Summary: outstanding in a sense you can feel..
Review: i have seen this movie many times and i was a cristian and losing faith and after i seen this movie brought me back to the Faith.the cast was outstanding to the brim and although some scenes were kind of rushed a little it was a brilliant work of art!The one thing i remember the most was JESUS' eyes they kind of added to the part of showing the sad and loving part of the character.maybe the more human part of him was when he told his stories it kind of moves you..although some flaws it should be viewed by all(in my opinion)at least once .

Summary: Extraordinary acting and characterization
Review: Biblical themes are a stock of the film genre, but Jesus of Nazareth is unique. There is genuine character development (a few outstanding examples being those of Peter, Judas, Pontius Pilate, and Mary Magdalene), rather than the flat-voiced depictions of awe alone that are hallmarks of the biblical epic. Of course, probably no film in history ever had the combination of outstanding actors here! Though the rather reserved and ascetic fashion in which Jesus is depicted may not appeal to some (though it does to me:), the depiction of Jesus as fully human, as opposed to that in some other feature films, is powerful. For example, the scene where a disapproving Peter scorns Jesus' having dinner with Matthew includes an exquisite sequence of the parable of the prodigal son - and the silent pain when Jesus is asked by Judas, "do you need a man like me?" speaks reams. Though the plot is true to the scriptures, it blessedly develops areas without restriction to the gospel texts. Several notable examples are the depiction of interplay between Barrabas and Judas; the character of Zera influencing Pontius Pilate; and the highly logical scene of Joseph and Nicodemus arguing Jesus's case before the Sanhedrin. Characterization and acting here are unmatched for any biblical film - and for most films in any genre.

Review: The Jesus Christ in this film isn't much like the Jesus that I know. The Jesus Christ in this movie, played by Powell, lack emotion, feeling and compassion. The movie it factually correct and done very well in that sense. The directors were too pre-occupied with making a movie that was directly from the bible that they forgot the very nature of Jesus. The Jesus who was filled with compassion. The crucifiction seemed like it was unreal. I give this film 4 stars because of how factual it was but it did lack character in Jesus Christ.

Summary: revise my previous review - somewhat disappointing
Review: This disk is said to be dual sided, so two such disks should have the capacity for a six and one half hour program like this. However, the images from this program are very soft (some would say "out of focus"). This can be partially compensated by raising the detail control on the video display. There are also motion artifacts arising from the preprocessing and the movement of the film in the projector (telecine) gate. These artifacts are not very annoying though.

Summary: DVD version disapointing
Review: I am dismayed to see this DVD version of such an excellent movie. The producers have seen fit to squeeze 6.5 hours of video onto just two DVDs. The result is a very soft (some say 'out of focus') product which displays sgnificant motion artifacts from an overly agressive preprocessing step. The only solution I know of would be for the company to offer to take back these DVDs and put the movie onto the three disks that such a fine production deserves.

Summary: "Are you the son of God?"
Review: I was five years old, when I saw "Jesus of Nazareth" at first. Since then I saw roughly fifty times. Zeffirelli' movie is really "The greatest told in the world". The fascinating Jesus-movie, with fascinating actors, with fascinating Maurice Jarre (the best), and with fascinating Zeffirelli. Robert Powell is the embodiment of Christ.The best Jesus in the filmhistory.(And of course Willem Dafoe) Olivia Hussey (oh my God!)is the perfect Mary.(And She was the perfect Juliet) Rod Steiger as Pontius Pilate is brilliant. Anthony Quinn as Caiphas is powerful. And Laurence Oliver(Nicodemus), and Anne Bancroft(Mary Magdalane), and Michael York(John the Baptist), and James Mason (Joseph of Arimet),and...but!the greatest is Ian Holm as Zerah. Simply gruesome. Zeffirelli, who directed the "Brother sun, sister moon" and "Romeo and Juliet", made the masterpiece. A six-hours Jesus-biography: wonderful, touching, and large-scale. My second favourite film.

Summary: Jesus is reborn, once again
Review: This very long film on the life of Jesus is outstanding in the genre. We all know the story. So the director has to be slightly more creative. His main intention is to link together the characters and give them some depth, so that they become more human, more motivated one way or the other, bad or good. The story hence gets some weight and humanity. We must not forget it is the story of the son of man, as well as that of the son of God. But, the final scenes, the crucifixion and the resurrection, seem to me less tense, less dense, less inspiring than the rest of the film. We are expecting the various declaration of Christ on the cross, and I don't think they are all there. But, what is more, we are so used to all the marvellous Passions produced in a way or other by so many composers, and Bach first of all, that I find the music trite and I do not feel the intensity of the suffering and of the marvellous end that we find in the classical, or even less classical oratorios. It is true the competition with those, with J.S. Bach, is kind of difficult, but I am sure the director could have done better. But the rest , five hours, of the film is so marvellous that we will always remember the coming to Jerusalem or John the Baptist. Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, Universities of Paris IX and II.

