Rating: Summary: Replay TV Better Review: There is one reason why Replay TV is better and that is because you can connect to the service via broadband. As the most sophisticated and tech savy people have broadband, this oversight by TIVO is a real slight to us.
Rating: Summary: TiVo Rocks!!! Review: This is a superb machine. I bought an upgraded Series 2 tivo at www.weakness.com. The unit runs like a pro, and yes you do need a land based phone line to set it up. The unit does have an s-video port, contrary to a other users comments. If you love tv at your control do yourself a favor and get one. Also note : if you have directv look for the directv/tivo receivers.
Rating: Summary: love product, hate the service Review: I loved my tivo til today. It was great catching all of these shows i miss cuz i go to bed early. and when there is nothing on tv, i have plenty to watch. that was fine until tonight. less than 6 months after i bought my tivo, it is dead. so, i called tivo customer service. they proceeded to tell me to unplug the unit and wait 2 minutes and plug it back in. did this and waited 2 more minutes after plugging it back in. nothing. in fact i did this twice and still nothing. i was then trasferred to somebody else who offered me a refurbished unit for $99. not happy!!! i wanted to know who i could write to about this, i was transferred to a level 2 person. they proceeded to offer me it for $79, that was the best they can do. they also told me that this doesn't happen very often. i told them that it must if they have all of these refurbished units that they are willing to sell for $99. if you go the their website anybody can get one for that price. oh, if i do buy a brand new unit, i have to pay the lifetime fee again. i lose that too. i paid over $600 for this unit (including the lifetime fee) and this is what i get for customer service??? they don't even offer to ship it back at their cost!!! their warranty is 90 days P&L, 1 year for parts only. where are the parts? they aren't even trying to fix it for me!!! service sucks!! take your chances!!!
Rating: Summary: Incorrect product description Review: I had previously used my sister's DSS Tivo, and I love the product. However, you should know of a few incorrect statements in the Amazon product description:1) The unit does not have an S-video input. 2) The unit does not have a composite video input - just a simple RCA video input. I have a digital cable satellite box that only outputs to composite video and RF coax. Having to settle with the RF coax when the composite video provides a higher quality signal was disappointing...
Rating: Summary: The TIVO Real Deal Review: Ok here are all the things that no one is going to tell you about TIVO. Don't get me wrong, I love my TIVO but here are some things I had problems with when I bought it: 1) YOU NEED A PHONE LINE TO SET TIVO UP - Ok this one may not seem like a big deal, who doesn't have a phone line in their house right? ME!!! There is a segment of the population that don't have land lines and I'm one of them. I have two cell phones & WIFI but no phone. I had to take the TIVO over to a friends house to download all the updates just to use it for the first time. Big pain in the neck. Also after you download everything you can't unplug TIVO for 4 to 8 hours or you will have to go though the hour set up again. 2) Even though the box has a big sticker on it saying "Broadband Ready!!" it's not - All the documentation on-line says you need 4.0 or higher. Well I had 4.0.1 shipped to me, but after an hour of trying to get the WIFI adapter to connect I called tech support and they told me my software needed an update before I could connect. So having 4.0 or above does not guarantee network connectivity. 3) Connect to the TIVO downloads a couple of times after you first set up TIVO- Even though it seems that you have downloaded all the updates there still might be more for you to download. It took three attempts for TIVO to get my channels correct for my cable service. Nothing is more frustrating than realizing you have a hour of QVC and not the new Simpsons. 4) For wireless connection buy the Linksys WUSB11 [ASIN: B00005AW1H] When they say this is the recommended wireless adapter they mean it. I tried two of my other adapters just to see if they would work and I got nada. It's worth it and it works the first time (at least it did for me). That's all I can think of right now. The TIVO is great, better than I even could hope for but it's not a totally smooth ride...yet.
Rating: Summary: BEWARE! DirecTv users MUST READ Review: We were quite excited to receive our Tivo, but it wasn't until AFTER we'd paid the "lifetime fee" on the machine that we discovered a MAJOR problem. Apparently, our DirecTv box does not have a serial cable connection so we had to use the Infrared (IR) set up (basically two little prongs that stick out in front of the IR window on the DirecTv box to "beam" the signal--as opposed to it going directly through a serial cable connection between the two machines). We have roughly a 70% margin of error (i.e., FAILURE RATE) in changing the channel. We've used every troubleshooting tip suggested by Tivo, but none have improved the situation (including one that involves building a cardboard "tent" around the prongs--simply lovely for interior decorating. When we received this gift (through Amazon), the combined DirecTv/Tivo machine was not available so we were not able to return the machine and "upgrade" (which we'd considered doing before we actually gave in and paid the $300 "lifetime of the machine" fee). If you have DirecTV, DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE unless you are SURE that you have the ability to connect via serial cable. We look forward to one day seeing what is supposed to be so "great" about Tivo, but for now we are left wanting to go "Office Space" on our machine. Hope you have better luck!
Rating: Summary: TIVO Rocks the free world. Review: I do not think my wife and I could communicate without Tivo. We are always talking during a show and we either get upset or miss a lot of details. The Pause live tv as well as simply watching TV on your schedule saves us the headache of dealing with any of this.
Rating: Summary: HORRIBLE SUPPORT AND USE...TIVO SO MUCH BETTER =( Review: I bought the replay unit a few weeks ago and I'm so sad that I did...My was defected and I tried to get support, which is HORRIBLE! I checked my friend's TIVO, and noticed it's SOOOO MUCH EASIER to use and he's never had a problem. I heard a hype about REPLAY so I bought it, and now am very sad I did. Learn from my misfortune, GO TIVO...not Replay...this piece of junk! =C
Rating: Summary: Service is required Review: Contrary to the reviewer comments of Jan 2003, Tivo service is required to do any kind of recording with the unit, inlcuding manual if you have version 2 or later. Tivo made a change to all units after version 1.3 to ensure that all later units must have the Tivo service to work. 1.3 units were "grandfathered" and can manually record shows.
Rating: Summary: Can't Live Without It! Review: Tivo is the greatest thing that has happened since DVD's! Get a season pass to record all of your favorite shows and then you can save them to a tape! Also you can set up a wishlist(e.g. a show with your favorite actor/actress) and it will automatically record it. My only complaint is that you can't change the channel if your recording something, and you can with a simple VCR. But besides that it's great.
