Review: In my opinion, you can't go wrong with anything from Petrucci or Dream Theater. I have seen this video from a few years ago and can't wait to see what they do with the DVD.

Review: John Petrucci is an awesome musician, and teacher. I've played guitar for 16 years, and I own an army chest full of how-to-play guitar books, CDs, and videos, and Rock Discipline is one of them. My little brother picked up the guitar and I was passing on what I learned from J.P.'s video to him and went ahead and let him have the VHS and I bought the DVD, and this was about a year ago, and I still like to go through and pick out things to practice from Rock Discipline. I like to play different styles of music, and even though the title may imply one genre, what you can learn from this video/DVD you can apply to any style. He'll not only give you material to practice, he'll show you how to manage your time wisely. There is a lot of practice material covered, including warm up exercises, and both left and right hand exercises. This is the one instructional video/DVD that I own that I'd recommend buying if you were to own only one, whether you are just starting out, or if you've been playing for a while. I hope John comes out with a second instructional recording, I'd definately check it out.

Review: John Petrucci, the guitarist of the progressive rock band dream theater REALLY puts it out on this DVD. 2 of the most useful hours of my life came from this DVD, i was able to improve my speed, dexterity, and most importantly, my chops. This DVD is a definite must buy, and if you don't you'll be stuck with other no-up-to-par instructional videos

Summary: The best guitar how-to video available
Review: Rock Discipline is easily the best of the guitar videos available, and I've seen nearly all of them. Unlike many of the others out there who focus on teaching snippets of known songs, Petrucci shows you exercise upon exercise on how to improve your chops. Everything pertaining to rock guitar is included. From chord building, to melody to fast, screaming soloing, it's all here. The best feature of this video is that Petrucci teaches you how to practice. The VHS copy is two-hours long, and it is PACKED with information. You cannot go wrong with this one.
I'm hoping that John Petrucci, who has won countless fan-favorite awards, will come out with a second installment soon.

Review: The Best Guitar instructional video to date, Rock Discipline gives a full range of techniques to teach the art of mastering rock! Not only is John Petrucci one of the founding members of Dream Theater, but also a guitar genius, when his video first hit the shelves it was a very vital part of a guitarist's practice session, and now that it's on dvd, It will make the guitar practice session as easy as watching tv, Hey what am I saying it is watching tv!

Summary: Great Media for Advanced/Serious Players
Review: This instructional media is an awesome one. Starting with physical excercises that would make you comfortable while playing for hours, and it even touches on several church modes. Even if you're just looking for playing backing, vamps, rhythms, and etc, this media will teach you about chord formations and theories which will add your piece of art more colors. However, I wouldn't recommend it for NOT serious players, because one would need ample amount of time/effort to accomplish Petrucci's lessons. Otherwise, a fabulous one every guitarists must have.

Review: This is amazing. Truth be told, this is the first entirely positive review I've posted on Amazon.com. I have many guitar videos and this one is perhaps the most applicable technical primer I've seen. Some other great ones are Eric Johnson's 3 videos, Scott Henderson's titles, the Joe Pass, Marty Friedman, and Pat Martino titles etc.. The thing I like so much about this DVD is that the lessons provide a spring-board for improvement. Most of the techniques, such as metronome practice, were already familiar to me. However, with Petrucci's demonstration, one is given an incredible insight into the right and left hand posture required to play at such incredible speeds. Speed playing isn't everyone's goal but I'm guessing it's yours if your reading reviews about a player like this. This video will offer a positive approach to technical improvement. One note, this video does assume prior knowledge of scales, rhythm, and minor theory. You will be able to gain much by simply copying the tab examples, but believe me; the significance of the lessons is immensely deaper than the examples provided. Knowledge of the theory (which can and should be gained elsewhere) will immensely improve the transmission of Petrucci's concepts. Last of note is that it is truly inspiring to know that at least 1 guitar master still practices, even after having achieved success. It seems like all the others establish a career and then their playing goes to sh-t. Petrucci is one player upon whom the ferocity of aspiration has not been lost-despite the fact that he has already achieved greatness. He also seems like a nice guy, too.

Review: This is fantastic, with john petrucci being the best guitarist in the world, who could be a better teacher? he goes through everything thouroughly, and goes through a huge range, from speed improvement to technique and posture and much much more. this is a must buy especially for dream theater or liquid tension experiment fans who play the guitar, but also for anyone who plays the guitar at all, and wants to get better and has determination. 5 star
