Summary: One of the Greatest Motion Pictures of All-Times!
Review: I too could never give this movie anyhting less than five stars. It ranks with BEN HUR as one of my two favorite movies off All-Time. Yes, even above the Star Wars Films. In my oppinion, Charlton Heston played Moses the way Moses should have been played - powerful and majestic and able to stand up to anyone or anything. In reading the Bible, this is how I would have pictured Moses - not as the simpering wimp as portrayed in the animated turkey, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. Yul Bryner portrays Ramese to Biblical perfection - vilanous and calculating with a hardening heart. This movie is very adherent to the Bible and History, having been based on research taken from Antiquity and the Scriptures themselves. This is evident in that there is mention made of the body of Joseph being carried to rest in his own land. One question. Did Moses lead his people to the Promised Land? The answer is, in fact, no! Just as in the Bible, at the end of the film, Moses tells Joshua that HE is to lead the Children of Israel into the Promised Land. The fact that it was filmed in Egypt lends an even greater degree of authenticity to the film. On television, this film has been a Holy week tradition for as long as I can remember and will probably be one long after that. I would recommend it to anyone. For me, there is but Moses and his name is Chuck!

Summary: The Quintessence of Movies
Review: This movie is beyond comparison. It is the greatest story ever told, with some of the best acting, scenery, and even special effects that I have ever seen. I have been watching this movie even since I was a little girl, and each time I see I am more and more amazed by it. You don't see the heavy dramatic, compelling acting in the movies of today as you do in this movie, and I mean it as a compliment, because it just draws you in. The length as never been a bother to me, since I am by no means bored when watching it, in fact, I dread the moment it does. Kids should watchthis positive movie and be influenced by it. Adults and teens should see it and take in its glory, for they won't see movies of that caliber today. This movie exemplefies Old Hollywood in all its power with actors like Heston, Brynner, and Anne Baxter. You don't have to be religious see this, just have an appreciation for drama, tragedy, and triumph.

Summary: A Film You Will Remember For The Rest Of Your Life
Review: A very spiritually uplifting movie following the life of Moses. It is a long film but the story is so compelling that five hours goes by very quickly. The sets are some of the most spectacular of all time. The special effects are marvelous, especially when you consider this movie was made about 45 years ago. The story is the thing that ultimately carries the film and it is one of the best stories in the Bible. This give an excellent picture of the tribulations and sacrifice of Moses. This is much better than the Prince Of Egypt cartoon which tended to portray Moses as more of a rich teenager and the special effects are far better in this movie. Furthermore, this ensemble consists of many film legends. See if you can get that many stars together on one set today without egos clashing. This is an epic that once you watch it, you will always remember it.

Summary: Good Effects, But Some has a very Little Chance of Happening
Review: The effects are really cool, especially for being a 50's movie. But some of it-like already meeting Joshua (who was going to be a leader later) and the royal Egyptian falling in love with Moses when everybody found out that he was a Hebrew.

And also why have an about 5 hour movie and putting in tons of details-especially of how Moses found a wife-when it could only be 2 hours.

Summary: Superb DVD Release
Review: Having just purchased my first DVD player, I decided I'd break it in with a few titles on display in the store. When I saw "The Ten Commandments", I figured it might be nice to have and watch this Easter-weekend perenial without commercials for a change. From the moment Mr. DeMille appeared in the movie's prologue, I nearly fell out of my chair; the clarity and color of this DVD release are overwhelming! I was compelled to jump throughout the disc to sample the many justifiably famous sequences and was awed by the tremendous quality of this DVD--sharp and crisp edges, deep and natural tones. I saw the fine re-release print in 1989, but it pales in comparison to this DVD. I commend Paramount for the great care that must have gone into this remarkable restorative effort. This epic is why DVD technology was invented!

Summary: Overlong, but it could have been a lot worse.
Review: The Ten Commandments isn't bad, but it would have been a lot better if they had shaved of about an hour. The story works fine, but I think that the writers tried to put in just a little too much. The Book Exodus comlete plus a sort of Prince of Egypte just doesn't fit into one movie. That said it managed to keep my attention reasonably well for the first hour en again for the last. The middle part had my fingers itching on the fast-forward button, but I managed to restrain myself. The effects that supposedly simulate an Egyptian building site are ridiculous and make one long for Quo Vadis, but the actors do their best to make it all work and the whole style of the movie is truly epic. Maybe it would have beeen better to make two separate movies instead of one. There is material enough and it wouldn't have become a bore halveway.

Summary: Ahead of it's time. . .
Review: This movie was way ahead of it's time. 1956 was the year and the special effects are awesome! Not to mention the fact that this is the greatest story EVER told!

Summary: Buy It Now and Rid Yourself of the VHS.
Review: The DVD adaptation of the Ten Commandments is simply wonderful. The technicolor really comes out in the DVD version particularly at the crossing of the Red Sea. Of course, the story is wonderfully acted by Yule Brenner and Charleton Heston. If you have home theater, the sound really comes through nicely. By far, this is my favorite DVD. I only wish they had added more extras. Production notes would have been a great add-on. One interesting thing, is to look at the the three trailers from the diffent decades. Take a look at what the movie producers thought might hook each succeeding generation. We go from a scholarly approach in the 50's to an action approach in the last trailer. Buy it.
