant. The TiVo has a very simple and easy to use interface. We absolutely love it. Everyone I show it to ends up buying one.

Summary: TiVo
Review: After having an opportunity to test the 60 hour box, several things have become clear. First, sixty hours is finally plenty of time for recording everything that I possibly want to watch, (if you watch more than 60 hours, then priorities probably need to shift) plus all of the TiVo recommendations as well. One thing to keep in mind is that 60 hours is at the lowest quality, and if you're like me and want high quality recordings, you get less time. In general, the TiVo service is easy to use and reliable. With this box, response time seems to have improved significantly. The downside? The box is as bulky and heavy as previous models. I would like to see companies start to develop smaller recorders on the size level of VCRs. TiVo definitely makes the best of the personal TV recorders. Replay is also recommended, but steer away from the Microsoft products for now until they can make improvements to what essentially should be called a "beta."

Summary: Over hyped vcr
Review: An over hyped vcr. An over priced vcr. An under performer. Let me explain. I tried to set it to record my favorite shows through the season pass function. It did not work. It keeps thinking I also want it to record syndicated re-runs of those shows on other channels, and those take up too much space and interfere with some other programs. There is no way to differentiate. It just doesn't understand. This has turned out to be a case of technology being too dumb to be functional. I am going back to my trusted vcr.

Summary: Without TiVo, what's the point of TV?
Review: I bought one of the early models of TiVo, and added drive space to make it a 110 hour unit. I wouldn't bother watching TV without it. It really is everything it promises. I don't know what time a lot of my programs come on, or what day of the week, I just watch them when I feel like watching them. I have a one year old daughter, and I would especially reccomend TiVo to new parents. Without the ability to pause, or just stop and come back to it later, a new parent can't expect to watch anything all the way through.

Setup may be a bit complex, but once it's in place, it is simple to operate. My mother in law can figure it out when she comes to town. She can't figure out our X-10 remote control lights, or her own e-mail, but she can set TiVo to record her programs and figure out what she wants to watch. If she can do it, anyone can.

We use our TiVo so much we are planning on getting one for the little TV in our bedroom.

Summary: Life Changing
Review: I bought the HDR112 but is the exact same product as the 612. It was the greatest decision I have ever made. There's no buyer's remorce with TiVo. I've had it for 5 months now and I don't know how I ever lived without it.

Summary: Tivo Rocks
Review: I have been using Tivo since the very first unit's were shipped. This is my Wife's favorite piece of electronic equipment, my 8 year old daughter runs the device, it's the cleanest interface yet delivered on a piece of electronics. I now have two.

Never miss a show, stop to listen to your significant others without missing anything. Catch those late night shows without being up late.

...No one who has ever used TiVo would EVER send it back.
