Description:
Schoolchildren discuss their impressions of God, the afterlife, and religion, while knowledgeable adults (teachers, ministers, a rabbi) put their comments into perspective in this 46-minute video. The children, ages 6 to 12, come from a wide range of racial and ethnic backgrounds and go to private schools in New York City, Kentucky, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The documentary makers frame their work with a series of questions: "When do you pray?", "What happens when you die?", etc. The kids' thoughts range from simple to complex, traditional (reciting The Lord's Prayer) to downright philosophical (angels are expressions of God's thoughts). The general questions, as well as the specifics of the children's stories (a 9-year-old recalls viewing his uncle's body; a girl remembers when her dog almost died), provide good starting-off points for discussions in the home, church, or school setting. --Kimberly Heinrichs
