Description:
The pair of documentaries on this DVD, each an installment of the Secrets of War series, focus on two aspects of World War II in France: the "Sitzkrieg," or phony war, conducted by the Nazi forces that led up to the 1940 invasion of France, and the important role that was eventually played by the French resistance. The documentary on the "Sitzkrieg" examines some of the intrigue that has long been a puzzle to observers, and through interviews with historians and participants explains how France's preparations for what seemed like an inevitable invasion only seemed to lead to its defeat. This material is presented insightfully, and even includes a few mentions of philosopher Jean Paul Sartre, who, as a French soldier, staved off boredom at his outpost by writing one of his earliest philosophical books. The documentary on the French resistance describes the difficulties faced in organizing an armed force to fight the Nazi occupiers and contains some dramatic interviews with veterans of the long and brutal struggle against such notorious villains as Klaus Barbie. Both documentaries put their focus on the lesser-known aspects of the particular topics, and they stand as lively and insightful treatments of important historical events. --Robert J. McNamara
