Rating: Summary: Ideal for households with children Review: Picture this - You think the kids have gone to bed, and you settle down to watch your favorite prime time show (the second part of last week's show), and you hear kids running around upstairs. OR You are watching TV and it's at that critical point where you have to hear everything, and your little one needs some help tying their shoes, getting a snack, etc. All you have to do is pause TiVo, handle the situation, and restart it where you left off! As long as you weren't gone more than 30 minutes, you're in good shape. I'm more patient with the little ones, they get more of my attention and focus, and everyone gets what they want. And then there is the fact that it solves the problem of providing age-appropriate television for my kids. While you're watching shows that have been stored, you can record something else in the background. This is very useful at dinner time when I'm trying to get dinner ready, and everyone wants to watch TV. The shows that are available then are not ones that I prefer them to watch, but the ones that they do like from daytime PBS, Nick Jr., etc. are already off the air. So, I have TiVo save 5 or 6 different shows from different stations during the day, and they pick one or two shows out of that group to watch, depending on their mood. While they're watching those, I'm saving my show without them having to see it, and they're getting to choose what they want to watch, which is empowering to them. My 5-year old recognizes the names of all his shows now, and operates the remote control by himself, including deleting the show when it's done. And, for children, basic quality is more than acceptable, since they're used to looking at video tapes that they've seen time and time again.
Rating: Summary: Tivo, its ALMOST there... Review: I have had the Tivo for over one month. While it is easily the most revolutionary home product since betamax, it does have some drawbacks. 1. not HDTV compatable 2. no dolby digital ins or outs 3. channel switching not great with echostar (dish) (if its important, program the dish also) 4 service is pricey... If these are the alpha units, the next generation will be awesome. Bottom line, It ['s not bad]...
Rating: Summary: The best purchase I ever made Review: I bought a TIVO 30meg system about 3 months ago. I have been nothing but pleased with it. The quality of the recording is excellent even at the basic level which provides 30 hours of program storage. The controls are intuitive. It is easy to do basic "house cleaning" to keep the number of programs being stored in order. Most of all it is fun to use. Before purchasing I was concerned about the quality of picture recorded at the basic or least dense level frankly on my TV (standard color model) I can not tell the diference between the basic storage and most advanced and both are great. The freeze frame gives great quality. Sometimes I will disect a music video, comercial, or program trailer to see what makes them click. Again amazing ... If there were a sixth star I'd give it to this product. Also the automated program guide it is great and very flexible. Even my wife, a "techno hater" likes the system and the program guide.
Rating: Summary: TiVo is Great! Review: This is a wonderful product for busy people. If you even have just two or three tv shows you watch every week, this gadget will make your life simpler. With a VCR, it's a chore to keep track of videotapes, moving program schedules, etc. TiVo makes all of this easy. The remote control and on screen programming are incredibly easy to use and well thought out. It even sets the clock itself! The slogan sounds trite, but it's true...with TiVo, there's always something on. And it's on when you want it to be, and it's easy to skip commercials. I watch a lot of sports, and it's great for that. The TiVo programming service is worth it, too. If you have the money up front, go for the lifetime membership.
Rating: Summary: No Comparison at all, TiVo is the winner Review: First I decided I needed a new VCR, then I learned about TiVo and Replay. I went and tried out TiVo, which up until recently, was only available at a store. TiVo blew everything out of the water. TiVo has more users and amazing customer service. I had a question after I was up and running and they answered the phone in 3 minutes! The 1-800 number for dial in great. I understand Replay doesn't offer this and it can be of great expense if you don't live near a local dial in number. TiVo is working with the biggest companies to provide an amazing future for the company and the machine...among them are AOL and Time Warner! Because has 30 hours of time, you can actually use the machine like it was intended, you couldn't survive with less space! I actually considered Replay, but I didn't know anyone who had it and I didn't want to get stuck with a technology that may be gone in 6 months. TiVo is the right pick and Amazon had a great price and great service. Speedy delivery too! Go TiVo!
Rating: Summary: Best New Consumer Electronics Product Review: This is the best new product to come along in a long time. It puts mw incharge of my television. I could never go back to watching TV without my TiVo. Buy one, you'll love it.
Rating: Summary: Tivo, the greatest invention of all time. Review: I have not found a better idea then tivo. I have always had trouble with vcr's. My VCR would be set to tape something since I'd be away from my house for two days. I came back and nothing happend and I lost my show. I was able to see a re-run of the show 3 years later after hearing the whole plot from all my friends. It was so annoing having to watch every replay every day, until I saw an episode that I missed. BUY TIVO. BUY THE 30 HOUR. Tivo is the future. This will be bigger then the post-it, it is amazing.
Rating: Summary: A good ideas but ... Review: Three TiVo's later I've finally ordered a Replay TV. The TiVo is a fine machine, when it works, but is hobbled by one of the flakiest and most trouble prone modems ever attached to a piece of consumer electronics, and a system of setting up and customer service that takes 45 minutes just to find the time of day. Living in an apartment building with a noisy phone line I had the good fortune to burn out two modems, each lasting about 48 hours. When my third machine turned out to be already registered to an account that had been suspended I gave up and ordered the Replay. Still -- while it worked it pointed me in the direction of some great movies. Great price too ... luckily Circuit City tell me that Phillips will take back any returns, no questions aksed -- maybe they know something we don't?
Rating: Summary: Welcome to the Tivolution! Review: Wow! I've had my Philips TiVo unit since December (my Christmas present to myself) and I have been quite impressed with it and think this is the greatest entertainment device since DirecTV. I have the 30 hour unit which gives me a lot of room of programming. I generally record movies under the Best Quality setting and other programming under the other settings. The other features I like are the Season Pass, the ability to pause live television and video quality and sound. The Season Pass feature enables me to never ever have to worry about having a tape in the vcr to tape programming or setting the timer In my life, I don't have the time to spend worrying about videotape. Being a movie buff and a sports nut, the pause button comes in handy frequently when watching live television. One thing that I've done while watching sports is rewinding back to catch some of the action, thus avoiding commericals. And finally the video/sound quality is outstanding. I have my TiVo hooked up to my home theatre system and the sound quality is not altered. The drawbacks of the TiVo unit are trivial in my eyes, but I will point them out for the benefit of others who have DirecTV. If you have a DirecTV system or other DSS, you will find that it will take quite some time for the unit to index the channels/programs when initially setting it up. Patience is necessary. Second, do not ever turn off your DSS receiver. This will cause the TiVo unit to freeze the next time you attempt to use it. I have no regrets with my decision to purchase the Philips TiVo unit and highly recommend it. You can finally control television instead of it controlling you.
Rating: Summary: The best part of my entertainment system... Review: I bought my TiVo back in January and it continues to amaze me how incredible it is. I'm sitting on the couch watching Friends last night. It's five minutes into the show and my roommate calls. I pause the show...He asks me if I'm watching friends, I say yes, he asks me to hold up for him...he'll be home in ten minutes. I rewind the show to the beginning, leave it on pause, and wait for my roommate. At 8:15 we start watching the show, skip all the commercials, and are done by 8:35. And it hits me how this would have been impossible last year. And then, we watch Northern Exposure, which TiVo automatically records every day while we're at work. I'm not even sure when it's on or what channel. I don't have to know. Tonight? TiVo recorded Waking Ned Devine a few nights ago because it thought I might like it. TiVo has definitely changed the way I watch TV. I'm getting to see better shows, watch them whenever I want, and skip all the commercials.