Summary: "Jesus Of Nazareth" best movie of all time!
Review: "Jesus Of Nazareth" is the best movie of Jesus I have ever seen. This movie really touches one's heart and really moves you as a Christian. All of the actors in this film are great, but their are two that stands out. Robert Powell's potrayal of Jesus is just excellent. The acting was powerful, and he really made himself like The Son of God. Not only that, his physical features is uncanny to those pictures we see of Jesus. I believe he was destined to play Jesus and I haven't seen anyone come close to the kind of acting I have seen with Robert Powell. Michael York's potrayel of John The Baptist is really powerful as well. I can see the passion of John the Baptist in York, as his rendition of John the Baptist comes to life. I can't dismiss the meeting of Jesus and John at the river, powerful stuff. Although, this movie is a very good movie there are some inaccuracies I would like to point out. Like the tax collector Matthew was sought out by Jesus and not the other way around. Jesus knew the name of Matthew, and this movie has Jesus asking for his name. The death of Joseph is not recorded in the gospels, but it is a good guess nevertheless. Mary Magdalene was never recorded as being a prostitute, but was one that was possesed by several demons in which Jesus exorcised them. Judas was possesed by the devil and driven by his own greed in which he handed Jesus over to the Sanhedrin, but the movie has him do it for the best interest of Jesus(to prove himself before the Sanhedrin), and not to fulfill his own greedy nature. And after the encounter with Pontius Pilate, Jesus was sent to Herod to be judged, this would of been an interesting encounter to have seen on screen. There are other things the producer could of added to this movie, like the temptation from of Christ in the desert, the calming of the storm, Jesus walking on water, turning water to wine, the earthquake and the tearing of the curtain in the temple right after his death on the cross, and the ascension to heaven after the resurrection. These scenes if added to an already great film would of made this film even more powerful. And it would of been like seven hours long, but I wouldn't mind sitting through it anyway. This movie does emphasize the teachings of Christ and presented by Powell with passion and clarity, that I think is the best part of the movie. The cruxifiction of Christ is a very moving element. When He was flogged, I really felt the pain he was going through and of course the crown of thorns placed on his head. When he was nailed to the cross and the cross was lifted from the ground, I can see the agony that Christ went through. Anyway, this movie is one of the greatest movies of all time, especially if you are a believer, and I recommend this movie for all to see. Hopefully it can awaken those who don't belive in Him to His truth of eternal life.

Summary: A Wonderful Portrait of Christ
Review: I really enjoyed this movie. Robert Powell does a marvelous job of portraying Jesus. He captures the tenderness and compassion, and also the righteous indignation of Christ. Sometimes I thought he was a little bit too serious. He could smile more often. Powell is joined by a great cast of actors such as James Mason (Joseph of Arimathea), Laurence Olivier (Nicodemus), and Anne Bancroft (Mary Magdalene). Christopher Plummer does a great job of acting as Herod as a weak and lust-driven king. The women playing Herodias and Salome did a great job of depicting them as conniving, power-hungry people seething with hatred for John the Baptist. I also really liked the portrayal of Simon Peter by James Franciscus. The acting is great all-around. There were some things that I would have liked to see however. Jesus is depicted as carrying the cross by Himself when He was actually assisted by Simon of Cyrene. I also wished the resurrection scenes would have been longer. The movie ends rather abruptly. In addition, the movie adds some fictional characters and fictionalizations of the biblical text. There is a character named Zera (played by Ian Holm) who acts as a representative of the religious leaders who helps to convince Judas to betray Christ. Barabbas (played by Stacy Keach) is seen as a Zealot who initially seeks to follow Jesus but is sorely disillusioned when Christ helps a Roman centurion. Judas is seen as betraying Christ because he is disappointed with Christ and he wanted to set up a situation so that Christ would assume the role of conquering Messiah. These were some interesting additions to the biblical account. In spite of all this, I really enjoyed this movie and I highly recommend this movie as one of the best portrayals of Christ in video or DVD.

Summary: THE Movie of Chist's life!
Review: This is one of the most remarkable and moving films you will ever see. Not enough can be said for Robert Powell. I truly believe that he was guided from above for this role!The supporting cast is supurb. John the Baptist is full of conviction and to be marvelled. You truly feel that you are watching Christ as he lived! Given that the recently televised CBS movie was such a bad joke (Jesus as self doubting fool)I would have to question the motives of the producers. I hope that people will be drawn again to Jesus of Nazareth-THE definitive story of Christ on film.
