Summary: Perfect for Beginners
Review: As a beginner salsa dancer, I found that this instructional DVD was as close to perfect as one could expect. The steps are elegant and the breakdowns provided by the instructors are easy to follow. I'm moving on to Volume 2!!!

Summary: I never thought I could salsa
Review: I assumed that any instructional video would be too complicated and discouraging for me, but this DVD sure changed that. Everything was very easy to follow and the quality was very nice as well. I thought salsa would just be difficult for me to pick up but this DVD had me doing the basics in no time. I'm very glad that I bought it.

Summary: No Drills = No Practice
Review: I bought this DVD because of its raving reviews that said it was so easy to learn salsa from these instructors. After receiving the DVD, watching it, and attempting to follow the instructions, here's what I have to say.

First of all, my gripes about this DVD: 1. This is a video thrown onto DVD format; it was not made originally for DVD, which is really annoying, especially considering the layout of the video which shows 15 dance combinations. Instead of being able to go directly to the combo that you want to practice, you have to reverse or forward your DVD. 2. The instructors don't provide any practice or drill time. They demonstrate the combo together one time, then explain the women's part one time and the men's part one time, then they finish by doing the combination to music one time. Emphasis on the ONE TIME. All 15 combos are practiced like this. Therefore, even though the the combos get increasingly difficult, the instructors do not take this into account and continue the one demo, one breakdown per male/female part, and once to music format before moving onto the next combo. This is way too fast and is also discouraging for a beginner. It is also annoying that one has to constantly reverse or forward to replay the move one wants to practice since it's only ever shown one time. 3. The DVD isn't fun to watch because it doesn't make you feel a part of it. It's just a series of taught moves; there's not even an explanation of how you might combine them. 4. From watching the DVD, I found out that the instructors' studio is in L.A., CA, and when I came back to re-read the reviews, I found it ironic that most of the reviews are from the CA area. It makes me wonder if the reviews are insider reviews from people who know or take classes from the instructors, rather than customers just picking up the DVD.

Okay, good points: 1. The moves are broken down, so that if you do spend all day reversing and forwarding, you can eventually get the move down, I'm sure. 2. Both male and female parts are explained.

Overall, if you want a beginner salsa DVD, I recommend going with something else, although I couldn't recommend one. If you do get this one, know that you'll want a fun one to supplement it and one that spends some amount of time going over the same moves.

Summary: Menu on this DVD helps make it easy to learn steps
Review: I have reviewed this salsa video along with many other dance videos and I have to correct the viewer who says you cannot skip through the different scenes as you can with DVDs normally. She is WRONG. This product is made for DVD... it has chapters and I could easily skip around through the 15 different dance combinations. I imagine there was a problem with her machine or she does not know how to use the MENU to navigate through the chapters. Most dance videos by independent instructors (those i've reviewed)are NOT made for DVD (DVDs require 'authoring' in order to create menus & chapters to navigate through). Some people copy them onto DVD because this is less expensive then being made for DVD. But the "Learn To Salsa" series with Tenia and Raul seems to be highly produced- with professional sound, DVD Authoring, and much more professional production, in general, then I'm accustomed to seeing in this genre. I hope this review helps.

Summary: The BEST DVD for Beginers
Review: Out of all the other that i have this is the BEST one. They break it down step by step... even I can learn it if you make it this easy. The best way to learn and polish up your techniques. Not only does this DVD teach the basic steps but gets you ready for the clubs, watch and learn and practice, practice, practice.
Tenia is a babe !!

Summary: Clear and concise
Review: This DVD has been just what I was looking for. Not a substitue for classes, but a great companion.

Tenia and Raul have chosen a realistic set of moves: they are uncluttered enough to master correctly from the DVD, but also relate well to moves dancers actually use 'in the wild'. With just these moves you could definitely have a good night at a club.

The teaching style is concise, covering all the factual information you need (for both the leader and follower) with the minimum amount of fuss. Precisely because it's a DVD, you don't need them to say the same thing in several different ways as a teacher would in class, because you can just watch it again.

I've been dancing on and off for a while so buying the DVD was aimed more at giving my boyfriend confidence before he braves local clubs and classes. Since I've never learned to lead, and have a poor memory for the routines taught in class, I wasn't in a good position to give him help beyond saying "no, that doesn't feel quite right". Now we have a neutral authority to turn to, which saves arguments!

They have chosen not to offer explicit style tips, leaving you to pick things up by example, but that's fair enough for an introductory DVD. Similarly, there's nothing about club etiquette or advice on accommodating different partners, but there are plenty of websites that can offer that. Still, I think it would be useful to have a little more on how to make leads unambiguous.

It would also be fun to have a little more footage of them (or others) dancing to music, to show how the moves look when strung together, as well as for general inspiration. But that would be icing on the cake.
